No Madden 09 for the PC. EA says its because of pirates. Fewer and fewer good titles on the shelves or in the works. I've been fighting it but I think now is a good time to buy a console. Xbox or PS3? Which one's the best?

I haven't noticed a lack of good computer games.
Seriously, how is Madden 09 not coming to the PC a sign of it's death as a gaming platform?

You must be taking the ****.
C'mon! Madden, really? Have you actually bought Madden for the PC? I didn't know EA even had a PC port of it.
Consoles are teh suck, I'd rather tinker with my PC and replace parts every couple years than deal with "customer support" if my console died.
Yes, there are pirates. No, PC gaming is not dead. The market is slowly making a shift to direct distribution systems aka Stardock's Impulse, Steam, or whatever next one is on the horizon.
Apologies that I couldn't actually answer your question.

I would have to say that I would go with the PS3 this time around. Went X-Box originally. The PS3 is rigged for blue ray DVD where as X-box, with their alacarte format, only offers the HD-DVD and no current news of them getting access to the rights for Blue Ray at this point. HD is pretty much screwed and Blue Ray is top of the market and will probably be there for a good while.
Outside of that, Playstation tends to impress me with the amount of games that they put out for the PS2. I doubt that will be any different this time around. They are slow going for the games, but that problem seems to be haunting both sides.
Most of this is info I have compiled by talking with friends and very little evidence for the claims. I am at least confident to say that if I went out, after work, and was to buy one it would be the PS3. For whatever that is worth I hope it helps.

TBH, Computers are going to be the end all be all as they get incorporated into the average household. The big appliance companies (GE whirlpool, LG etc...) are developing appliances that can talk on a network so your computer can receive diagnostic codes when the washing machine breaks and you can shut off your ho****er heater at scheduled times of the day as well as heating and a/c and you will be able to adjust the temperature of your refrigerator and manage your cable t.v. channels. Once alot of this comes to market, the console will just be an extension/addon of your computer.
edit haha I love this filter.
It astrisks t.w.a.t. in hot.w.a.t.er only to reveal "ho" in front _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. You have'll have to find some alternative means to do Your Thing, dude. |

Edited by: TradeOrDie on 22/08/2008 23:21:14 The whole notion of death of PC and Rise of Console is a silly one really. Consoles make it easier for just about anyone to play them, while a PC take a bit more sophistication to use. But they're both computers.
There's no real reason an xbox can't support a mouse and a keyboard, have a browser and some chat clients in it you know.
The true story is the rise of true home entertainment centers.
Edit: Also someone mentioned he'd get a ps3 for blu-ray....in my opinion the battle between hddvd and blu-ray was a moot point, discs are going to lose to on demand movies anyway. Why do I want a disc when I can just stream a movie.

Ever wonder why the people blaming pirates never tell us how they calculated how much they are losing to piracy. Probably because they just picked a number that suited their purpose.
Just like how they say they are introducing DRM to counter pirates without showing why they think the DRM will actually slow the pirates down. Especially when the DRM punished the paying customer with things like killing the game after 3 installs.
It's gotten to the point where everyone I know cracks their legally purchased software because the cracked version has better functionality than the DRM crippled copy they paid for.
PC gaming will be around for a while simply because people will by a PC for non-gaming purposes then buy games for it, while most people will only buy a console if they want it for gaming.

Since the dawn of game piracy people have said the PC is dying as a platform. Just like since EVE has launched people have said it's dying, and we know how that goes.
Personally I have a 360 and a PC, and bought games for the 360 that I wouldn't have bought for the PC (Oblivion, Mass Effect) simply because my old machine couldn't run them.

the most likely death of the PC will not be consoles, but will be the mobile phone, and certainly not EA not releasing another rehashed piece of tat.
and before you dismiss that thought, here's some stats: at current rate of growth, there will be more mobile phones active than humans on the planet. Current phones (iphone, etc) are running GPS systems with 3d rendering with computational power less than 10 years behind a top-end PC. in short, Crysis on a phone by 2018 is'nt out of the question. Add in an interface to allow better vision than the current screens, and you've got a permanantly online pocket-size PC, in virtually every single person's pocket.
It might sound utterly unlikely, but it's being given considerable study by a lot of the prime movers in the games industry.
I doubt it will pan out as a nice clean-cut transition by a long way, and the PC will remain as a market for a long time to come, but it's no longer the first target point of sale for the "dedicated gamer" market.
as for the xbox/ps3 argument, then the answer is neither. that's like saying "squares or circles, what's better" all three of the current generation of consoles have their strengths. what you should be asking is "what back catalogue of games does each have, and have lined up for release, that I would like to buy?" and decide from there.

There's pirates for consoles too. Search for "mod chips" on your console of choice, and pirate away...
Ironically, most of the better PC games can't be pirated. EVE Online is a good example - AFAIK, there doesn't exist a pirated version. You have to pay $20 per month (or 200m isk) to play...there's no way around it!
In fact, it's a _lot_ easier to pirate console games than multiplayer PC games...even non-multiplayer games can be pretty pirate resistant, if they use XP-like activation.

So games consoles are going to die as well if that logic follows through. Same goes for DVD films, Music CD's and various other pirateable things.
Just as many console titles are pirated as PC titles. Just go to any Torrent site and see how many PS3, Wii and XB360 games you find for download.
Piracy has been a problem since the first home computer game hit the market. It has never slowed the market for all formats including PC. In fact, PC has more titles than most consoles due to the versatility of the home computer and it's ability to upgrade relatively cheaply to add substantially more power.
EA has always attributed piracy to their unwillingness to recompile a game to PC format. There are many games they didn't publish in this format to begin with but soon after the console version of the game hit the budget labels, amazingly, the full priced PC version appeared

I want EA's "premium" stuff like Spore, Crysis Warhead, Tiberium, Battlefield etc. etc.
I don't care/want/like EA sports rubbish.
Hardly a sign of the death of PC Gaming. More like a victory.

PC Gaming? Ending?
Lets see:
-GTA 4. They said it'll never go onto the PC. Now it is this coming November. -Spore. Nuff said.
Right off the top of my sleepy head. I seriously doubt PC gaming is dying. -

Roster update 09, like the games and the man whose name is on them, are terrible wastes of money and horrible games. The monopoly Madden has on proper football licensing allows him/EA to release a game that would collect dust on shelves if it had any real competition and wasn't market *****d like the iPod.
The best thing that could possibly happen to EA would be a nice crippling loss, followed by them selling the IPs they've absorbed, to smaller companies willing to make a good game and not just yet another mold.
That said, I would love to see CCP make a Syndicate-based game.

Care to back this up ?
I have a friend who has his legally bought copy of Mass Effect cracked because he didn't like the DRM, and its a game with XP-like activation.
So go on, name me one popular game that has been out for over two weeks, doesn't have a significant online component, and isn't easy for me to get a cracked copy of.
