HAMS fire considerably faster and have more DPS than Heavies (though less alpha), don't know where you got your idea from. If you were correct, there would be nor eason to fit hams if you could fit heavies.

Most ships will fit according to their bonuses.
The Sacrilege will still fit HAML, the Drake will generally fit heavies, HAML sometimes for pvp, the Cerberus with its tight grid will still fit heavies, and there you have it.

HAM + Javalin = All the range you need with comparable DPS to normal heavies.

I'll have to see once the nerfs roll through. My cerberus is almost always armed with AML's because it's the best weapon available to engage the sorts of ships I generally encounter. I consider the AML my "standard weapon" with the HML and HAM being reserved for special purposes.
If, after the nerf the Heavy performs in it's supposed role of killing cruisers I'll consider slapping them on as a rule rather than as an exception.

I'm sorry, I was unclear.
I only meant that neither missile has an advantage when it comes to fighting nanos (same explosion velocity).
While heavies do have a smaller explosion radius due to a skill that doesn't affect hams, any target out speeding the missiles explosion velocity is probably mwding, negating the heavy missiles advantage.
