VETO CORP ANNOUNCEMENT
The gift of sight is something that trillions of us take for granted every day of our lives as we go about our business, living our lives.
This fact of life becomes more apparent and hits home harder when we hear the plight of two youngsters in Rens whom have unintentionally blinded themselves in a bid to take on the appearence of their idol, Maleatu Shakor. After returning to the center of the cluster after some time away in Venal and hearing of their plight, I must say the news brought with it a sharp sting of sadness, albeit not without a sense of irony.
The irony being that in a bid to honor Maleatu Shakor, a beacon of freedom in these new times for the Republic, these two youngsters have unintentionally removed some of their own freedom to live to the fullest, by accidentally destroying one of their most important senses.
It is my fond hope that both of these individuals will soon once again be able to watch their new Republic prosper with their own eyes, and watch their idol Maleatu Shakor address his people.
As such, this is a personal request from Veto Corp to the clan of these two Matari citizens to contact me either here, or in private, to arrange full transfer of the funds for corrective therapy for these two teens.
I await your contact with great hope.
Regards,
Ethan Xavier Verone Chief Executive & Executor Veto Corp

It's sad that some think that Shakor's greatness comes from his appearance rather than from his words, thoughts, and deeds despite his appearance. Luckily, as you say, technology exists to help these children recover from their tragic mistake, but I truly hope that -- more that any physical remedy -- someone takes the time to help them understand what it is that truly makes a man great.

I would be willing to donate a couple million ISK. I would also like to make a suggestion. It looks like we have more than enough donations to pay for their recovery. I suggest we take the extra funds and create some kind of a scholarship fund for these kids. They seem to be in need of some kind of meaningful guidance and education. There can be hardly a more poignant act that symbolizes Matari stupidity and ignorance.
The Matari are not blind to the truth because they cannot see it, they are unable to see the truth because they make themselves blind.
This act, however tragic, is just the latest expression of Matari self-delusion.
The Matari are a lost people, in more ways than one. ____

I knew Brutors aren't all that smart, but jezz. Even being mentally unstable, how does industrial dye into your eyes seem remotely like a good idea? And if they were 'mentally imbalanced' shouldn't they have been under watch, even more so if they self-harm.
This news doesn't make me laugh, but it hardly makes me feel sorry for them as it was self-inflicted.

Edited by: Carcosa Hali on 05/08/2008 01:40:24 As tragic as these events have been, they have inspired a wealth of aid from the capsuleer community. That the sight of these youths will be restored is no longer in question. It is truly heartwarming to see that in this time of strife there are many who hold such charity in their hearts.
The underlying cause though, is not so simple.
Mental illness is a terrible and subtle thing.. often not manifesting until the mid to late 20s. It is particularly tragic in cases of childhood onset such as these. If the victims come from a troubled background, the symptoms are often mistaken for character flaws, casting otherwise good children into roles for which they were not meant. Many brilliant individuals have been lost to madness, never reaching the potential that lies within them.

I would like to personally offer my assistance in defraying the costs of psychiatric treatment for these boys, up to and including corrective cybernetics. I have opened a 5 million ISK credit line with Eifyr & Co. for the use of this clan, both in the treatment of these youths and others within their communities. Charity is charity whatever the motive.
What I find most disturbing is the lack of decent role models fo Brutor kids such as these. Any Brutor not pertaining to the 'hard' stereotype find themselves ostracised and bullied. Its this constant desire to appear tough which leads to accidents such as these.
I wonder if Sanmatar Shakor will now devote more of the republic budget to healthcare?

I tried to keep this to myself, and not stir up any problems. But I find the actions of these two boys just plain stupid.
Mental illness or not, they deserve whatever consequences their actions cost them. If I hit the self-destruct in my Raven, are you going to see people rushing to help replace my loss? Of course not, you would point and laugh, as you very well should. Don't treat them any different than you would any other person in the expanses of New Eden; point, laugh, ridicule, and make jest of their ignorance.

Kimochi appears in a live feed window. She looks angry.
Jen I'm sorry if my comments appear to be barbed, but having our entire corp uprooted and then torn in half because our ex-CEO couldn't keep her damn pants on, then being set to red and told that the people who I considered to be friends - family even - would happily hunt me down and kill me if ordered to by their FC will do that to a person!
You show me someone who wouldn't be personally insulted by that and i'll show you someone with a heart of pure stone. So don't try to pretend you have the moral high-ground here, because i'm really not that stupid.
She sits back in her chair and sighs, taking a moment to compose herself.
I don't mean to turn this thread into a slagging match so i'll just leave it at that.
As for the blind boys, children or not they should have some sense of self preservation if they hope to survive. Frankly if they thought that pouring industrial-grade dye into their eyes would somehow make them 'cool', then they deserve to have their eyesight taken away.

Who'd have thought it, I agree with this.
If I would have pulled a stunt like that when I was growing up, my parents would have made me pay for the procedure myself (as any good Caldari parent would). Teach me a lesson in doing stupid things. If I was unable to pay for it myself... I'd better learn how to make ISK quickly and while blind.
I remember once, I was tinkering with our neighbor's atmospheric transport and accidentally caused a backup chemical thruster to burn the lower portion of my right leg. Flash fried to the bone, from 4 inches below the knee to the tips of my toes was gone. That cost me half of my savings I had set back for Pilot training... cost me an extra 2 years of my life before I could make the money back and enter Pilot school.
Granted, now that I've jumped clones a few times, and I'm pretty sure my original body is floating somewhere in the Citadel region, I don't even have the scars to remind me. These two chose to be idiots, they chose to blind themselves, and they don't deserve sympathy.
If someone pays their way into Pilot training, I wish a mindlock on the both of them.

The important thing is to turn the experience into a lesson and learn from it; and the only real way to learn from something like that is to suffer the consequences of your own actions.
I say let the kids pay for their own surgery. Giving them handouts is disturbingly akin to rewarding them for their stupidity, which is absolutely not the thing to do in this situation. We shouldn't even be getting involved in this at all, but at the absolute VERY most loan them the money and let them pay it back over a number of years. Even then they'd be getting off easy in my opinion.

Second chances of course, but they should earn them. To be handed something on a silver plater like they are apparently going to get, will only teach them to expect something for nothing in the future.

Once again, you remind me of the naivete of the Thukker and their simple mindset that led me to find my own family among the free pirates and outlaws of the cluster.

Ethan, unlike the majority of us, is actually the good guy. The vast majority of his ISK is actually a result of his earlier business ventures - most more legitimate than the entire Caldari State. While the rest of us get our "blood money" from piracy and market trading, Ethan never takes from his corp as he has no need.

The effect is equal to all involved. In fact, Ethan is known to hate the Amarr Empire even more than any other government in the whole of New Eden. Piracy in low-sec Minmatar systems affects all who fly there, including the slavers who attempt to infiltrate the weaker security the Republic has there.
Originally by: Nebulous To the relevent clans of this unfortunate event, please do not accept any money from Verone or any of his organisation, I am sure the other arranged fund raisers will be more than adequate for the teenagers corrective surgery.
I often tease Ethan about his Gallente "bleeding heart" problem. But while I might be the kind of person you wish to tar Ethan's image with, I still have some small amount of support for the Republic and her children. I endorse his proposal, but only because I know he has a moral high-ground I severely lack.
Besides, Eldar, since when have the Thukker ever given two hoots about the Republic? I'll tell you when:- When the Covenant and the Thukker worked together to undermine the Amarr Empire.
It's been a long time since our 'Tribe' has ever been of a moral position to judge even outlaws.

*Nebulous out*
You would do well to take a leaf out of Meb's book, things often aren't as they seem.
Too often people jump in without exploring the facts that lie behind the visage.

Yes Meb has much to say but her words are as empty as her soul it seems, she talks about the Thukker tribe as though everyone in our tribe is of same ilk and that we are all of piratical intent, the truth is that only the minority of us are piratical(which is debateable as most of it comes under us protecting our home in the GW), most of us are nomadic and keep ourselves to ourselves only uniting with the other tribes when the need arises.
Verone! as of late you have been making many bold claims of supporting the minmatar and being against slavery, I have been a pod pilot for a long time and have spent much time fighting against slavery and siding with minmatar freedom fighters, you and your organisation have been reported many times in the past for attacking anti slaver organisations be it Electus matari, Namtz'aar k'in, Fate weavers or Ushra'khan, the last mentioned alliance Ushra'khan you engaged in a full scale attack on them in providence which only added to massive amounts more of our people being enslaved while rescources were stretched to the limit by you and your motley crew. Maybe then you can enlighten me on any facts I may have failed to explore behind this so called visage?

Oh dear, twice in one topic I'm gonna have to correct you,
Originally by: Nebulous Yes Meb has much to say but her words are as empty as her soul it seems, she talks about the Thukker tribe as though everyone in our tribe is of same ilk and that we are all of piratical intent, the truth is that only the minority of us are piratical(which is debateable as most of it comes under us protecting our home in the GW), most of us are nomadic and keep ourselves to ourselves only uniting with the other tribes when the need arises.
I never once portrayed the Thukker Tribe (in all it's heterogenous glory), as a piratical organisation. In fact, compared to most other groups, the Tribe is the least definable. With at least two major corporations being almost completely different in operation, it's hard to pinpoint the Tribe as anything - and pirates would probably be everyone's last bet.
Don't get me wrong. Apart from my sister and my mother (where ever she is, if she's still alive), I've no desire to ever associate myself with the Thukker again, except to find out if they still kill more Amarr than Republic. Other than that, you can tar me with the same brush as the Covenant and her allies, as I've always portrayed myself as. I'm no saint. Hell, I probably deserve the name witch (although Elsebeth will have my head should it be brought up again). But my words are far from empty, Eldar. I've seen the best and worst in many and I doubt I'm the worst in anyones books. I sure as hell don't speak empty words.

Ushra'Kahn are far from saintly. Working against the Republic, working with Blood Raiders, and siding with terrorists are hardly exemplars of stand-up behaviour. While Veto were only mercenaries in a multi-faceted engagement, I'm sure that our straight-forward and legal approach was easily depictable on moral grounds, compared with U'Ks dealings in the past.
Now, I'd rather not go on about this, but it appears, as with many nay-sayers in this thread, that you could do with a little education from outside sources on Ethan's business behaviour and moral standings. When an Angel can fall in love with an outlaw, isn't it time you questioned your opinions on morality?
Perhaps GW has been a little outta the scene lately, but I don't think I'm alone in thinking that you need to catch up a little on current and past figures in modern pod-pilot politics.
All respects due, Eldar.

Please excuse my ramblings. Ethan Verone doesn't need mine or anyones justification. While his business dealings haven't been always as transparant, his Gallente bleeding heart nearly always has.
I've said my piece. I recommend the lot of you find out more about the man before jumping down his throat. I don't think I've found a more disgusting paragon of good in the whole cluster. None of us are hero's, but some of us at least aim for humanity. While I find myself far from such good, I'm content to know that at least one of our corporation clings to such lofty ideals.
My apologies boss for the derail.

Why do you apolagise Meb? There is no need to, please do not confuse a clash of opinions with a derailment of a topic, when someone is against the ropes it's only natural that they try to dismiss anyones counter opinions with a claim of derailment or lack of understanding, I always voice my opinion to things close to my heart and only apolagise if I feel I have done or said something wrong, in this case I have not.

Confirmation that you're as physically blind as Shakor himself.
I have nothing more to say to someone who's physically unwilling to explore the facts before he soliders off on the path of a ranting bigot.

So be it, I have explored and higlighted a number of facts about you and your organisation but you offer no counter facts of your own.
As for the bigot remark? Well if you think insulting me aids your cause then you are free to think that.

I hope the relevant parties are not so blind as to miss out on this PR stunt from a known pirate organisation. This is not charity, this is blood money.
Just imagine if this stunt actually worked and Mr Verone became an idol to some of the weaker minded young Matari among us. Many could turn to crime and murder in an effort to mirror their idol.
A sad day that would be.

Originally by: Aodha Khan He can only insult as he has no base to stand on, he is no better than a maggot from the Empire itself.
After seeing the things I have in such a short life, and being born into bondage on Oris to a holder who knew nothing of reason or goodwill, I can safely say that I do not take exception to many things Mr Khan, but to your comparison of Ethan Verone to an Amarrian of all things I do, you vile swine.
It makes my blood boil to even think a fellow Matari would stoop so low as to insult someone who attempts to help our people. You look for evidence that this is not a PR stunt? I'm living proof that yourself and Nebulous deserve the title of bigots!
Why don't you ask me of the thousand along with my self that were bought into freedom from the hold of a Bestower class three years ago?
Why don't you ask me of the millions that pour out of our wallet on a monthly basis to support and assist those our corporation frees?
Why don't you ask Electus Matari of the thousands liberated from the formerly named TES Divine Fury that were cared for and treated for injury by Veto Corp before being released to them?
Why don't you ask Ethan himself about the billions invested in the Sisters Of Eve when the descovery was made of the mess of childcare in the State?
You really have no idea Khan. There are countless more instances of assising slaves to freedom, and former slaves in starting fresh that I can roll out, but frankly I feel as if I'm wasting my time with you. I chose this DED callsign to honor the man who freed me from The Empire, and continues to free thousands of Matari whenever the opportunity arises, while the Republic has stood by for years, wrestling with politics and making a joke of itself in Yulai while Matari people suffered at the hands of the Empire.
I work for nothing but the successful training of combat fresh capsuleers into people whom can defend themselves, and the freedom of as many Matari as I can. It makes me ashamed to share the same blood as you when I hear such pathetic words spew from your mouth.
You should be ashamed of yourself, and the insult you just paid to your heritage by taking a shot at someone who has aimed to help.
