Does anyone think the in development Knights of the Old Republic Online and Warhammer 40,000 Online will be viable competitors against EVE? _________________

No. kotor 2 for example was released half heartedly and uncomplete. From what I heared they had removed a whole planet with quests just to comply with the schedule. Besides that, kotor 2 was horrible. Kotor 1 however was great, but I doubt they will recreate the fun from it.
My quess is the game will have a wonderful graphic but horrible storyline and horrible mission systems and long term goals. That is why AoC scored big in the first month. The graphich. That is why the people started to leave the game month after: Lack of very interesting goals. Among many things.
Its strange really. We have seen onlinegames come and go, come and go. and all the time EVE is growing steadfast and those who joins up seems to never leave! At least not for long...
I love EVE!

Edited by: Delvardious Kaesos on 11/08/2008 17:15:21 the KOTOR MMO will be awesome. As long as it's not headed by SOE. ---------------------------------------- Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes.

The KOTOR mmo is being developed by bioware. They made KOTOR1 but Obsidian were responsible for the half-assed sequel. I'm not saying I'm optimistic, though. Bioware may be a greta company but they're owned by EA now If they make a game thats close to a mix of kotor1 and SWG then it jsut might be enough to compete with EVE. If it is anything else then it won't be worth playing imo.

Lets not get into a discussion about the KOTOR games here. The fact remains that KOTOR II was probably a little too ambitious for it's 1 year development schedule. And even then, it didn't come out of it too badly. I enjoyed it myself. And lets not forget that enough of the unfinished content seems to have been left in the files so that third parties can and are putting them back in as best they can.
Anyway. Neither are going to be direct competitors with EVE unless they make extensive use of space flight mechanics. Otherwise they are just another MMO on the market, like WoW or AoC, and compete indirectly simply by existing. EVE will always at least have a certain level of hardcore players who like it for the PvP more than anything else anyway.

Direct competitors, no. But will you have time left for EVE? Force lightning FTW.

Some serious competition is just what EvE needs.
CONCORD provide consequences, not safety; only you can do that. |

Don't blame Obsidian for the bad quality of Kotor 2. They were gutted by LucasArts by having a strict 1 year deadline (for the entire game - which explains the number of re-used resources from Kotor 1). If they didn't amke the deadline, the project would have been scrapped. That's why so many things are missing and bugged in the second game - It could have been much better, if not for corporate pettiness.
The same goes for Kotor 1, which allegedly also had content stricken for the same reason. However, Bioware had more time to smoothen things out.

The problem is that eve is slowly trying to compete with games of that kind.

No.
The only viable competitors against the success of Eve Online are the decisions of CCP.
We will not walk in fear of one another. |
