http://uk.news.yahoo.com/itn/20080812/tuk-speeding-biker-clocked-at-130mph-dba1618.html
On the above link you will see a story about a biker that has been jailed for 15 months for riding his bike like a maniac, a worthy sentence you might think? I would also agree apart from what would happen if we changed the scenario.
The scenario i'm talking about is that we should imagine that this was a car thief, the car thief driving a car he has just stolen at break neck speeds past schools and other built up areas where the chance of pedestrian deaths would be greatly increased, while he's driving like a maniac he smashes into a few other cars as well as the police cars that are chasing him and of course destroying the poor victims car he has just stolen, when the police finally arrest him he laughs in their faces and shouts various insults at them and mocks how he this is yet another one of his car theft exploits.
Now heres the best bit, the court case! The judge slaps him on the wrist with a suspended sentence with maybe a few hours community service, he also bans him from driving for a year on top of the bans he has already recieved for doing similar things, this ban to take effect if/when he actually gets a license (laughable tbh).
The above what I've said is not based on one event but based on many similar crimes you hear about on the news everyday, the point of the matter is that the justice system here is a joke, criminals are protected and law abiding citizens get pounded with the full weight of the law constantly through fines for being harmlessly drunk on the street or speeding 2mph over the speed limit.

The video looked so cool Thing is he could of easily caused a death. Say he caused a car to swerve and it hit another car or a tree...

not to mention the trauma if he were to come off his bike to the people who saw it happen, a guy falling at that speed, even if nothing hard is hit will be shreaded

I'm sorry but "law abiding citizen" does not correspond with (and I quote):
130mph chase 23-mile chase by 17 police cars and a helicopter

I think some of you are getting a bit side tracked with the point I was making, the biker deserved what he got, but had he stolen the motorbike with no license etc he most definately would not have been punished as severley. I never said he was a law abiding citizen either, the point I made there was seperate.

What do you mean by if he had stolen the bike withouthaving a driving permit he would not recieve as harsh a penalty? If this is true then the system is definately backwards.
In Virginia, US, unless you are a juevinaile without a liscense, penalties for diving without a liscense or being uninsured are not light at all.

Yes, there have been some teens who have stolen more cars than in 'Gone in Sixty Seconds', without a drivers license, insurance or tax, who have been given less punishments every time they are caught. Of course with the current political party making laws left right and centre, targeting law abiding citizens and not building more prisons since 1997, (which are now filled with senior citizens who didn't pay the ludicrous council tax increases and foreign criminals who should under the law be deported but arent!) they cant actually be sent to prison because its a non-violent crime.

Yeah this can be a problem, but here in the states we have what is called the 3 strikes law in some states, which can really suck. Suck in the sense that you can be thrown in jail for 30 years for simple possesion of drugs or other minor non-violent crimes if it is your 3rd offense. It is kind of a double edge sword on both sides of the pond. Buy yes, if someone is an adult and they do this without a liscense they should face the same charges and more, potentially including reckelss endangerment and attempted manslaughter charges, IMHO.

TBH, I used to have that very same modal bike (ZX600rr) and 130mph isnt its full speed. I reached just under 165mph on mine .... along the A130 between Chelmsford and the A127 junction. If the road wasnt so bad I might have been able to squeeze out another 3-4mph ... not bad for a 600cc Ive been clocked (by the police) doing 127mph (top speed) on my Honda 1200cc Pan-European on the M11 (south of the M25) and I followed a speed test between an unmarked Volvo and marked policecar up the M11 just short of Cambridge that was at 140+mph on my old Honda VFR800. Just to upset Nebulous, I wasnt given a ticket when I was stopped and the speed test coppers just waved byebye at the Ely junction.
Its not the speed but its the dangerous riding that gets the coppers and the courts upset the most. Speed in the right hands isnt as bad as recklessness on the roads. As far as we know, that guy might have a string of previous convictions for the same type of offence and the gaol time is his reward. Dont just look at things on their face value.

:Newsflash:
Just about every sports bike rider does speeds like this week in week out. What would be the point in buying one unless you did?
If you take his speed out of the equation, I didn't see much wrong in the clip to be fair; he took up a decent enough position in the road to deal with any hazards.
As for the: "130mph chase 23-mile chase by 17 police cars and a helicopter"
Crash helmet + ear plugs and sports bike mirrors mean most of the time you don't have a Scooby whatÆs going on behind you. But 17 coppers, none of which stand a chance of keeping up with him, who's putting more people at risk there I wonder?
15 months (he'll serve half that) is a bit bloody strong, speeding in itself isn't a criminal offence in the UK so the CPS have to jazz it up and call it dangerous driving to get a conviction. How many footballers and celebrities get away with doing similar speeds every year I wonder?
If only they put the effort into catching what I would call a real criminals, like the thief in the OP.

You know what, with all the electrical systems running cars now adays you would think that someone would have figured how to make a peice of equipment that could remotely turn any car off. Heck my JEEP is set up where if you do not have the key and the engine starts it will shut off after 30 seconds because it does not pick up a signal from a chip in the key.

OK he broke the law and should be punished you can argue the severity of the sentence considering this incident in isolation.
However, rapists regularly get let off, burglars don't go to jail. He's actually gone to jail for longer than someone who was actually convicted of dangerous driving and killed a child.
An inconsistent judicial system. /start sig I love old characters that post 'I've beeen playing the game four years' when I know their account has been sold on. /end sig |

No, if a car driver had led 17 police cars and helicopter on a 23 mile, 130mph chase, he would have gone to jail as well.

I know many people who have stolen cars and have gone joy riding and then burnt the car out and left it. When caught they weren't even given probation.
Remember Tony Martin?
WTF???
And do I even need to mention the Guildford Four?

The "McDonalds coffee case" isn't that outrageous. There are probably hundreds of other lawsuits that would better illustrate a problem with the justice system.

didnt you watch batman begins? criminals thrive on the indulgence of societies understanding, alot of us (people who have never been affected by crime) like lawyers and high up people, are so caught up with the rights of the criminal.
we need a society with summary sentences carried out by police :) not american police though, they are robots with no discretion or ability to analyze a situation on its own merit, they apply the written rule to every scenario. ------
