Edited by: Elurilmar on 12/08/2008 15:00:26 I have finally reached the point of buying my first battlecruiser, but I'm torn between which one to buy. I love the drake's ability to tank, but dislike it's ability to do damage. I love the look and feel of a laser destruction harbinger, and the myrmidon just oozes pwn. My drone skills, laser skills, and missile skills are all around the same level (4s and a couple 5s). And I'd be using the ship mainly for mission running, but alos heping my merc corp out as they need.
What would you reccommend for a first BC?

if its mainly for missioning, id go with the drake. It doesnt need high skills to do missions decently

yes, for missions drake is the best, excellent tank, the ability to choose damage type, what more could you wish for?

Honestly I wouldn't debate battlecruisers too much, as you can move into level 4 missions quite easily. There's not much point in sticking with level 3 missions for long. I would look at what battleship you want to fly for missions, and then pick a BC of its race to help you train in the right direction.
Basically, if your end goal is dominix, there's not much point spending a lot of time in a Myrm, rather than just moving up to a dominix ASAP.

Drake for missioning. Drake can PvP in a pinch if set up right, but requires a ton of lvl5's and rigs.
Harb and Myrm do better in PvP on sensible lvl4 skills. -

So...what makes the Drake so much more popular than the Ferox? Is it just that most Caldari pilots prefer missiles over guns? Or is there something else I'm missing. I love my Ferox.

Less damage, less range, less tank, can't change damage types.

Fitting Drake: 8 hi slots, 6 mids, Ferrox: 7 hi's, 5 mids (IIRC)
Tanking Drake: tanking as a bonus and 6 mids. Its "Passive Tanking" is legendary. Great for AFK missions, tanking spawns on 2nd accounts, and not bad against PvP NOS eaters. Ferrox: No shield bonus, less mids, nuff said"
Dmg Drake: 7 missle bays, no cap, pick your damage, good at any range, 5% kinetic dmg bonus per level Ferrox: a Rail-platform, so youre stuck with Kin/Therm and stuck at a certain range, which aint good in missions.

Less damage, less range, less tank, can't change damage types.
Passive shield ferox missile boat was the standard L3 runner and capable of doing L4s, barely, long before the drake showed up. Perfectly capable of, slowly, killing stuff and perfectly capable of changing damage types and, outside of kinetic missiles, doing only marginally less DPS at the same range. Also, ferox can hit things up to about 120km with rails while the drake stops at 84km, at best, and that's without range boosting mods or rigs.
Furthermore, in at least one instance the ferox will out-tank or out-gank the drake, as a command battlecruiser. The ferox can fit launchers, a gang mod, and other odds and ends and end up with a better or equal tank and better or equal DPS due to having more powergrid than the drake. Granted this is a singular exception but it's there and useful in gang warfare, especially since most caldari ships are not good solo ships.

Again, you can easily ignore the rail bonus on the ferox and fit launchers, or launchers and rails/blasters, and the ferox does get a shield bonus, the same 5%/level resistance that the drake does. Don't know how you're coming up with "No shield bonus."
Furthermore, if you're going to consider using the ship as a tankle/aggro-magne then you might as well consider training up gang skills and fitting a shield harmonizing gang mod on the ship. The ferox can do it without pulling launchers, the drake's grid is so much lower than the ferox's that you need to pull at least 2 launchers to fit it.
___________
In most PvE situations the drake will be superior to the ferox, agreed, but some of the reasoning for this superiority are, in my opinion, poor at best and outright false at worst.
Edit: On a more constructive note, the myrmidon makes a good BC choice. At BC5 with good drone skills and good passive shield tank skills you ought to be able to handle almost every L4 mission in the game and get them done, sooner or later, or at least faster than you would with the drake.
Harbinger's a nice ship, especially from the T1 ammo not running out perspective, but lasers, like rails, aren't always the best choice. TBH, I like the hurricane for L3s, but it wasn't mentioned. If you're willing to go with oddball fits the shield tank myrmidon is probably your best bet for an L3 ship that'll slide into L4s, and if you don't switch to active armor it'll out-tank the dominix. ____________________

So is there any reason to fly a Ferox then, except for the cheaper price?
I currently have a Scorpion Battleship and a Ferox...I am wondering if I should liquidate my Ferox to help buy a Drake.
Right now I am using the Scorpion to run missions. it is clearly less efficient, but I like the way it looks and I like it's roomier drone bay. I originally got it because I am planning on getting into EW later on down the road.
Can anyone think of a reason to hold on to a Ferox?

Get a drake/raven, and if you like the graphic on the Scorp, get a Rattler for missions.

Passive shield tanked missile drake with 5 T2 hobs versus a passive shield tanked drone myrmidon with artillery and 5 T2 hammerheads. Drake out-tanks myrmidon by 20%, myrmidon puts out 20% more DPS.
Net result, both ships are roughly equal. Of course the extra DPS makes the difference in killing several ships in L4s and the drake is completely over-tanked for most L4s much less L3s.
Plus 20% DPS difference is not "a little dps." ____________________

If you want to run missions with the BC, the drake is the right answer.
On the topic of Drake vs. Ferox, the Ferox can do a few things the Drake can't. It is a fairly competent anti-support sniper. Not great, but not bad for the price. It's also a much better bait ship than the drake, since when people see a drake sitting alone on a gate they either think "bait" and bypass it or "that will take 17 hours to kill and net me 4 t2 heavy launchers" and bypass it. People see a Ferox and they think "noob! gank him!" despite the fact that a passive Ferox is a very tough nut to crack.

Eh, sure. I encourage you to train the Myrm - it has uses. I mean, I've used one recently to tank L4 missions (it's very very easy). You just don't have the appropriate level of gank to do it right. Especially with drone aggro issues.
No, for missions the Drake is so unbelievably better that it's incomprehensible. For PVP, the issue is decided based on whether you expect sentry guns to kill your T2 drones for you.

Actually, it's already trained.
My main can fly every T1 sub-capital combat ship with the only L3 ship skills being Amarr and Caldari battleship and can fly every T2 cruiser and BC for every non-Minmatar race. T2 medium blasters and rails and every T2 combat drone but Amarr and Caldari heavies.
Myrmidon's purely a PvE style choice for me since as far as my experiences go both ships are equal.
Myrmidon can do more direct damage but the drake does better single type damage and while the myrmidon can lose more of its DPS to poor aggro management it can also pack rep. drones and spares which the drake can't. ____________________

For PvP, use the Drake/Harbringer/Myrmidon/Hurricane. Yep, it's a rarely balanced ship class, there's no clear-cut winner. You're probably best off in a Harbringer for bigger gangs though.

Both are great pvp ships. The problem is most Drake pilots are carebears who don't know how to fit caldari for pvp.
Equally skilled, all the tier 2 battlecruiser are very balanced. I prefer my HAM Drake as it's seen me through a lot of combat. I use the drake almost exclusively and have a 30:1 Kill Death ratio flying solo or with extremely small gangs.
The drake has a lot of advantages:
Great effective hit points using a minimal buffer tank. Superior resistances The ability to choose damage types with a 25% bonus to kinetic Can dish out respectable damage using T2 Rage HAMs [15km] and superior range using T2 Javelin HAMs [75km] No tracking or cap issues Can kill nano ships or damage them enough to have them disengage. Can be more effective while fighting at gates. Everyone will perceive you as an easy target or will primary you last.

Granted, you need a lot of skills to fly this setup. But you really shouldn't be pvping in a battlecruiser unless you have most of your skills to level 4 or 5. This setup is ever better using shield extender rigs but they are quite expensive. If you loose your ship, odds are its to a gank, superior gang, or silly mistake. And in any of those cases, all the rigs in the world wont save you so might as well go cheap. It also gives you more isk to repair your overheated weapons!
Happy hunting.

That's only because you believe that Caldari ships use lowslots to aid their tank. Well, admittedly they do, the damage control. Everything else is BCUs. You'll find that the Caldari have preety solid buffer and preety damn good damage on top of having full tackle just like everyone else.

For mission definitely Drake...A drake with decent settings can easily tank most level 4 missions and out-tank a BS. TBH I run level 4's in Drake, and have no plans to change to a cnr or rattler(even though I can ).
Granted it's OP's first BC, Drake is a lot less likely to run into "accidents" in missions.
Drake CAN solo PvP. With nice HAM skills you can punch 500+ dps and still out-tank most other BC's. In fact, a glimpse on most Kill boards can tell you that Drake is the most common solo PvP ship.
Besides, Drake looks good...IMO...

That.
The only real skillpoint issue with the Drake is fitting if you're going for a three-BCU setup (so no grid mods, etc) which requires AWU V+3% implant (fits with AWU IV +3% grid + named MWD).
AWU IV being required is nothing special, anyway, even though some other BCs can be fit without it (Hurricane,Myrmidon) without losing too much. The Drake is arguably less skill-intensive to master then the Cyclone/Hurricane (or even, arguably, Myrmidon) thanks to using only two weapon systems.

I was actually skilling towards it (lacked super skirmish leader 5 and mind-chips 5), but with webs being nerfed and speed being decreased to a level where I'll never have to deal with a ship orbiting me at 20, I don't see a need for it.
2 domi webs was a little expensive though. I was considering replacing one with a tracking disruptor. 50% decrease to optimal and falloff, anyone?

For level 3's you have the benefit of customizable damage types. For level 4's the DPS hit you take when not using kinetic missiles often means you deliver LESS damage (and a Drake in a level 4 needs every ounce of firepower it can lay it's hands on)
Plus the Drake can be fantastically useful in PVP when using HAM's + buffer tank. It isn't the hardest hitting BC out there but it's sturdy buffer combined with at least blistering firepower is spectacularly effective.

Drake is a good ship and fun to fly. Problem with skillin towards caldari battlecruisers is that you only got one option - the ferox doesnt work very well in small gang pvp, for fleets it might tho.
I like the cyclone, cheap rigs, tanks good and does good damage, it just depends on the new scrambler to safe a medslot, and the hurricane is pretty good, too - my advise is that if you wonna stay with battlecruisers for a while, train minm. or gallente - both are fun to fly, the harbinger is just boring and the prophecy a waste of time.
If you gonna go for battleships soon after that, gallente or caldari.

Any good reason for gateguns shooting drones and thus removing dronebased ships from pirating?

Tanking Drake: tanking as a bonus and 6 mids. Its "Passive Tanking" is legendary. Great for AFK missions, tanking spawns on 2nd accounts, and not bad against PvP NOS eaters. Ferrox: No shield bonus, less mids, nuff said"
Dmg Drake: 7 missle bays, no cap, pick your damage, good at any range, 5% kinetic dmg bonus per level Ferrox: a Rail-platform, so youre stuck with Kin/Therm and stuck at a certain range, which aint good in missions.
Yes but a ferox isnt G A Y if u dont want to be like the 9675947973 other ppl who trianed a drake for lev 4 misisons, untill i learned better, be cool and fly the ferox (was my first bc ^^).
The day flying a misisleboat is more fun than flying a gun-boat wont really come quick imo poudly annoying fc's since 2007

PvE = use Drake
PvP = use Drake for close range stuff, Ferrox for more sniper stuff.
Thats it. Thread over.
