does this refer to the fact that ever since upgrading my Nvidia drivers, billboards have lost their screens and several minnie stations look more scrapheapy than ever?
if not, uh... fix that too pls

no its the thing where about 60% of the stations in eve have flickery lines where polygons meet which makes them look like they have been produced by amateurs. (esp: gallente stations)
there are loads of threads in the technical section on the subject

1. Open c:\program files\CCP\EVE\cache\prefs.ini 2. Add a line "advancedDevice=1" 3. Reload EVE and login 4. Press ESC to access the video options. 5. Set the zbuffer depth to 24bit.
Note: A. Well, anything higher than 16bit will do. B. If you add the line to the end of the file, make sure to press enter to move the curser to the start of a new line or EVE might not register the line. C. The path assumes youve installed to the default location. D. I dont know if the small "a" in "advancedDevice needs to be small or not. But it works that way for me ;P

Doesnt give you the zbuffer option at all? Or a 24bit z-buffer doesnt fix the flickering?
I went from *lots* of flickering (im sure I could see right through the station sometimes *jk* ;p ) to, well its still not solid, but its much much better.

make sure you put it in exactly like above: advancedDevice=1

Edited by: Quagmire on 03/06/2004 14:05:16 Does anyone else get an effect where the chat/cargo/scanner windows, being set to reasonably transparent, appear to always be in warp? The warping graphics (animated) are shown in the windows whether you're warping or not. It doesn't detract from the gameplay, but it's a bit annoying to say the least.
I think it disappeared for me for a little while after the last patch, but it's back again. -- Security Director, Draconis Industries. |

it does work, in that it presents the options, and allows me to use a 24bit z-thingy...
...but it doesn't work, in that it reduces the flickering by about the same proportion as my security status has increased.... ie: feck all ~~~~)\~~~~~\o/~~~~

Yeah! I hate this thing! I recently got a new HD and had to reinstall EvE; 2 days ago it was all fine and that warp effect wasn't showing, now with fresh install I get that trippy warp effect showing
Another thing, when I open map, and whatever windows I have open with transparency, the "blobs" now display a BOX around the "blob" graphic...
And while I'm at it, the new icons for ships/drones and corpses are f00kin' terrible! (I shouda backed up my eve cache )

Bugger. In that case Id guess that perhaps one of these applies: 1. Your video card simply cannot do more than a 16 bit z-buffer? Which is unlikley unless its a couple of years old. 2. Your display drivers need updating. or 3. Some other setting is suppressing better zbuffer depths. Some video card drivers have a control panel display page that allows the zbuffer bitdepth to be set - overriding any game settings. Perhaps run dxdiag, and/or poke through your display settings to see theres not a 16bit zbuffer set there.
That sucks mightilly. But I cant see CCP being able to fix your problem as, if Shiva "fixes" the issue all theyll do is make the advancedDevice zbuffer option default to 24 - which doesnt help you at all

it is unfortunately very bad, possibly because I play at 1600x1200
graphically my system is reasonably up to date... i have an ati 9700 pro a 22" CRT monster monitor
it does get better if i reduce the resolution, but they i can play because i like to have lots of windows open, and i cant see where i'm going below 1600x1200 ~~~~)\~~~~~\o/~~~~

It's pretty bad. GF4 TI4600 128MB here, you can't tell me that's "old" for the flicker; apparently the new NVidia drivers also break the billboards and semi-transparent stations. That was fixed by rolling back drivers, still waiting for CCP to catch up to current.
I have also read somewhere devbloggish that Shiva is supposed to fix the flicker. I think it even said the problem was identified.

Meowcat:
I also have a 9700 pro and, using the 4.5 catalyst, I no longer have the flickering stations. I'm not at home at the moment, but I'm pretty sure it was fixed with those drivers (or else I've gotten used to it!).

I've seen that effect in a few stations too. It can be caused when the 3D model has more than one polygon occupying the same space. At least that has been my experience from modeling for other games. Hopefully, the fix in this case is just to revist the models for the affected stations, modify the polys and re-export.

I just got that a couple of days ago after switching from my usual windowed mode to full screen mode to take a screenie. I assumed it was just temporary but it came back next time I logged in.

it's tuff to blame the latest nVidia driver issues on EVE when it has problems with so many other games as well. |

Edited by: DeFood on 03/06/2004 19:18:26 Ironically, I run EVE at 1600x1200 on a 20" flatpanel, ATi 9700 Raedon PRO, Catalyst 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 drivers. On Win2K.
None of the drivers fixed the problem, but changing the zbuffer did for me.
(EDIT: When I first installed EVE I was using 4.3, then upgraded to 4.4 and then 4.5 trying to fix the zbuffer glitching)

I've tried all the Z-Buffer settings and while the higher ones do help it's still damn annoying, especially on the Chaos station.
