I was just reading a few older Capital ship complaint/recomendation posts and had an idea and thought I would share it to see if it get shot full of holes.
Problem: CCP wants to return capital ships to Fleet warfare. Players still want to be survivable when caught solo.
Possible solution: Make capital ship specialties dependent and boosted by leadership role and skills.
Example : Carrier Default: carrier with lvl 4 skills. 13 fighters deployed and bonuses to damage Problem : OMGWTFLAG, Fighters too easy to destroy and neuter carrier ship, too easy to damp into uselessness. Solution: change a few skills and bonuses 1. Advanced Drone interfacing, replace extra fighters with damage boost and resistance ( keeping carrier default number bonus) 2. remove fighter damage bonus per level and replace with leadership role bonus. (ie. squad leader, 5% damage bonus, wing commander 10% bonus, fleet commander 15% bonus. Must be able to receive fleet booster bonuses, ie. just sitting in the role doesn't work. must have sills to be in role and have appropriate levels underneath) (possible making this dependent on the number of each level. 2 squad members 1% bonus, 10 squad members 5%, 1 wing 6%, 5 wings 10%, etc)
the same can be done for DDD damage and siege mode damage bonus and fuel needs.
This will encourage organized fleets and fleet skills, also reducing the number of capital ships in a fleet.
I know this isn't perfect, and would be difficult to implement. It is intended to induce discussion and make everyone think.

I like it, especially if the pre-req for this was Battlecruiser V / Command Ship IV instead of Battleship V. Gives the Fleet Command Ship pilots a step to take after they finish their command ship training. |

Maybe instead of creating a Capital sized command ship, they could create a class of ship inbetween Battleships and Caps. Corvettes! This class could be used as in introductary ship for cyno jumping, and be "Capitol Support" vessels.
These ships could not only jump to cyno's, but they could use standard jump gates.
These ships would be used alot in fleet/large gang warfare providing anti-BS weaponry using Capital class weapon systems but not having a seige engine.

My idea was to give them MORE of a command role and less of a solo role. So make the capital ships what they are supposed to be, the fleet leaders. They are the pinnacle of the ship skill tree, let them fill that role. Make it so that you need to have support ships without totally killing what they can do when solo. Make it so fleets WANT those ships in the command and control area. Titans already have one form of this with a fleet bonus, lets expand on this for the entire Capital line.
