Always interesting to see these kinds of eve is dying threads pop up, as if it gives more power to the op's argument, in the hope of changing ccp's mind about something, which of course is very unlikely.

Edited by: Glengrant on 27/08/2008 18:53:42 I'm tired of hearing about Infinity. Until it's actually out it only promises lots of cool stuff - and promises are cheap - it's the implementation that counts in the end.
Procedurally generated systems - could be cool - could be total failure- we'll see.
Millions of worlds of which 99% will never be generated, explored or whatever is mostly irrelevant.
No skills - we'll see if people will really like that.
Twitchy combat - he he - I already see the threads whining about how nobody can compete with the 14 year olds.
The background plot and ideas are nothing much to write home about and the naming is downright terrible. (ok - matter of taste).
If the graphics on the site are representative then the modeling and graphics are also just so so (again a matter of taste).
I have nothing against Infinity succeeding and being a wonderful game. But claiming that it is better than Eve is way too early.
If anybody is annoyed with lag in Eve wait what you'll get with Infinities features like precedural planet generation (saves content space and uses extra CPU power) and seamless flight.
From FAQ:
Quote: It will be very fast to jump to a local system, but jumping to the other side of the galaxy will take from minutes to hours (in real time
Again I see the threadnoughts already. :-)
Also, no ambulation.
So if it finally comes out it's quite likely much worse looking than Eve on a big map with sily names where people might hardly ever meet and where you have to be rescued by somebody else after your ship gets destroyed (how long can that take?). There won't be a working player run economy at first and 20 ships will probably lag like 200 in Eve, while combat is dominated by teenagers with lots of time and unbeatable hand-eye reflexes. Couldn't find anything about whether it's sharded or not.
By then Eve has Ambulation and whatnot.
There might well be a better sciFi game out one day - it might even be successfull enough - but it's name is unlikely to be Infinity. People read the feature list, believe it all and seem to have no idea what can go wrong there.

Glengrant, both games are different, target different audiences. Infinity indeed is more niche than EvE. Its supposed to be like EvE but with significant different features: combat, physics, travelling, amongst others. I think more people who play space sims will be playing it that average eve players. there will be place for people who likes to play the market/industry too anyway...
To understand the vision with Infinity one has to follows its development and what the dev wants to accomplish. People comparing both games don't know what is talking about anyway. I share some of your concerns, but I've confidence in the devs actually, but who knows...
Apart of that... the graphic engine... well I can't compare with Trinity I lack data, and Trinity upgrade hasn't been finished, so we will be able to compare when EvE has better moons/planets i.e. The quality of models/textures for infinity are very random, from excellent to very low, that's because it's based on contributions, and nothing is representative to what will be going in the 'final' game. I can say that the best ships are much better than eve's best ships (but most of them are unfinished) and the worse are much worse, well you could see that coming.
The major diference is combat, we will see how that turns out, but CS has millions of players online everynight, more than WoW (is not pay-2-play through), so...
Right now there is no direct competition for EvE audience IMO, and those who may be a thread are away by a couple of years at least, and I'm not even sure they are remotelly similar (twitch combat).
Also if the 'doom is coming' people is wrong, EvE will have more features in a couple of years, even if CCP is subpar on how fast they implement things.

Thousands will jump ship from Eve to play in a game they can excel at.

Theres a new MMO that's hitting beta "soon" called Black Prophecy.
It'll be a direct competitor to EVE.
I have a feeling the quarter it releases we'll see a massive dip in players online.

While I disagree that EvE is dieing,
This will kill it eventually. If it a: gets finished b: delivers on half its promises.
For the uninitiated it will have everything (hopefully) your wildest space MMO dreams can imagine and that can never happen in EvE.
1. Realtime seamless surface to orbit transitions 2. Proper asteriod belts and planetary rings 3. Nebulae 4. Massive procedurally generated universe 5. City building/ownership 6. Planet ownership 7. Twitch fighter combat all the way up to more eve like capital ships. 8. Minimum of stupid timesinks

Dont be silly, of course not. Thats just a list of some of its impressive planned features which as I said are features that have been talked about on these forums for adding into eve but will never happen. Many of which are well past proof of concept and into prototype. There is obviously much more to the game than that.

EVE has indeed become dull ... boring .. repetative .. but it's better than most other MMO's still ..
But the gap is closing ... and why? Becuase they are trying to close the gap .. Ironic isn't it
Still I don't have the guts to EMO Quit just yet.

Yeah, I'm going to go with Outside too. The star in this system is kinda bright, and the physics engine is a little different, oh, and collisions cause damage. Other than that, you'll adjust fairly well.

IMHO, the problem with games like Eve that reward people a lot for seniority (the SP system, T2 BPO system, player controlled space, etc) is that when a new space oriented MMO comes out the first instinct for everyone who hasn't invested a ton of time & resources into Eve will be to flock to that MMO - to be the first people in. They'll start out by playing both and unless the new one is total crap they'll cancel their Eve subscription. That will start a slippery slide in player numbers until eventually most of Eve will be a ghost town - like Everquest and such are now.

I doubt it will ever get finished, and even if it does it doesnt seem like they have thought much about gameplay. EVE needs more competition but atm it doesnt really look like they will get any in the near future. Vote against the nano nerf! |

Fallout 3 will probably hinder my scalavanting ways, but only two games would make me tihnk about pausing my subscription to EVE(not quitting):
EVE system based(fitting etc all) Mechwarrior/Battletech MMO.
And Starcontrol MMO.
My opinions represent the opinions of my corporation completely. I'm the CEO damnit. |
