As far as I can see, this skill actually works AGAINST you. By increasing the drone's optimal range = their orbit radius, you are DECREASING the target's required tracking speed to hit your drones.
Or am I misunderstanding the whole concept?

well yes in that sense, but your drones alose have increased tracking from being further out and also they start shooting that split second earlier and it also means as they orbit because there distance changes alot espially if someone is moving fast they will be more likely to be in shooting range.
This is alos maybe more for sentry drones.
the downside you mentioned I doubt really makes any real world differnce.

From what I understand the orbit radius of drones is fixed.
From what I've experienced training Drone Sharpshooting helps drone DPS quite a bit on fast-moving targets they have trouble keeping up with (the drones will pulse their MWD and tend to stay outside their optimals), and on the initial volleys of light drones that have a lot of speed mods (nav computer, Drone Navigation) since they tend to overshoot the target when coming into range. ---

I thought this skill only effected sentry drones. I'm probably wrong but thats what I allways thought. |

The orbit distance is fixed, so technically it may actually reduce the drones dps as its optimal is bigger than its orbit.
But overall i think its worth getting, i have it at 4, its help with very slow heavy drones like ogres, who take ages to get into there optimal. Also you need it at 4 to get sentry drones.
People seem to have different views on it, i doubt its worth training to 5 though, imo.

So if you have guns with same tracking and all parameters the same AND increased optimal u have reduced dps :)? Same goes to drones - it has same tracking still and when in same orbit it shoots same. Only when chasing fast targets where orbit is all over the place, higher optimal helps getting more shots on target.
Its like inty shooting other ships....

What? Why would having more optimal than needed reduce damage?

People think "optimal" means that you do the most damage at that range, and it slowly decreases as you go to 0m.
While this is true in a slightly confusing calculus way, since optimal tends to go with tracking (more optimal tends to mean less tracking, etc), and being at your optimal means less transversal issues (further out), increasing your optimal will never decrease DPS

Thats what I also said :), this skill is a good skill to have. Guns with 2x or 10x more optimal then needed and still same tracking will shoot the same. I hope there wont be many posts regarding this skill like there are with Tactical shield manip. skill.

Heard it before, had hoped that people would read the tracking guide by now....
Eh, hope springs (and dies) eternal.

Yes, but increasing optimal while not changing tracking speed or orbit range is never a bad thing. It doesn't mean you're going to start missing becuase your optimal is higher than your current range.

Edited by: Dinsdale Pirannha on 02/08/2008 14:43:40 So bottom line, drone sharpshooting improvements are a good thing because of the improved tracking and improved range against moving targets?
The only exception would be when your drones are orbiting a stationary target like a sentry tower?

I think he means that the target can shoot better on his drones and kill them more easily cause they orbit further out.

Regarding few last statements..
No, drones are not further out.. they have same orbit distance that is hard coded. Also drone sharpshooting doesn't improve tracking.
