I just looked again at the stats of the Hawk assault frig, now that I've started training for it, and it seems fairly tough. Same DPS potential as the Kestrel, more or less, but with the tankiness of a Merlin (and probably actually tankier than a Merlin).
How reasonable is it to use it for level 1 missions? What about level 2s?
I'm perfectly willing to throw tech 1 rigs at the Hawk to make it even more kickass. In that case, what rigs should I look into?
My goal is to just blaze through level 1 and 2 combat missions, without salvaging (any new player wants to salvage on my missions, post in this thread - do not EVEmail me directly).

The Hawk will obliterate anything L1 and L2 missions can throw at you. It can even survive some L3s, though it takes a really long time to complete them.
As for rigs, I don't know for sure but it should be able to fit damage rigs.

Using a hawk for level 1s is major overkill, for level 2s its easy, for level 3s its a challenge.

Have a t1 frig handy if you do level 1s... I was about to do some level for a faction where I couldn't access any higher, so I grabbed an Ishkur and headed off. First two missions were no problem, and I'm sure the third would have been the same if it hadn't been for the fact that the gate didn't allow assault frigs through..
But other than that, level 1 and 2 shouldn't be a problem. I'm sure they would even survive well in a few level 4 missions thanks to radius/speed helping the tank... but in that case outgoing dps would be an issue...

hawk+dg invul, gist btype SB,gist b type AB CC rig and a shield rig (can't remember.)
decent light missile skills and you can do level3s no problem.
sometimes i swap out to a spec hardener setup.
the main problem i get is webs, you gotta know which rats web you burn them down quick.
its the more fun way of doing l3s.
i cannot wait for CCP to get around to buffing AF's they will be all i will fly when they do finally do it.
Sac is the damn quick way, t2 HAMs+good Skills with a amazing t2 tank and a very expensive AB to get around quicker.

Heh and you now have close to a half billion isk level 1/2 mission running ship.
edit: Thought I should contribute to the thread.
Hawk is an excellent ship for 1's and 2's but can be a little overkill. And the thought that a merlin has a comparable tank to a hawk gave me a little chuckle, thanks for that.

would rather use a harpy for the instant rail damage.
hawk should do a fine job though.

I use both.
With the Harpy you get a bigger punch at the expense of a more high- maintenance gunnery envelope, more frequent ammo runs and for some reason a much, much smaller cargo bay -- if you think you'll have to run couriers at all in a Harpy, bring cargo expanders. *edit* Also, depending on where you are and what ammos you like for rails ammo can get difficult to find.
Which ship I take on a grind basically depends on what I'm in the mood for, they can both be a lot more fun than a cruiser -- and yes, OP, they'll both handle L2s fine with T2 or best- named fittings.

I use my hawk to tank level 4s.
2 Gistii B type small shield boosters Gistii B type afterburner Caldari Navy Magnetic Scattering amp
2 CCC rigs, don't use anti em screens as that ruins your sig radius.
Fly in, get aggro, eject a can orbit with afterburner running and one shield booster on. It works a treat, if you take a bit more damage then expected, just ration the second SB. You can pretty safely tank all level 4s with this and go afk. Once you're orbiting with aggro get your corpies to warp in with the dps. I only have assault ships level 3 and it works fine, with 2 more levels of that I'd get an even better shield boost.
