SOE could ruin anything.
I played EQ. EQ didnt' suck because we'd nothing else to play. Then I moved to SWG. I'd say I played from day one but none of us did. Day one the logon server died a horrid grizly death and we all started on day 2.
SOE had a skill system, you could be nearly anything as long a you didn't want to be too independant. Problem was you had a skill cap and you could only really master two professions. Imagine having to lose all your Caldari sp to train into Galentee and you're there. No refunds, just a "badge" for having become a master whatever you had before.
The crafting system was nice, except on one patch they removed all the adjustments which didn't actually do anything.
Smugglers were useless.
The flight sim blew goats.
Excellent player housing good wardrobe possibilities.
And any NPC with a stick or a rock, god help you if he was bare handed, can easily dispatch your sorry tech using laser pistol carying butt.
Finally, the universe was not truly three dimensional. You couldn't climb, jump or fall. Oh yeah and after half an hour of cruising your speeder bike caught on fire and exploded.
I'll buy an SOE game the day someone pays me inordinate amounts of money to do it.

I would never purchase an SOE game, not even with a cash reward. They've even begun to start a one month free trial for previous players in SWG so people can play again to "revisit the fun they had in the past". Which is just a clever coverup for the fact subscription numbers are down INCREDIBLY since the NGE hit live.

This x infinity
BFR's abso****lutely killed Planetside. Though I must admit, hotdropping on them from a Phantasm with a team of grunts is some of the best fun to be had in that game...next to the Burster of course.

Never forgive SOE for what they did to Planetside
Best fun ive had in any game, met a lot of good people playing it, and then they introduced biffers. tossers. the only people who liked that were the twitch kiddies and the idiots, they were the ones whining loudest on the forums cos they couldnt play the tactical game.
CCP need to go a long way to get that bad. tho with the change up of devs and the way the last three massive nerf announcements have gone its looking similar to what happened to Planetside before the end. hopefully they have more sense then those clowns at SOE and can pull it all together. ...in accordance with the prophecy |

I played SWG from launch day till the NGE. I could forgive SOE for everything they did before the NGE, but after that I just couldn't take it. Essentially they said...remember that game you have been paying non-stop for years? Well it is gone. All those professions you learned and RE-learned, all of that is gone...now play this kiddie version.
CCP is doing things right. Every game has to have balance or things quickly spiral out of control. If they didn't make the speed fixes pretty soon EVERYONE would a nano ship and the game would lose variety very quickly.
To their credit though, SOE did get some things right. When they released the player hunting bounty system it created a whole new game for me. Hunting jedi with droids and pwning them my pistoleer/smuggler/bounty hunter hybrid class (last ditch FTW baby!) was the most gratifying experience ever. At first when you killed a jedi they actually LOST experience points. There was nothing better then tracking down a jedi while he was AFK farming rancors. Easy pickins that.
Now if CCP would just implement bounty hunter probe droids.... "From Hell's heart I stab at thee, for hates sake I spit my last breath at thee." |

MBH/TKM/CH ftw!
SOE ruined a class game. Now I hear some rumours about Bioware producing KOTOR online. Just hope to God that SOE don't get their hands on it!

Originally by: Concorduck the only PVP-breaking change that could take CCP at the level of SoE would be completely removing guns and missiles, and adding yet more variants of mining lasers.

That's what scares me the most about SoE. They have a history of releasing many A+ games. Planetside, Infantry and SW:galaxies are some of the best games i've ever played. SOE really knows how to make an excellent game and yet they still manage to completely destroy them with a gamebreaking change after a year or two.
Infantry: Pay to play. Out of nowhere they started charging for it. --DEAD--. It's free again and I highly reccommend taking a look at it. It's an awesome game for having been developed in the mid 90s.
Planetside: BFRs. Super powerful bots. "Balanced" by having a 30 minute timer yet being the 1 weapon that could easily survive it --DEAD--.
Starwars galaxies: NGE. I mean seriously? They literally tore down a sucessful game in such a way that it wasn't even the same game anymore. The new system wasn't even any good. --DEAD-- _______________

I am surprised to see no one mentioning EQ2. I got into EQ2 after I became bored with WoW and found that it was a similar game but with a more interesting difficulty level (like "medium" instead of "lulz welcome to level 70 have some epicz). Then, one day, it was like NGE all over again. My brother logged in to find out that his wizard was no longer a DD class, but a pet class. The entire mechanics of my assassin changed. I couldn't duo with my partner anymore, and ended up quitting.
Of course, CCP really isn't doing anything like that at all currently, and if you are one of the sobbing nano-***s crying about the speednerfs, you are only demonstrating the one-dimensional nature of your uncreative mind. Inveniam viam aut faciam |

I played SWG before mounts and vehicles were introduced, and it was awesome. I quit shortly before the CU, and I came back for a while after it but before NGE. It was... okay after the CU. I was mostly playing the social aspect, being a totally oddball entertainer the second time around. Choreographed dances with four female Twi'leks? Hell yes. The crafting system, as stated by previous posters, was awesome, but it was a grind fest to level up. No one wanted anything other than the best.
Being a Combat Medic, strictly on the Combat and Medical side (the hell with poison and disease) was really my cup of tea. The CU and NGE killed it mightily dead.
SoE = Lose. CCP haven't and I believe never will come close. ----------------- I have a cargo space fetish. I like the echo. |

I'd chip in my .02 for FunCom's epic thrash-a-class and gut, then gut some more, then forget about every class but Soldiers.. and then people not realizing how bad Anarchy Online became jumping on the AoC funboat...oh man I feel bad for you guys. Well, a tiny bit. Shoulda read up a bit more on FunCom.
That'd be a great thread: Who fails more: SOE vs FC?

SOE fails more but only because of the spectacular AMOUNT of failure (they have patched more than four games into oblivion), Funcom might win on a per-capita basis though... (Like launching their game with no functionality for weeks, mail/AH/bank)
