I actually chalk most of this up to the fact that 1 account has 3 character slots. Extra characters to flame or troll, without having to make their main look like an ass.

I'll have you know I haven't posted a single reply for quite some time now so there is no way I've been breaking any rules!
Oh wait, you mean moderation of players? In that case carry on.
But seriously, I think it's better that moderation errs on the side of less than more when it comes to players. You are capable of ignoring people you think you should ignore while you will never be able to make judgment like that on removed content. Besides, I think the forums have improved over the past year if anything, at least there are way fewer RMT trolls that catch my eyes. But it's all just a personal opinion. Much like the notion of when you're crossing the lines of those rules is also a personal opinion, so I stick with erring on less than more.

I like the forums the way they are. I even get disappointed sometimes when I see a thread has been locked where I would have wanted to reply. The fact that people who post stupid things get instant and honest feedback letting them know how stupid they are, is one of the best qualities of the Eve forums to me.

So we'll just ignore the concensus that there is generally very poor community behaviour, and be done with it. What an appalling attitude to take. I guess that explains the almost relentless trolling/flaming in eve both on and off the servers. CCP don't care at all the type of community they foster.
I shall be cancelling an account which will close on the 23rd. Looks like the only way to seek positive change is to take my subscription money elsewhere. Its the only standard that gets listened to.
Anyone asking for my stuff is just another case in point.

Yep, you hit the nail on the head. The community is incapable of taking responsibility for itself, like a room full of five years olds. Thank you for illustrating my point perfectly.

the real problem is the success of warcraft.
its success has initiated a generation of peoplke into the easy carebear methodology of " its too hard" "im casual" ect.
now that they have destroyed that game, they leave and move on, and unfortunatly eve is next.

Please note the report a post function above every post enables the community to effectively self-police itself by highlighting ones that you deem to break the rules.
CAOD has a bad reputation but a quick glance over the last five pages or so will see how heavily it is moderated. This goes for the forums as a whole, one of our daily tasks is to go through each channel both to moderate them and to highlight worthy threads for the rest of the development team.
So whilst we may miss a *bad* post from time to time, the Community Team as a whole gets through most channels, every day.

Be careful not to confuse this for concern about the game. The game is great. Only ruined by the community spirit that infests it. Eve is no longer a place people want to be other than to be offensive to one another. The forums are a direct reflection of that.
Community spirit is found only in the small groups of like minded players you get to know online. Otherwise the venemous attitude of a great many forum posters, makes Eve a very unpleasant experience for any gamer, casual or otherwise.
To suggest that CCP are successfully enforcing their own forums rules is clearly countered by the huge number of vitriolic posts on the forums today alone...and even in this thread.
Bring back a better community spirit and add value to the gaming experience, attract more players, and make them want to stay. Don't let the lowest of the low drag this decent game to graveyard of MMOs.

I think thats the main problem there tbh, the fact it's made of nothing but locked spam threads with no content or downright offensive comments says it all really, instead of trying to cure the problem with serious consequences for the offenders your sticking a band aid on it and hoping it go's away. From my opinion as a player here from the start the forums of 3-4 years back were a joy to read, something new and constructive everyday, you only have to look back and see the lack of locked and modded posts to see that the eve playerbase has degenerated into a group of childish playground hoodlums who do nothing but try to outdo each other for the title of most idiotic post with the most replies.
After playing wow/lotro ect and seeing there forums and using them, it allways amaze's me eve players have the arrogance to try say they are the more mature playerbase.

This is a game in which everybody is a target, scamming people and suckerpunching defenseless players is not only allowed but encouraged, and in the true spirit of "no good deed goes unpunished" you help others at your own peril. The only way to "win" this game according to popular wisdom is to destroy your opponent's will to play it and very few holds are barred.
How the hell is a game like that going to have a friendly, helpful and courteous forum community? CCP could hire some fascist mods but then they wouldn't have a nicey- nice forum, they'd have an empty one.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining and in fact I quite enjoy it, but nonetheless there you have it. ___________________________________________

The point I was attempting to make was that there is active and ongoing moderation of the forums. Elsewhere in this thread there are complaints of a lack of moderation, when we point to examples of moderation it's either not enough or too heavy-handed.
I'm sure residents of Crime & Punishment will be happy to add their voice on why they think that channel has become a mini-CAOD and how heavy-handed the moderation is there.
Moderation is serious (and subjective) business. It will always be not enough or too much for any individual, my point is that there are dedicated individuals doing it on a daily basis.
Special Agent Mitnal never lets the side down
The other point to be made was that the perception of CAOD is that it's an unregulated mess. On the contrary you could argue that it's over-moderated and that our presence there is too much as shown by the amount of locked threads.
I must be strange to enjoy the moderation process and get to read forums as part of a job and I hugely enjoy interacting in threads. At the heart of the process is making the experience that much more enjoyable, whether it be for a veteran player, new player, missioner, industrialist or POS warrior.
We can all help improve the quality of the community with the quality of our posts. One only needs to look in New Citizens to see that the advice on offer there from veterans, devs, GMs and new players alike is highly appreciated.
The forums may be better or worse than in the past but ultimately its improvement is in the hands of the people that post on them.

Actually, I'd say that COAD is one forum that really does need stronger moderation. As it stands it's basically worthless. Its only redeeming feature is that it (mostly) confines the inter-alliance smack to a single forum.
If I were to make a recommendation for COAD it would be that each corp could only nominate a single person to post on it, and that there would be a 10-member minimum corp size to make a nomination.
That would reform COAD well enough, I suppose. But then I guess all the people who are just certain that we need to see their oh-so clever alt posts would excrete them in General.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |
