HI there.
I have no idea where to put this topic, but i am looking for a way to build a 3d model of a ship.. basically exporting a ship to another 3d prog.
if there a way to see/use the ingame skins/models of ships? -----

Edited by: Barth3zzzNL on 31/05/2004 10:41:31 Theres a program on eve-i.com that might help you unpack stuff from the game files.

There is a tool called "stuff extractor" on eve-i.com...you find pretty much any content in the .stuff files, and with this little program you can view & unstuff everything. However, even if its comparable easy to get the textures, you wonŠt get a hand on the ship models, i think their original mesh files are coded for the eve engine, so you canŠt export them. (well at least i couldnŠt do it )

Well....
after a little thought, the "mesh" i can easily do without - just some more work on my own (gotta do some of that book-learning stuff.. yech)
but if someone would care to help me out on the skins? at least to get some of those patters (i love the rust/shiny bits on many of the ships)

I'd love to see a nice raytracing of the ships in EVE, but if the model meshes themselves can't be extracted, we're stuffed. -- Security Director, Draconis Industries. |

Actually, the meshes CAN be extracted I believe.. someone long ago used to go through the .stuff files every patch and look for new items.. they would post rendered pictures of new ships that were in the .stuff but not in the game.. not sure how they did it, but it wasn't created by the EVE engine...
So, I don't know how, but it can be done.. at least there is hope for you.

The meshes are in the .tri files in the .stuff files. Take a look at them, get a couple of books (or internet sites) on mesh data structures, and one on mesh compression and you'll be well on your way...
I'll have a think about releasing a cut-down version of the TRI mesh viewer i made...
Cheers

Stuff extraction is nice, but what about putting stuff INTO the stuff archives, or chaning them? I've searched forever for a prog that does this, haven't found it though. Anyone know anything? |

If you wanna make 3D models you should aim for using 3D Studio Max or MAYA

Well its old but I know that even with the .stuff extractor there is some other very complicated stuff that stops you from getting the models so...

Oh didn't know that hehe... Sounds lieky though, that you're not allowed to modify their work.
Better stop fooling around here then.
