VETO CORP ANNOUNCEMENT
The gift of sight is something that trillions of us take for granted every day of our lives as we go about our business, living our lives.
This fact of life becomes more apparent and hits home harder when we hear the plight of two youngsters in Rens whom have unintentionally blinded themselves in a bid to take on the appearence of their idol, Maleatu Shakor. After returning to the center of the cluster after some time away in Venal and hearing of their plight, I must say the news brought with it a sharp sting of sadness, albeit not without a sense of irony.
The irony being that in a bid to honor Maleatu Shakor, a beacon of freedom in these new times for the Republic, these two youngsters have unintentionally removed some of their own freedom to live to the fullest, by accidentally destroying one of their most important senses.
It is my fond hope that both of these individuals will soon once again be able to watch their new Republic prosper with their own eyes, and watch their idol Maleatu Shakor address his people.
As such, this is a personal request from Veto Corp to the clan of these two Matari citizens to contact me either here, or in private, to arrange full transfer of the funds for corrective therapy for these two teens.
I await your contact with great hope.
Regards,
Ethan Xavier Verone Chief Executive & Executor Veto Corp

It's sad that some think that Shakor's greatness comes from his appearance rather than from his words, thoughts, and deeds despite his appearance. Luckily, as you say, technology exists to help these children recover from their tragic mistake, but I truly hope that -- more that any physical remedy -- someone takes the time to help them understand what it is that truly makes a man great.

I really don't think it was ever a competition Captain Stitcher. But I am glad to see others think it is worth enough to seek a way to raise or donate the funding for the two teens recovery. / "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we do." - Confucius, Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC.) |

I would be willing to donate a couple million ISK. I would also like to make a suggestion. It looks like we have more than enough donations to pay for their recovery. I suggest we take the extra funds and create some kind of a scholarship fund for these kids. They seem to be in need of some kind of meaningful guidance and education. Perhaps we can make sure we address the long-term issues as well as their short-term injuries.... ----------------------------------------------- All true old-school gamers know the only reliable way to stop a forum troll is with acid or fire... ----------------------------------------------- |

There can be hardly a more poignant act that symbolizes Matari stupidity and ignorance.
The Matari are not blind to the truth because they cannot see it, they are unable to see the truth because they make themselves blind.
This act, however tragic, is just the latest expression of Matari self-delusion.
The Matari are a lost people, in more ways than one. ____

I knew Brutors aren't all that smart, but jezz. Even being mentally unstable, how does industrial dye into your eyes seem remotely like a good idea? And if they were 'mentally imbalanced' shouldn't they have been under watch, even more so if they self-harm.
This news doesn't make me laugh, but it hardly makes me feel sorry for them as it was self-inflicted.

Teenagers. I'm sure none of us did anything incredibly unwise during our younger years. Regardless, I support Mr Verone's initiative, and if he would like to share the cost should he be contacted, I am personally more than willing to pitch in. --------------

Edited by: Carcosa Hali on 05/08/2008 01:40:24 As tragic as these events have been, they have inspired a wealth of aid from the capsuleer community. That the sight of these youths will be restored is no longer in question. It is truly heartwarming to see that in this time of strife there are many who hold such charity in their hearts.
The underlying cause though, is not so simple.
Mental illness is a terrible and subtle thing.. often not manifesting until the mid to late 20s. It is particularly tragic in cases of childhood onset such as these. If the victims come from a troubled background, the symptoms are often mistaken for character flaws, casting otherwise good children into roles for which they were not meant. Many brilliant individuals have been lost to madness, never reaching the potential that lies within them.
*she gnaws on her thumbnail distractedly for a moment*
I would like to personally offer my assistance in defraying the costs of psychiatric treatment for these boys, up to and including corrective cybernetics. I have opened a 5 million ISK credit line with Eifyr & Co. for the use of this clan, both in the treatment of these youths and others within their communities. Please forward any additional invoices for transport and delivery costs to Naqam Heavy BioIndustries.

Hilarious, isn't it? On the one hand, you have acts of charity from scum, and on the other hand you have... acts of charity from scum. I'm tempted to front the money out of my own wallet, so that the boys don't owe their eyesight to a zombie, an Amarrian or a self-obsessed moron.

Why stop at buying them new eyes? Why not pay to put them through capsuleer training? Then the lives of hundreds or even thousands of crewmen could be subject to the whim of someone who once thought it would be a good idea to pour corrosive dye in their eyes.
You know, why stop there? Why not send every idiot that makes the news through a capsuleer program? Then space would be littered with mouth-breathing simpletons flying fantastically expensive spacecraft and no idea what they're doing. (Actually, someone might already be doing this.) _

Exactly, these morons need a long spacewalk with an empty oxygen tank. I shudder to think these fools, once healed, might actually become someone important, and be responsible for something vital.

Ethan Verone, A man who spends the majority of his time taking things away from people suddenly feels the need to give something back to a couple of brainless hero-worshipping kids? Maybe you should add "Part-Time Humanitarian" to your job title?

I had thought such efforts were rather common for Veto, in truth, although the reactions here seem to belie that. What better way to gain recruits than to portray yourself as better than your opponent Empire? Isn't that how the Angels nearly took Skarkon?

Charity is charity whatever the motive.
What I find most disturbing is the lack of decent role models fo Brutor kids such as these. Any Brutor not pertaining to the 'hard' stereotype find themselves ostracised and bullied. Its this constant desire to appear tough which leads to accidents such as these.
I wonder if Sanmatar Shakor will now devote more of the republic budget to healthcare?

It's a shame that some of my former corpmates insist on turning an act of charity into an opportunity for bitterness and spite. I would expect such from your now CEO, but not from you.

I have no problems with any group donating to a cause, be it one of the 4 nations, Guristas, Sansha, Angels, or whoever.
I tried to keep this to myself, and not stir up any problems. But I find the actions of these two boys just plain stupid.
Mental illness or not, they deserve whatever consequences their actions cost them. If I hit the self-destruct in my Raven, are you going to see people rushing to help replace my loss? Of course not, you would point and laugh, as you very well should. Don't treat them any different than you would any other person in the expanses of New Eden; point, laugh, ridicule, and make jest of their ignorance.

The bank comes to your aid and reimburses you for your loss.
These are, as you say, boys. Children.
Just like you have the bank to help you recover from your mistakes, children have society.
