Edited by: Amastat on 28/07/2008 16:54:19 The Star Trek: Online website had been down for a long time, due to a switch in license from Perpetual Entertainment to Cryptic Studios - the website is now open, and a so-called video release of the in-game footage of Star Trek: Online will be released on August 10th.
The website also has a set of new screen shots as well - I have to say the graphics are indeed impressive, this is interesting - hopefully can catch BETA
There is also a preview video already released of the Dev's talking about the game. ____________________

That's what I'm expecting too, unfortunately. There's a chance to make this game unique in the MMO market (EVE notwithstanding) but I fear Cryptic will botch it.

The one developed by Perpetual WAS going to be a WoW in space, the first screenshots released were impressive, but then they went with the cartoony look.
At least they're not doing that here!

Edited by: Amastat on 28/07/2008 22:44:08 Really no not enough ground to make a call this early, but I am 80% sure that this will be a WoW in space. My intuition screams this. ____________________

All MMOs these days seem to base their gameplay off of WoW's success. EVE only seems an exception since it was made before WoW thus wasn't tainted with it's influence ...

I'd like to be proved wrong, but the last place I'd look for a good game is in a popular franchise; mass-market appeal means mandatory appealing to the masses, which equals lowest common denominator suckage :(
Oh, and lots of Kirk69, Spock314159265, and Khaaaaannnnz19 :)

There's a poor choice of colors (looks like a cartoon) not to mention that some colors are very intense. I hope this is not the same shit we'll be served in the real game.

no pvp would make the game a bit shallow... but on the other hand, without pvp the devs don't have to spend so much time keeping the game's classes balanced (look at any of WoW's forums and patchnotes. class balance is their #1 priority)... I like the idea that there'll be both space flight (and ship customization) and extensive ground exploration. I'll definitely sign up for the beta, and probably buy it too.. if only for the 30 free days ;)

Non-turret based weapons systems == fail on a galactic scale.

They actually do have a sort of turret system, as you see in this video. and yet, their aiming still sucks.

Well, Ryzom dared to be different, and look at what happened to it... (on the other hand Guild Wars is being successful while doing their own thing, but then it's not really an MMOG in the traditional sense).
But that's the downside of our market-driven system: MMOGs take an enormous amount of resources and financial investment just to be developed, and investors are going to look at the recipes that have proved to be successful - ie: WoW - and poke the development team about how close is their game sticking to that tried-and-true formula.
It is the money people after all the ones that are risking the most - the developers will get paid their salary at the end of the day, and their worst case scenario is just having to look for a new job.
EvE was also unique in that given its nature it took a whole lot less resources to being developed - you know how time consuming it is to design a HL2 level, imagine that but on the scale of a whole world - and even then it still was released too early as they run out of money.
So until someone figures out a way to produce an MMOG on the cheap that gives them more freedom from the money people to experiment with new formulas (or some investor with very deep pockets willing to take the risk), expect WoW clone after WoW clone with not much variation - Star Trek Online included.

Well I am a huge trek fan.. Seen them all.. And honestly, if it wasn't for that.. I might not be playing EVE to this day.. But this single quote scares me "Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek« Online will be developed for both console and PC formats." I feel they will "dumb" the gameplay down for the childsh console controllers... MMO's on console= EPIC FAIL!!! I do hope the game turns out to be a winner, I will give it a shot... Unless it has no PvP..

From what I could gather on the STO forums yesterday, they are going to have PVP, but not sure if it's going to be non-consensual. Also, they haven't said if they are going to have PVP and non-PVP servers, or a "singular" server setup like EVE.
I will give it a go, for 14/30 days. If it's WoW in space, I will stick with EVE.
It all depends how true to the franchise STO is, but ST has always been carebearish, so it would be a bit different than EVE. Let's wait and see when/if it goes live.

Space MMO's - make 20 station types, 20 ship types, 20 planet types, 10 different star types, and 20 different asteroids and you've got your environment. Now just make a combat and trading/market system and bam you've got a space game.
Infinitely easier on the graphical level...but if you want to have real physics, have fun with that.
