I don't generally respond to OT posts, but, SoE, unquestionably! IMO, there is not even a comparison that can be made.

the only PVP-breaking change that could take CCP at the level of SoE would be completely removing guns and missiles, and adding yet more variants of mining lasers. -----------------------------------------

Actualy, its not grand scale, but the battle of stalingrad was fought that dirty..
The Germans actualy had a manual and had training in how to fight with the isued shovel. And they normaly had it sharpend like a razor blade for use in combat....other than that...ya

SWG and the NGE?
Oh dear.
A good analogy would be the US government replacing the brains of the lead scientists on the Manhattan Project with bags of leaves.
CCP and the "need for speed" nerf, is more like getting the scientists drunk.

Haha. I played Star Wars Galaxies from the first day it was out(and beta) and I can say without a doubt, SOE has the WORST track record with maintaining and adding to MMO's. From the Combat Upgrade to the 9 month later Trials of Obi-Wan NGE sneak in(which they so graciously allowed people to return for money back). And look at PlanetSide, I beta tested that game as well, it had such potential to be a great game, and SOE messed up it like they always do. CCP is nowhere even CLOSE in comparison to SOE. CCP hasn't ruined any games yet, SOE has two and counting. ---------------------------------------- Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes.

Another really cool thing about the original SWG was the crafting system, which was, and I believe stil is, the crafting system with the most depth and flexibility of anything available.
Each material used in crafting had one or more quality modifiers attached to it. For example, an ore mined from a particular location might have a modifier that increased the firing speed of a weapon, or affect its accuracy. Ores mined from different locations (which changed periodically) might have higher or lower modifiers and thus, affect the finished product for better or worse.
A weapon crafted with junk mats wouldn't be very good, but you could pick it up for maybe a few thousand credits. One made with all prime mats would have incredible stats and would sell for perhaps a hundred thousand credits (just an example)
The original SWG was a sandbox game similar in nature to EVE. With all the different mat qualities one profession became prospector, someone who would seek out prime quality locations and either mine himself or even sell the locations to others who would do the mining.
Like EVE, there were organizations and complex supply, manufacturing/sales chains. There were untold numbers of ways to occupy your time in SWG either in or out of combat. It was a very flexible game, and set in the SW universe.
Then SoE turned it into a third rate (I'm being generous here) WoW clone.

This. I left when the Vanu became the master race. That and the game became somewhat stale.

This, indeed.
I was a Master Armorsmith in SWG and sold some of the best Ubese armor you could get on the server, which a lot of people used for PVE (most mobs did kinetic damage). Took me months to collect the materials, but it was worth it to get those resists. Until doctor buffs came along and made things completely insane, I just loved having the capability to really adjust my product to the point that people would ask for my stuff by name.
I miss the crafting system in SWG. After the NGE came along I just didn't have the heart for it, even though I had gone a different route by then, I had always planned to go back to crafting. Taking it away and making the rest of the game an emasculated shell of its former self drove me and everyone I knew out of the game. That's when I came to EVE. 'Course, these days I'm not much of a carebear, but I do still get something out of building things. Problem is you really can't get that satisfaction in EVE, or not the same way. Every object has the same stats, no matter who made it. All you can do is get really good at making the same things, and compete on efficiency, not quality. I always preferred to compete on quality.

SOE without a doubt I wouldnt buy another MMO from them if someone put a gun to my head. Like alot of folks here I started SWG right before Pub 9 had the honor of Permadeathing a glowstick with my MBH/MCarb, But thats another story. Soe should be a permanent class in College of how not to develop a game.
On a side note to the crafter they changed that with GU5 so that you can reconstruct weapons to get the best part from it or something but its all server capped so basically you can have different weapons but the same damage more eyecandy so its not Mando vs Jedi

I tried the SWG trial a few years ago, post sh*t hitting the fan, and I lasted about 2 hours before I lost the will to live.
CCP however, always seem to make me come back.

That crafting system would be pretty cool in EVE. Instead of fixed minerals needed to make stuff, using higher grade minerals (found in lower sec systems) could improve items stats, for example a lighter or less dense mineral would improve the speed of a ship, but reduce it's armour and/or hull hp, and vice versa for other, higher mass materials.

CCP is not ruining EVE, its taking it few year back to 2003.
When it was actualy fun to play as every ship werent zipping araund 10km/s.
EVE and speed nerfs got long history, people who joined after 2006 shuld just sit tight and shut up.
Honestly, There shuld be rule, that no character, under threat of permanet forum ban, culd voice theye opinion abaut speed nerfs if they joined after 2006.
Forums whuld be that much happier plase.
