Regarding the matter of ambulation, it will vastly increase the size of the client. Since it's already 1Gb in size if you have the premium graphics, will the ambulation be a seperate download with an option to add it to the game or will we be forced to download a 2Gb+ file?
I'd prefer to see ambulation added as an optional upgrade rather than have it forced on us. Having the ability to wander around a station has little appeal to some players and it would be good PR to allow them to opt out. An additonal download module wouldn't be difficult since it would have a different engine etc. Integration into the game is about as easy as opting to have premium or classic graphics. No doubt it would have to call out to a seperate executable file so having a toggle to tell the calling routine if it is installed or not wouldn't be too difficult.

Many, many times.
It's not like you're suddenly going to have to get out of your ship and walk for 10 minutes to get to the medical bay to upgrade your clone or something. None of that is changing.

Separate executable file ftl. Most games today are 2gb or larger, so adding ambulation to the current Eve client download isn't going to hurt that bad. I mean, people will have to wait a bit longer for the thing to finish downloading which may be a problem on unstable connections, but overall I'd prefer that the ambulation feature be fully integrated into the main Eve client.
Interesting topic of conversation though.

Premium is fully integrated, yet actually downloading it is optional. Surely something similar could be done for ambulation, even if it does need a separate engine.
And yes, it has been said since day one that it will be completely optional. -

Ooh, that brings up a subject I've been wondering about for a bit. What are the system requirements for ambulation? Have those been published anywhere?

It will be optional.
Not a debatable issue: it will be optional. (well, stupid people might debate it.....)
However....
I've no doubt that over time, there will be some desirable content added that will require ambulation. And when I say "desirable", I mean "has an effect (direct or indirect) on you ship vs ship pvp power". I doubt we'll see this in the 1st year of ambulation, but it will probably show up eventually. As to the form it will take, your guess is as good as mine.

I think, as was said earlier, the post refers to the client portion, not whether or not you have to walk about. We know the walking bit will be optional, but I have to admit a bit of curiousity as to whether it will pile into the client or be a seperate download like the silly graphics I'll never use nor want.
Making the graphics download thing optional was one of the smarter things they'd done in a while. Hopefully they handle ambulation content the same way. ------- CEO of Maids. No I didn't pick the name. I've grown rather fond of it though.

Consider that a LOT of people have ISPs with monthly max transfered rate, sometimes as low as 20 GB and you can see why downloading 2 GB you won't use is a bad idea. ------------------------------------------------- If brute force doesn't solve your problem... you are not using enough

2gb for a game isn't that big ya know, SupCom is 10gb. Also if it was a forced download, you wouldn't be downloading a 2gb+ file, since you already have the client as it is before hand, the ambulation patch would probs be around 200-300mb. ----------------------------

question: will the classic client be able to ambulate? i ask because i have a fairly high end computer but i still get better fps when i dual client two classics over two preimums. perhaps its because i like my premium client to look so pretty. anyway, can you ambulate from the classic client? - Mission running: not as exciting as smashing your hand with a hammer, but more painful. |

Very unlikely, what little videos I've seen seem to point out the ambulation engine will rely heavily on DX9 effects, so it may use part of the Premium engine's code.
Ambulation aside, you should have roughly the same FPS with Classic and Premium if you make sure to disable HDR and shadows.

Seems like a lot of work for content you have no reason to download.
Now I don't know how much it cost for the guys who programmed this, and I'm not trying to do apples and oranges, but I'd be oh so much happier if they took the money it took to code ambulation in man hours and instead put more people to work to fixing the god awful server net code which makes this game a slideshow at best in the gigantic 0.0 wars ccp created.
Yes they created it by their game design. Sovereignty, titans, cynojammers, jump bridges, etc all make blobbing more and more important.
But great, you guys can work an a /dance emote.

Everyone knows that ambulation as far as actually partipating in it is optional but has anyone from CCP actually stated the new files needed for it to work will be optional.
Seeing as premium client is optional I assume it would be but still, cant hurt to get an offical answer -----------------

thanks ill do this. stations are the biggest hit, as well as being in warp with one of the characters. also for a brief second jumping hurts(clearly the system being loaded) opening up the star map helps with the lag created by a client sitting in a station though.
i shall turn hdr and shadows off though. i wish i had a supar mega computer instead of a supar computer. - The ISK must flow.. |

The very idea of forced ambulation makes me chuckle --- I see fail everywhere, and it's like they don't even know they're failing ---
