My Danish VISA card has no fees involved with a transaction in Iceland, and the exchange rate is very decent. And in Iceland, there's no places that doesn't take credit card. Even the pizza delivery boy takes credit card. In fact, they very much prefer that you use card.
thats probably because they prefer to not weild a large sack with an ISK sign on it after reciving all the shrapnel people want to get rid of, am i right? :-P

Just use an ATM. If your bank is any good at all*, you can use your cards anywhere.
Plus, y'know, everywhere takes plastic these days.

Seriously, though, the most dark age banking system in the first world I've seen is Japan circa 2006. I'm going back to Tokyo later this year, hopefully it's improved. |

kr, or +ìkr, is the currency symbol for the Icelandic Kr+¦na from my understanding.
According to Yahoo! finance, $1 = kr125.69

Yep. You can buy the cheapest thing ever and pay by card, and the cashier won't care.

Depending on what you're referring to, arguably it hasn't. I ventured through Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka at the end of last year and odds were about 50/50 for places taking credit cards. Additionally, for some weird reason it was harder to find ATM's that took Mastercards than it was for ATM's that took VISAs |

Mastercards have always been more problematic at being accepted than VISA. At some point in the past I had to dump my MC because 30% of online services did not accept it.
About costs: in some countries, credit cards are abused with surcharges and state taxes, shop owners see the money only up to 3 months past the electronic transaction, they have to spend a sum for their POS terminal and then pay for rental fee.
Plus the shops circumventing taxes and VAT / using black market hate electronic transactions.
Therefore your credit card coverage will greatly vary by nation.
Edit: also customers may demand to NOT pay with credit card.
We have an influx of rich Russians and zillions of new rich Chinese who refuse to pay with credit card, they prefer carrying bags of money for cash payment. Who knows how they gained that money.
