Thanks for the info..this is great!

However I disagree with you on one point..the looks. I think the probe is one of the coolest looking ships around...and I hate msot of the ships in the game...especially Minmitar and Caldari.

If you are looking at gall. cruisers, look no further than the Vexor.

High's 4x dual 150 mm rails (easy to find proto's)
med 2x 10mn mwd 1x medium cap battery (II)
Low's:
Combat: 1xmed armor rep, 2xcap relay 1xrcu
Haulin' 4xexpanders
plus a mix of heavy, medium and light drones

I have killed an Inferno with the combat setup, by simply outrunning his cruise missiles by flying in a big triangle with him in the middle.

And I have yet to see a non shuttle, non r&d courier job that it couldn't fit in one go, as it has 950+ cargo with 4 expanders.

hit's the gate at 3km+ when you fire the dual mwd's, and it has enough cap because of the battery, to do it over and over and over without running dry.

I use a probe with a 1mn mwd a tech 2 small cap battery and two power diags

but I get up to 1900m/s by the time I slam into the gates...

maybe more navigation skills... donno.

I used the Probe for running missions for the longest time. Then I started getting lvl 3 missions that it just couldnĘt live up to. Switched to an Omen, good fighting ship for missions. I then switched to a thorax for the drone capacity because I like to warp right into the middle of the rats on a kill mission, release the ogres and clean the ratĘs clock right quick. One thing though is that I like using the Omen a lot more for most lvl 3 missions because it has a much quicker pickup on the speed side than the Thorax. I can hit the gate at top speed using just one burst on the mwd with the Omen whereas on the Thorax I begin loosing speed a before I get to the gate. Due to the Omen getting up to speed faster, thus being able to hold top speed longer, it seems to me at least that I complete missions a bit quicker with it.

The Probe: an excellent ship.

I consider the Probe an Imicus-equivalent, and naturally used Imicii first being enrolled in the Federal Navy Academy. But the Imicus' advantages over the Probe are all, oddly, combat related. Since the ship wasn't designed for that purpose, it seems the Gallente simply dropped the ball here.

Using both ships did highlight one feature: Minmatar warp drives are less efficient than Gallente models. However, extra investment in Warp Drive Operation or Energy Systems Management easily compensates for this single flaw.

I've been playing a year, and never been big on combat. I lost my probe in EC8-P8R trying to steal the contents of the loot can from under the Ascriber's nose (poor little probe, just wasn't QUITE quick enough). I almost cried when I lost it, as:

1. I genuinely love the probe
2. I'd had it a good few months
3. It had two 24% cargo expanders on it at the time!

This was back when even the lowly pirates dropped decent kit - I think I got the two expanders off two Arrogators!

Also, although the Probe is still a great ship, it used to be even better - I'm pretty sure it's base speed was nerfed about 6 months back, as my Probe is slower NOW at level 5 Minmatar Frigate than it was THEN when I only had level 3!

Long live the probe! I'm actually training Tempest just because it reminds me of the probe in appearance...

...well, that and for the big guns of courseVery Happy.

The Probe was my hauling ship of choice until I discovered I could go a lot faster in a thorax

My thorax has three overdrive injectors, two reactor controls and two 100MN AB's. I jump before I get anywhere near the top speed (something like 3,300 m/s). I prefer ABs to the MWD for a couple of reasons.

If you take a 100MN AB and a 10MN MWD you can fill your lows with cargo expanders and maybe get close to the probe's cargo capacity, tho it still won't be nearly as agile. I still prefer the Probe with a single MWD tho as you save tons of time while aligning.

Probe > thorax for most hauling missions... The fact remains that a thorax only warps at 3 au/s.

But for a probe you want engineering5 so you can fit a 1mn mwd and a small battery and depending on the missions haul size you can fit either 2 nanos or 2 expanders.

I'm trying to make a Probe setup so it can handle level 2 kill missions. Any suggestions?

I'd probably go for

2x 280mm
1x 1MN afterburner
1x Small Shield booster
2x Micro Aux

1x Hobgoblin
1x Hamerhead

That setup gives you at least 400m/s and it should be enough to keep the pirates at a distance. If you need even more speed you could trade in the afterburner and shield booster for a micro warp drive.

Myyona, 280mm's are Howitzers, not auto-cannons (at least I don't think they are on in the same).

We're getting about 19,000 meter range with a 280 at the moment on a Tristan.

Ups, silly me Embarassed
I've managed to beat Shogon in my Probe by now.
3 light drones (although they don't seem to doing any damage) and a couple of 200 mm autocannons.
One shield booster is enough to handle the damage, then I get in at 850 m range and in a couple of minutes he's gone. Not very good
