My parents both fought in the war, and I heard all the stories and saw all the propaganda films growing up. Yes, it was a terrible thing to do to a civilian populance, and there's hardly a person anywhere who will say that it's justified to direct starship weapons against civilians during a war, but you have to look at it from the perspectives of the political an military leaders of the time. By the time the secessionist movement had come into full swing, the megacorporations of Caldari Prime had been growing in power and influence and were throwing their financial weight around to encourage the government and peoples of the planet to break away from the Gallente Federation in order to secure financial advantages and avoid many of the taxes and regulations that had been placed on them.
When civil unrest reached its peak on Caldari Prime and terroroist acts became more commonplace, to where it wasn't safe for ethnic gallente citizens to speak freely, the federation navy tried to move in to restore order. The corporate security forces insisted that they would handle the problems, but never made more than a token effort. When the Chief Executive Panel declared the Caldari's secession and active hostilities broke out, guess where the megacorps stationed their cruisers- in a fragile station in space? No, they were in hardened hangers on the ground (or so the offical statements go- I haven't seen good reason to doubt that there were at least some ships based on the ground, but neither have I been able to find good evidence that much of the fleet was there).
So, while hundred kilogram bolts of plasmoid iron, lead and tungstun were raining down on the cities containing these warships, valliant pilots were fighting to buy time for the transports with their families and all their posessions were slowly taking flight. There is good reason for hard feelings on both sides, but consider this- if the offical Caldari state line is true, and the Gallente soldiers wanted nothing more than to take the planet and kill everybody on it, isn't it odd that so many slow, unarmed, and lightly armored transport ships made it off of a planet that was ringed with federation navy battleships?
I can respect your strong feelings on the issue, but it's my home too, and firing randomly upon "targets of opportunity", killing a captian and crew who know nothing of your cause or your battle, is not the way to find an answer.
