This topic seems to have fallen by the wayside (or at least EVE Search didn't uncover anything recent), so I think it's time to call attention to it again.
Currently, in order for anyone outside of the POS-owning Corp to use a Jump Bridge, they must have the POS password for the tower that the Jump Bridge is anchored at. This creates a serious security risk, as even the best alliances have spies, and this password must be made public to all alliance members to allow them usage of the POS.
On the other hand, if the POS is set to allow alliance members, any pilot from the alliance may enter the POS force field without needing the password. Friendly pilots not in the same alliance cannot enter the force field without having the POS password though. In this case you have a choice of whether you wish to share the password and take that risk. With Jump Bridges, we don't have that option. The mechanics force us to give out that password.
In my opinion, Jump Bridge access permissions should behave identical to POS force fields. If you are in the same corp or alliance, access should be controlled by the appropriate checkboxes on the POS management interface. The password should only be required when a pilot outside of the corp or alliance needs to use the bridge.
To counter the argument of "you should never be completely safe anywhere" that I know will follow - you're not safe when you use a Jump Bridge. You must be outside of the POS shield at each end of the Jump Bridge, meaning you are vulnerable to attack already. You have the protection of whatever guns the POS is armed with, but that is the same for any POS. -----------------------------------------

You are correct that these measures limit the risk associated with the password being leaked. However, the point is that the mechanic is poorly implemented. We shouldn't have to give out that password, period, unless we choose to. The way it is currently implemented we are forced to share the password with hundreds of players for no apparent reason. Jump Bridges are intended to be an alliance asset and their usage should be configurable in the same way that the POS is. |
