Edited by: Pot Shot on 18/08/2008 13:01:57 As another point of interest, people could be able to explore certain planetary environments, only small areas like caves and perhaps underwater areas in search of rare minerals. Once an ideal location has been found, drilling equipment could be brought in to mine it. Added dangers might be cave-ins and poisonous gasses. Your ship remains in orbit (invisible to scanners) while you are on the surface.

I wonder how you would get out of your pod while your ship orbits on its own. If they would implement something like that you have to land your ship at least on the surface and then still there is the problem of the equipment to get you out of your pod.

I agree with Ydyp. But I'll go one step further.
This idea is not very well thought out, and frankly, it's based on your lack of knowledge on the background of EvE and pod ships.
Why do you think we can't walk on stations, let alone on planets? We're pod pilots. We have been born and bred to be pod pilots. We belong in space. Sure, we could go walk in stations and go planetside, in theory, but why would we? Our needs as pod pilots are catered to whenever we're in space.
Pod pilots in space are like fish in water. You don't take fish out of water. Period.
This idea is really ******ed. |

though its interesting I can't stand mining in space, let alone landing to mine.
However there are some things to consider,
If you die, how do you get cloned? While your in your pod, if you die the pod emails your brain scan to the cloning facility, its in the backstory but I don't care to look it up.
Should you be allowed to make and earn profit by extracting mat from moons/planets? TBH I don't think this game needs more mats, and I think profit earning outside of your pod should be very limited. Say to the shops, and stuff in stations, player ran bars, and brothels, etc.
I'm not saying no to this, because the carebear in someone might like this, but add the risk back into it, real risk, the ship sits in orbit, completely detectable, and guess what I just stole it and now your stuck planet side, guess you will just have to suicide to get back into space... |

"Pod pilots in space are like fish in water. You don't take fish out of water. Period."
I do!
And it wouldnt be a bad idea other then the fact, as stated earlier, we are simply pod pilots now maybe implementing a new clone or something is another story

Don't use the back story to shoot down an idea - it's easier to change the back story (about how we're all stuck in the pod) than to change any other part of the game. :)
I think you could easily "dock" at a planet and then explore on foot, just land at a spaceport! Then walk around to your hearts content, while the planetary security (similar to CONCORD and whoever protects NPC space stations...your ship might get jacked if you're waaay out in 0.0 on a planet, however, so leave your corpmates as guards!)...
Anyways, the obvious reason for the "pod" story is to "explain" why we're stuck in our ships. Now that we're no longer going to be stuck in our ships, it's time for the pod story to go! |

i'm ok for any ambulation idea as long as it doesn't change eve into some "WoW In Space" game.
Just keep ambulation as an optional eyecandy |

First the back story he gave was not entirely accurate as anyone can become a pod pilot Tho it is very expensive to become one. The Only issue at the moment with this would be The fact that once pod pilots are hooked up to their pods the locked in because of the huge chance of ending up in a wet grave (If you don't know what that is go look it up).
And no one could not keep trying to leave their pod and cloning themselves (go read how pods work) until they did not end up in a wet grave.
Now I'm gonna make a wild assumption but the fact that pod pilots will be able to get out of their pods with ambulation lends me to believe that there will be some new leap in technology to allow us to do just that.
Some stuff to think about - Minerals already are setup from highsec to 0.0 to create a level of rarity and to increase there value (if you could find arknor on any planet why go to 0.0 and everyone could get it).
Eve is a game of internet spaceships this might sound harsh but it you want to take a pick axe run around a planet and mine ore deposits go play wow. |

How about instead of space ships we have land-based mechs or tanks?
Or even multi-role vehicles...like spaceships that had wheels so they could land and roll around (or even hover close to the ground and function inside an atmosphere)!
It seems like it would be horribly inefficient to explore a cave using your fleshy pink body...it's vulnerable and weak, and can't mine at all compared to a good mining vehicle...
Then again, I could see why in the future we might want to step out of the vehicle and walk around...especially if we were "safe" and among friends...heh...I could think of a few other things we would probably want to do in the future too! (Unless cloning totally replaces...that...) |

Again i go back to the point that were playing a game of internet spaceships the last thing we need is for everyone to pile onto one planet so that they can play Mech warrior.
Now In the future we may see planetary mining and exploration. Mining would be something like a moon miner and would come in the form of a mining satellite or a modual placed on a outpost. Exploration is a long shot but if it were to come id see it as scanning a planet getting a random signature (or not) on the planet. One would then land and use a detachable planetary vehicle of some sort to locate the signature on the planet. (the only thing i can see this giving is faction loot salvage stuff you would expect from a crash site or ancient colony... ect. |

Any idea that involves planetary ambulation would require the planetary ambulation to happen on a separate server from the main EvE Tranquility server.
Keep that in mind when you're thinking about transitioning from your pod ship to your pod to outside your pod on the surface of a planet or moon. There will be a transitory phase between space EvE (Tranquility) and planet EvE (Earthgularity?) |
