To go father than that, it also says that the end of the calendar merely signifies the end of a cycle. Whether or not the cycle ends with a cataclysm or not, that is a matter of theory.
It'll be interesting to see what happens.
Oh yeah, can I have all of your stuffs? I plan on moving to the mountains and living on bear.

After the nuclear holocaust EVE will be the only way to communicate between Iceland (the one place on Earth to not be bombed besides Norway) and the barren wasteland (everywhere else). Our very survival as a race, rests with this game.
Massive migrations will occur. Hundreds of survivors coming to the 2013 EVE fanfest for refuge, beer, and probably more beer.

I think Gemstone III was one of the first MMORPGs, and it's still around....15 years later or so?
Does EVE have that kind of staying power? Possibly...
50 years? I would hope that we'll all be doing 100% immersive holodecks by then... Maybe 10 years...wouldn't surprise me if the server was still up in 10 years...

Except 50 years ago they didn't have the possibility of runaway global warming that is now being unveiled as a greater threat from the slow decline in global dimming. Do some research. We'll be lucky if we don't have a die-off of a late Devonian level.
All they had to worry about was nuclear winter.

I think fifty is a bit excessive, but I think Eve will be around longer than many other MMOs. Almost definitely ten years. Fifty years is a bit far to predict. Think about how far we've come since 1958 technologically. It very well may be around in fifty years, but unless it's completely rewritten several times, it will probably be woefully out of date.
there we go, we wont have the simple point and click interface, we can have something like the Matrix style gaming, plug ourselves in or something, and fly our ships like that, THAT would be awesome

50 years is hard for me to see. Oil reaching its "half point", globe warming....over population and god only knows what kind of wars and hard times we have ahead. I'm just not sure how its all going to turn out and to be honest I'm a little scared of the thought of having to fight to survive when everything falls apart.
So eve is nice right now.....but I fear its soon going to be the last thing on my mind far below finding food and water and shelter for me and my family
I will be 70 in 50 years time.

Oh, and on the Dec 21st, 2012 Mayan Calander thing....
Dec 21st, 2012 will simply be the Mayan "new year". The Mayans, rather than choosing to use either a solor or luner calander, combined them (and a few other calander details), so one FULL Mayan "year" (the time to get back to the same date from a previous 'year') lasts for centuries.
Also, the Mayans were a tad heavy on mysticism. Sort like having a whole stadium full of stoned Nostradamuses on mystic steriods.
Result?
A lot of calander related mysticism.
I don't worry about it much. Best way to deal with prophecy is to just do the right thing and ignore trying to beat a prophecy (assuming you believe in them...). Even if one believes, one thing that is brutally clear from most prophecy related legends is that folks who try and 'beat' a prophecy tend to fail, almost always BECAUSE of things they did to beat the prophecy. Solution? Don't try and beat it, and the odds of everything turning out ok improve drasticly.

oh, back to the point of the thread....
I seriously doubt Eve will be around in 50 years, but who knows??
If it is, think about the following.....
When I was about 8 years old, mid/early 1970s, I remember encountering "Pong" at an Ice Cream shop.
Thats LESS than 40 years ago.

No
It is unlikely a successor would even be running at that point.
(Dec 21 2012 is the end of the Mayan Long Count, it is the end of an age not the end of the world. The problem is in their calender we don't have enough knowledge left to construct it past that day.)
Thoughts expressed are mine and mine alone. They do not necessarily reflect my alliances thoughts. |

Nah, very much doubt EVE will still be played in 50 years time. All it takes is something new to come out that will knock everyones socks off and people will leap to it in masses dropping everything else behind them. I.e. like COD4 on the consoles, people are still playing that to the point of nausia and likes of UT3 / R6 vegas / even Halo 3 (to a point) was just shelved over night. If EVE is still around in 5 / 10 years time then well done to CCP for it. Obviously it will be a totally different animal to the one we are playing today.

Edited by: sg3s on 13/08/2008 08:58:54 All you experts of the mayan calender... lol...
I Read this nice website a few days ago *Opens history browser and looks at a list of 350 something different websites*, which I am not going to look up for you but it clearly explained the mayan calender and what is to happen in 2012.
2012 Will not be 'the' end of times but the end of 'a' time, a new cycle will begin in the evolution of mankind. A time of aproxamitly 26000 years begins followed by a period of 5200 years or something (my memory isn't great) in this time the world will be different and we will look at things differently (often said to be 'enlightenment'). The mayan calender is made to make cycles, this is merely the start of a new cycle, but also the beginning of a new phase...
The great problem with the mayan language is that many parts of it can be interpreted in different ways, making it hard to do a accurate translation. If you know how asian languages (chinese, japanese, korean etc) sort of work I can give you a simple example: Imagine yourself having to decypher their signs, codes, grammar and punctuation... only you cannot ask a single soul that actually knows anything about the language.
Ofcourse we did in fact take many many years to decypher it, this was pretty much what historians had to do. And we still aren't completely sure if it's correct.
tl;dr The world will not end in 2012
edit: you guys got *uhum* lucky I found it after all, happy reading if you're intersted

Since the year 600's, the world has been prophesised to end every 20-30 years due to something.
year 1000 was the key @End of the world@ date. Of course, 1008 years later we are still here.
There are thousands of callanders and predictions. The real end of the world is scientific, and that is when the sun runs out of hydrogen and blows up, a few billion years from now.
