I seem to remember a thread from a while back about getting a free blueprint or something once you hit either a certain corp standing or a certain faction standing. Is this true? if so, where/what?

You get certain blueprints from cosmos agents when you complete missions with them. Look into Cosmos for your area to see if thats what your looking for.

There are 3 agents hovering around a gate in Amarr Cosmos that will give u Navy Ship blueprints in exchange for tags, you need a high faction standing to talk to them.
I have over 8 Amarr and have only just managed to get a 2 run Navy Slicer BP (30 Silver Sansha Tags), next will be a Navy Omen then A Navy Apoc, but tbh the Apoc agent requires a true standing of 9.9 which is gonna take a while.
Presumably the other Cosmos areas are the same

There are similar agents for caldari, based if i remember correctly in otitoh. If you google cosmos mission there are a few sites which you might be able to find, and one of these lists exactly what faction standing you need and which tags you have to supply to the agents for each ship type - hookbill, navy caracal and navy raven. 8.4, 9.6 and 9.9 if i remember correctly.
This link is in German unfortunately but it shows that the faction bpcs for caldari, but if you scroll down there isnt a german translation for guristas silver tags so you should be able to figure out who you need to talk to ;)

i know you do not need a 9.6 to get the cruiser sized bpc frmo an agent because i got mine when my standings were below 9.5...although my effective was at like 9.55 so i think its 9.4 for cruiser and i think its closer to 8.8 for frig sized ship ...i have no idea about the battleship though as im trying to figure it out myself
