I feel I have exhausted my research into Crane set-ups, mostly it goes like - get a Bustard, until you ask about the Bustard and it goes like get a Crane!... So I buy the Crane, but the set-ups still dont hang right? 1) With a shield boost bonus of 10% per level for Transport ships why doesn't anyone fit a boost amp? 2) Anyone got a serious Crane fit, or tell me where the serious ship fittings secrets are kept
Thank you, enjoy your weekend!

Edited by: James Lyrus on 01/08/2008 06:41:24 Active tanking on a hauler is just plain crap. All the transport ships have this problem. Doubly so the Crane, which runs out of grid after teh MWD alone.
But anyway, here's an awesome Crane fit: [Crane, Pimped MF] Local Hull Conversion Inertial Stabilizers I Local Hull Conversion Inertial Stabilizers I
10MN Digital Booster Rockets ECM Burst II Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II
Improved Cloaking Device II
Polycarbon Engine Housing I Polycarbon Engine Housing I
If you're not feeling rich, you may need to compromise on the fitting options. In particular, any other MWD will require grid mods to fit. -- Crane needs more grid 249km locking? |

Power grid is a problem with the Crane, yes.
Currently I doubt anyone would want to try to active tank with a Blockade Runner class Transport Ship.
For a somewhat more compromised-wallet fitting,
You'll want to have Engineering trained to level V for it and sacrifice a low slot for something like a Reactor Control Unit or perhaps sc**** by with a Power Diagnostic System. Alternatively, use an energy grid rig (Ancillary Current Router I) instead, if you like.
Generally, I would put an Improved Cloaking Device II in the high. Then put an RCU/PDS II in a low, with a Nanofiber Structure II/Inertia Stabilizer II next to it. Depending what you put in your first low slot (an RCU or a PDS or two) you should be able to cram in something like a ECM - Multispectral Jammer II, Cap Recharger II, or whatever into your middle slots along with another two modules to keep it and your Micro Warp Drive company.
Don't forget to examine rigs for your two upgrade slots if/when you can afford to do so.
I'm not sure what ultimate impact the proposed changes to Micro Warp Drives will have on the viability of this fitting.

with the way the "anti-nano patch" looks to be going it might be better to get the agility rigs rather than polys.
and just toss a pds into one of the lowslots

Back in the days of warp to 15Km, the DST tanking bonuses were relevant because of gate rats.
Now we have warp to 0Km no-one trains transports past level 1.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Both my Viator and Crane have agility rigs, shield buffer in mids and cloak.
Blockade runner active tank bonus are a complete waste of time, some sort of buffer bonus or extra speed/agility bonus might be more useful.

Personally i use my crane as a badger mk III, fastest afk empire hauler there is if rigged for it, mwd and booster just wont fit unless you look at officer grade implants If you want to mwd and tank a blockade im afraid you need a prorator which incidentally, thanks to those lows, is also the most agile if you fit and rig it. Truthfully, tanking a hauler is usually not a good idea.
However with this nano/game ballace patch the ab indy may not be so bad seeing as pasing 1k with ab currently and it retains the ships small sig, once ccp tweak them and reduce web fitting a tanked crane may be viable - even if it would only survive noob camps.
Best advice is just train amarr indy v, it's quicker than maxing the skills to fit the grid gimped crane, and gives you access to the most flexible/best blockade able to be the quickest afk hauler, most agile, most tankable or have the most space depending on fitting. Just remember to use a giant secure can. -------------------------

If you have reached the point where you need a tank on a Blockade Runner, you have done something wrong...
I use cloak, MWD, Invul II, EM resistance amp (or whatever), nano's / I-stabs on my Prowler.
Low Friction Nozzle Joint and an Auxiliary Thruster rig split the difference between the 2 choices when you might need a tank: get into warp (towards something) fast or get back to the gate fast.
I support that the shield boost bonus should be changed to something useful.

Actually, the nano-tanked crane isn't that hard. The storyline MWD (digital booster rockets), and a Caldari Navy booster fits with an em t2 + invul t2.

Crane setups goes like this:
For 0.0 use: Speed and resist! You need to get out of bubbles or back to the gate. Therefore no ecm or anything that give you aggro and prevent you from jumping. Mwd and resist in mids, Nano in lows. Cloak in high.
For lowsec: You just gotta align and get out. Agility rigs. Resist in mids. Istabs in lows. Cloak in high.
Middle of the road for lowsec/0.0: Mwd + resist in mid. Nano in low (not as much agility increase as istabs but helps mwd). Cloak in high. 1 agility rig + 1 ancillary current router (provides enough PG for mwd with the best named t1).

Oh yeah I guess I forgot one thing:
As a general runabout in hisec: Fit whatever you want. It's hisec ffs. Having said that, overdrives in lows will help if you do much afk travel. Resist or sheild extender makes you harder to suicide. If you use it manually you probably want some agility to align faster. Doesn't really matter in hisec, but it is a great runabout/courier missionsrunner.

Since I'm on a roll I'll settle the Crane/Bustard controversy for you as well:
Anyone who tells you "get a bustard" when you ask about crane setups or "get a crane" when you ask about bustard setups does not have the faintest clue what they are talking about. Here are the merits of each ship:
Crane: capable of running through 0.0 bubblecamps and goes through lowsec camps like they werent even there. Secondary use as a fast runabout in hisec.
Bustard: Has the biggest cargohold of all cal haulers and good resists. Therefore it should always be fitted with cargo rigs and expanders. If you get caught in a 0.0 camp you die. If you get caught in a lowsec camp you die unless you stabbed up. But if you have the lows full of wstabs you might as well use a badger 2. This is a big hauler, nothing else. Aligns like an oiltanker. The resists makes it a good mining-op hauler for 0.0. In hisec it's got its big cargo. In lowsec it's got no business at all.
It's not an either/or thing. These ships have completely different jobs to do.

I use low friction nozzle joint rigs; inexpensive and very nice on a transport
