You know, when you think of it, a mining laser must have to be a real complicated piece of equipment. A Combat laser only has to damage it's target, but a mining laser has to carefully chop out the ore from a roid, then transport it back to the ship, using I suspect, some sort of low power tractor beam that surrounds the cutting beam. So it must generate a hell of a lot of heat, and be quite a complicated set-up. I think that perhaps to lengthen the safe life of a mining laser there should be a cut-off that kicks in after say 15 minutes of constant use. It doesn't have to be for long, but enough to bring the pilots attention back to this delicate equipment as they restart it.

My point to this preamble?

To stop all the AFK mining done by Indy users. If this was something being done by pirates people would be screaming "Exploit!". While it may not be an exploit with in the game I feel it is very much against the 'spirit of the game' which has been set up so that you can do lots of things off-line, but you have to be in game on-line to do your basic money making tasks.
I'm seeing more and more abandoned Indies parked at asteroid fields in high security systems just left 'chewing away' for hours at a time. Seeing as these systems are also the ones that new players will tend to make for, and in many cases now actual starts systems it's bad enough having all these Indies stripping the asteroids, but if the pilots are going to do it, they should at least have the curtisy to be in-game.

I disagree, entirely.

Mining, especially low quality ore must be done to keep this game going and nobody who has been in the game for more than about 10 days "wants" to pay attention to watching a yellow beam hit a rock for hours on end.

And your argument that a mining laser is complex is maybe the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Just state that you want the economy to collapse even more than it is already and be done with it.

And why would it collapse?

Why should Indie pilots be able to make the basis for their money making away from their computers when everybody else has to be active and alert within the game?

As for the collapse of the ecconomy argument. Sorry that's just bunkum. The majority of people who mine do so in frigates, or some cruisers now, either alone or in groups.

AFK miners are a small group, but a group who are making money out of doing nothing. As I said in the original comment, if it was a pirate corp doing this people would be screaming blue murder. But because this is something done by the "Good guys" is it any less a "Questionable tactic"?

Oh and yes. If I've offended anybody with my little preamble into the compexity of the mining laser, then I appologise for trying to add a little 'colour' to my thoughts rather then spew out none justified demands.

Two things:
1) mining sux, its the most boring thing ever
2) mining is vital, without it noone can build stuff.

Let people afk mine. Its not like its a very efficient way of doing it - indys can only mount one miner.

... and filling my industrial takes roughly 2 and a half hours.
could take more, if I had alpha-expanders.

my time to waste, getting less money than someone with 3 mining lasers and 500m3 cargo.
(takes three times longer... someone with three miners would get the same amount I have in fifty minutes or so.. but they'd have to go back and forth to the station a few more times).

Hmm whats so bad with indie AFK-mining?

Its not a problem really cause:

* It takes a looooooooooooooooong time to fill up an indie with just one puny laser , within that time a team of people can do a LOT more.
* It is risky , cause anyone and his mother can shoot you down when afk ..
* Better roids dont fill up the cargo , IE you cant lock on to a Plag or Omber or better minerals and fill your hold with it , only lower grade minerals (Veld,Scord,Pyrox)is viable to mine.

I dont see this as a problem cause the risk is weighed against the reward as everything else in this game.

(Massive amounts of sarcasm below:)

I suggest we make this voluntary. For those that feel like Sam does about taking better care of our mining beams, they can stop and restart their mining beams manually every fifteen minutes.

(End Sarcasm)

Sam,

When you need to mine to get 710,000 units of tritanium to make your new Thorax cruiser, let us know how you like restarting your miner beams every 15 minutes. Keep in mind, this doesn't even include other minerals required to build your Thorax.

It is my understanding that there are 5,000 systems in this game, and only 1,000 systems are being used. If you feel cheated by AFK miners, I would suggest that you make it 1,001 systems being used.

This is a game. Games are meant to be fun and challenging. There is usually nothing fun or challenging about mining, but every once and a while, something does happen.

Mining is a neccessity to succeed in this game, and truthfully our corporation has some AFK mining going on, but I couldn't do it. One industrial ship full of ore is just a handful of what we need to meet the orders from our customers. I can often be seen in my Vexor cruiser with four mining beams blasting away, while 4 Harvester mining drones are helping me out. In about 2.5 hours, I have enough ore to fill 5 Iteron Mk3 industrial ships.

And then we have @$$es like Rikus that cozy up in thier Mk3 and steal 3000+ metric tons of my hard work. I'd rather put up with AFK miners, and blow up people like Rikus.

If you are gonna complain about people with indi's afk mining, why not mention Corp mining groups? I can tell you from being instramental in a group that can take 100K of kernite in 5 hours AFK mining is no where near an eficient way of mining. you may dislike AFK mineing and or Corp Mining but this as has been said the engine that keeps EVE ticking over.

Mining is tedious to the max but our corp could not have aforded to buy 6 cruisers in the last two weeks with out dedicated 10 hour stints of mining.

I would have to disagree with the idea of putting any restrictions on the mining done by an industrial.

On the first hand, there are very limited areas where such an operation could occur due to the roaming pirates. This would mean they are mining ore which has very little value and to a new comer it might seem they have a great advantage, but when you compare their efforts against someone who can mine nearly 15 times as fast into a container and pick it up, it seems relatively inconsequential.

Secondly, from all of the things I would expect to see in a mining field a lowly armored, slow, ship with no little to no offensive capabilities would be one of them. Instead, most of the times, I see ôthe latest combat ships commissioned by the Federationö in a field mining ore.

If there was anything to be said about out of balance or unrealistic mining, I think it should apply to the use of the most advanced warfare machines to perform mundane and industrial work. Can you imagine putting stealth bombers in action as crop dusters? Or perhaps use battleships as fishing vessels? Those statements may sound absurd, however it is a common occurrence in the universe of EVE.

Ah but your average crop duster doesn't have to worry about being jumped by Rats. EVE miners do, so if you use you cruiser to create a hybrid ship that can mine as well as offer sturdy defence of it'self AND surrounding team matets you can reduce the number of ships you need to efectively mine. ( Ie your corp gaurd can be doing some thind productive whilst waiting for the Rats to turn up. That and the fact the more lasers you can get into a roid field the better )

I believe the use of Cruisers as a Gun / Mining plat form Is a verry valid way to equip your corp..

Mining in an Industrial is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You would not have to sit there for 2 hours if you used the appropriate equipment to get the same amount of ore. What a maroon!

Oh boy, an Indy with a mining laser Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy

It takes just 3 minutes to get around 3500 m3 of ore with a Covetor. In 6 minutes, I can more than fill a unexpanded Iteron V.

If you don't have the skills for a barge yet, a cruiser with a large cargo hold and full rack of expanders. Mount as many lasers as possible and watch your wallet get fat real quick.

Indy mining FTW Laughing
