Why did it get such good press, i just watched it and it sucked.
I warn you now do not watch this movie it has no plot (if you love this movie feel free to defend it, but please someone tell me why it gets 8/10 from pretty much everyone)

Its not a movie it has no story.
Man gets stuck in room, 1 hour of cool effects, man kills room.
Why is it amazing.

I've learned long ago that certain people hold really, really high expections for movies which tends to lead to great dissapointment so now I generally take criticism with a grain of salt.
Having said that I haven't seen the movie, much less completely forgotten about it until this thread was mentioned, but the preview looks inviting. May have to catch it.

I liked this movie quite a bit. A lot better than your average horror flick.

The movie is awful if the only thing you value is storytelling. It's a horror movie though, (or at least tries to be) and as you know those tend to have crappy/non-existant stories these days.

That would be on the movie end when they preview all these great scenes and showcase it over and over until all you can think about is this movie then when you finally see it you realize all the good scenes were in that commercial. Thus the let down is blatantly obvious.
On the customer end I would say inflated expectations and/or standards. Every customer has a different opinion of how a movie should be so the quality of the movie varies from customer to customer. Now while critique of a movie is fully welcomed there tends to be a select group of customers who's movie standards are so high that no matter what they see they are never satisfied because they were simply expecting just that little bit more. Essnentially what I'm trying to get at is that when they walk in they're not planning on sitting back and enjoying the video but rather planning to nitpick every little scene to death.

The movie sort of reminded me of the EVE forums. Everything that happened in that movie happens here.

The only good thing about the movie is the two different endings.
had a liong and heated debate about how the movie actually ended with my brother, only to find out that we had seen different ones, both where right.

Above average? Sure. Not much beyond that.
SPOILOR ALERT!
The mind**** section in the middle, when he thought he got out, was so blantantly obvious that it made me shiver. 
Special effects, questions of whats real and a spookscene every now and then. That pretty much sums up the movie. When he entered the room I really liked the atmoshpere of "Is something really happening?".
Like the scene when he goes to straighten out that painting and at the background, in the reflection on the door, you can see something moving; that was the BEST scene of the movie. It was still all anticipation and waiting, something I'd like to see more from horror films, instead of all the dull running away from scary knifemen (with masks).

Summary:
Go watch it if you like horror films, if you don't especially em, feel free to skip it; nothing of value will be lost.

I didnt think much of the film, it wasn't bad but wasn't great in my view.
I had to ask my gf if the ending was any good as I fell asleep about 5 minutes from the end, she said the end had a good twist and thoroughly enjoyed the film, so like anything else, it appeals to some and not others.
