Simply question, what in eve motives you ?
You got any goals that you think is unusual ?
I suspect isk is the most common motivator for many pilots. But isk is usually a thing you need to achive your goals.

finding dread guristas rat makes me weee...
i am more happy about the fact that i found one than the money i had from it.
i am also very proud to own extreme and rare ships, like a collector's fit kestrel which i once had (t2 rigs, storyline mods, an exemplary kestrel), it's not like the other nano machariel... and the kestrel never left the hangar
sometimes i spend time building complex things, for pure enjoyment

Mainly, fun.
At one point I was highly motivated by the idea of being involved with empire building out in 0.0. This turned out to be more politics than warfare, so I'm not really into that idea now. Maybe someday again.
Right now, I'm enjoying teasing pirates and running the odd mission.
Some point soon, I'm going to get ganked, and end up having to pull the CAP alt out. ;)

EVE got me so exited that I'm working on some special EVE-project atm. Personaly to just see and fly the different space-ships is already great. Can't wait until 'I'm abit older' to check out the more dangerous parts of EVE.
edit: forgot the goals. To collect a few kick-ass nice looking ships. And in the far future to own a POS would be great, but I'm not in a hurry. And lastly to find some nice alliance and get into 0.0

The graphics, and the ever present drive to find the adventure of overwhelming odds, teetering over me and heavily leaning towards crushing my ship into space debris, and coming out on top. Although, a lot of the time, pretending to be the hero of a movie sends me careening into bleak situations where upon I get stomped out, and the credits role.
Lot's of fun though.

Setting long and short term goals and achieving them. Like when I got all attributes to 20 and when I became able to fly a hulk. Plus feeling like my contributions to the corp however little they might be get noticed and appreciated by someone. It's really the people that I can say will keep me in this game in the long run.

trying out different things and seeing how it works out like i've never done exploration so i have an alt that is doing it now figuring out all the little ins and outs of whatever activity - this takes a lot of play time to not just engage in activity but try to be good at it then there's the fun factor of being in a good corp and some satisfaction derived from completing skill levels

The great thing about EVE is that it has many things that keep you going.
I for one enjoy amassing wealth and then splurging on fancy equipment that I'll never actually put to good use on the battlefield.
But I also enjoy the nearly incapacitating adrenaline rush of getting into a fight every so often. I don't know what it is... my hands just shake and I can't handle it! I've only ever won a couple fights.
And of course, being able to interact with other people in such a fantastical environment.

What motivates me in EVE?
Well, frankly not a lot lately.
The game has changed a lot and CCP as a company has changed a lot. Where as before they were nerds who sort of winged it and tried to have fun with their clients/customers, they now probably have a HR department, spirit-killing powerpoint presentations, "vision-meetings", marketing drones and all that crap.
I'm sure what they are trying to do is get the game to a "broader audience", "enhance the brand", "embolden the user" and shit like that.
Realistically, they are killing the game like so many MMO companies before them.
Me, I switched my two chars, from credit card to timecards and if I don't have enough ingame money,I'll just let them lapse.

Fun. ISK is a way to have fun, but ISK does not motivate me.
Fun is:
- Being a squad commander in a larger fleet
- Shooting starbases while defenders are activately defending, and the fight is fair
- Operating starbase defenses, fair fight or not
- Running missions in a gang (agent missions, exploration sites, low level, high level, whathaveyou... if it's in a gang, it's a lot more fun than solo)
What's fun once in a while but is unfun when done too often:
- Grinding for ice or ores (mining, looting missions/ratting)
- Scanning for exploration sites, safespotted players, etc
- Camping stargates
- Setting up and managing research and manufacturing jobs
- Laughing at newbies that die to stupidity (even myself a few times)
- Trying to gank people minding their own business in lowsec
What's not fun:
- Managing your skill training so that you don't miss a beat if you cannot login when your current skill ends
- Grinding for ISK
- Lagging in massive fleet fights
- Crashing to desktop
- Setting up ships
- Hauling items to and fro
- Setting up a proper defendable deathstar
- All market transactions: buying, selling, trading
- Getting cynosural fields in place for common trade routes or relatively safe midpoints
