By no means a be-all end-all guide, it won't work for everyone! I've just pulled together a bunch of different methods of getting EVE working under Wine and found that, combined, they're effective.
ZIP Download (EVE-Files)
This guide is certified to be newbie-friendly. ------------------

Use this uber guide with my guide and Wine should run like a dream for anything from EVE to Garrys Mod. ------------------

Edited by: Multimorph on 05/09/2008 12:51:47 I set up my wine according to your guide which was pretty easy! Thanks so far for the description :)
But unfortunately the "install EVE by clicking on it" part does not work!
If i select "browse drive_c" in the WINE menu and doubleclick on the EVE installer (EVE classic 61817), it says "veryfing installer", counts up to 100% and then gives an error message "Unable to elevate, error2" and stops.
I than tried to start the installer from a shell with "sudo wine EVE_Classic_Setup_61817.exe". Again it counts up to 100% and then says "This installer requires admin access, try again". I entered the right password for sudo, so this is not the problem.
My OS is Ubuntu 7.04, not 8.04. But this shouldnt cause it, should it?
Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Try setting wine to pretend to be windows 98. (applications > wine > configure wine, windows version)

Thanks, mate! This at least let me install eve.
Unfortunately, it does not run yet. If i start it using "wine eve", the splash screen shows and after a while the program is terminated, doing nothing. Any more ideas anyone?

Run the command below and it will open a Wine version of regedit.
regedit
Now browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Software / Wine / Direct3D folder.
If the Direct3D key folder does not exist then you can create it yourself:
* 1. Right-click on the Wine folder icon. * 2. Select New > Key from the pop-up menu. * 3. Name the new 'folder' key "Direct3D" without the quotes.
Once you find or create the Direct3D key you can set the video memory size:
* 1. Select the Direct3D key folder icon. * 2. Right-click the mouse in the pane to the right to open the right-click menu. * 3. Use the right-click menu command New > String Value to create the following key pair:
VideoMemorySize 256
(I got that from the UESP wiki, and edited it alittle, if anyone cares about the source)
