Orivanna	Posted - 2008.08.05 18:21:00 - [1] I recently started making the push into symphonic metal music genre and I absolutely love it despite the "goth" stereotype usually asigned to it. Does anyone know of good bands that play similar to music to Nightwish, Evanescence, and Lacuna Coil? Female lead singer is a big plus. Thanks!

I think you fail at reading comprehension. *I did not say they were symphonic, I said that they were progressive and a good bit of their music is orchestral. This means that their music is extremely complicated, deep, and mature, thus similar* to "symphonic metal" and worth mentioning in my mind. Godforfrigganbid that I say that a band as multifaceted as Dream Theater may peak some interest in individuals that like metal that is not thrash. Music works on a continuum and metal is no different. I bet you would jump down my throat if I said OPETH was progressive metal and not Swedish Black Metal. If you want to get technical, I doubt many of the bands that are found in a list of symphonic metal bands have ever produced anything that fits the definition of a symphony. Maudlin of the Well, it's more of an Avant-Garde Metal, but they use enough symphonic instruments. Therion Goes Classic - Rise Of Sodom And Gomorrah Therion - Live in Mexico City - 04 Asgard(Check out the solo at the end amazing) Therion*Birth of Venus Illegitima( I <3 Martina ) Chalice are another excellent band more of a doom sound (kind of like early My Dying Bride with Female vocals) Chalice-Liaising Pandora Chalice-To Death Betrothed Fixed and in before Dietrich and Co. The Gathering, Flowing Tears, Guano Apes, Kidneythieves, Tapping the Vein, Rasputina, Snake River Conspiracy, Collide and certain tracks by Curve spring to mind, although there's plenty out there. I started out liking those exact bands also, back when Evanescence were still cool, Tarja were still in Nightwish and nobody had even heard of Lacuna Coil - but tastes progress over time and you may find yourself doing a 180 and liking a genre you despied previously. At least that's why I listen mostly to Progressive Trance/House these days - Infectious -

Stratovarious - Not really symphonic, but they have a similar sound. Blind Guardian - All their stuff since Nightfall in Middle Earth. Their older albums are thrash but still good thrash. Therion - Hit or miss (mostly miss these days ). Theli and Secret of the Runes kick ass though. Might offend some people (not Satanic, but definitely strong pagan themes) Nox Arcana, Midnight Syndicate - Not metal (more atmospheric) but they have a good symphonic sound Kamelot, Nightwish, Symphony X, Rhapsody of Fire, Freedom Call - already mentioned but I'll plug 'em again. Also check out Luca Turilli's solo albums. Summoning.. hmm.. haven't heard of 'em, have to check them out. ---

And yeah, female vocalists are often annoying.. but then so are overly whiny male ones, which are really far too common. I find female vocalists especially annoying when used in a hiphop hook/chorus while everything else is done by male voices. Instant fail. Also, curse you people for mentioning Kamelot, now I'll have to listen to Forever for 30min+ on repeat again
