Edited by: Renier Gaden on 28/08/2008 14:41:45 After running several fairly easy missions for a combat agent I got a mission this morning which I think is more than I can handle. Within 40 seconds of going through the Acceleration Gate I start to take structure damage. I just made it into warp with only a few ticks of structure left on the first attempt (my ship was on fire an was trailing a lot of smoke). On my second attempt I did not make it to warp in time. I did not manage to do more than a tick or two of armour damage to one of the ships attacking me.
If I drop this mission, will the agent still talk to me? I know it would drop my standing with him, but would the 4 or 5 missions I had already done for him have raised my standings enough to get away with quitting one mission?
I recently bought 8 or 9 skill books in gunnery, missiles, and some shield related stuff, so I expect to perform better after a few more days of training, but I donĘt think I will be ready in time for this mission. The missions expire after 24 hours right?

I expect that the agent will still talk to you. Only if your standings were already boarder-line would declining one mission cut you off from that agent, and even then running a few missions for agents in that same corp should patch that up quickly.
If the mission is part of a multi-mission chain (ie the title of the mission contains X of Y) declining/failing that mission will break the chain such that you will not be offered the remaining missions in that set. Depends on the mission, many will allow up to a week to complete the mission. Check your journal for the time that the mission will expire.
Again there is a special note about multi-mission chains: you must complete the entire chain within one week of the first mission or the remaining missions in the chain will not be offered.
If you tell us which mission is giving you trouble we might be able to offer some advice on stratagies and tactics that will help you get through. Similarly telling us a bit about the ship and modules you are using might allow us to offer additional advice.

Edited by: Renier Gaden on 28/08/2008 15:16:59 I donĘt remember the name of the mission, and am not able to check right now. It involved two groups of pirates fighting with each other and an Interbus ship getting caught in the middle and being disabled. I was to find the disabled ship and rescue the crew.
I was flying a Merlin with 2 rocket launchers (foxfire rockets), 1 Scout rail gun (Plutonium rounds I think?), a shield hardener, a shield expender, battery, afterburner, nano regenerative armour, and some sort of repair device. I really should have upgraded my insurance when I put all that stuff on.
Now I am flying a pod..... although I have a buy order out for anther Merlin, and I have an Executioner with some lasers on it out in 0.1 sec about 26 jumps away.
I suspect that a large part of my problem is that I started in the Industrial school, so my combat skills are lacking. I was working on navigation skills for a while and have seen improvement there, but am very low on all offensive skills.
Also, the ships that took me down so fast were Merlins and Kestrels firing rockets, so maybe I should equip some explosive shielding next time.

Sounds like worlds collide.
Check out the mission info on this page.
It is not mentioned on that page, but you dont have to fight the ships in the 2nd room, you can run to the next gate and jump. So see if you can boost your kinetic resists (guristas do kinetic damage) in order to tank some more damage to allow you time to get to the next gate. In the 3rd room all you have to do is grab the stuff from the damaged heron and you are done. -=^=-

Renier, it sounds like you are in Caldari space. If so I am on around 7PM EST. Send me a convo and I will be happy to help you with your mission.
Starting industrial makes some of the combat missions tough.

Thanks guys. I will read over those guides you linked.
And Apie, I may well take you up on that. I am on Atlantic time, so I think I am an hour ahead of you.

Renier, feel free to convo me as well and see if I'm online. I'll be happy to fly out and help as well.
It sounds like you need to cover the little details of agent standings mechanics. You can actually turn down one mission every 4 hours without losing any standings at all. If you turn down a second, you will lose standings, but if you've been doing 10-20 missions with him already it probably isnt enough to say you cant talk to him. If you turn down the mission and pick up the next one, your standings will be completely fine.

However that is of little help if you have already accepted the mission and are now finding it too diffucult.

Well we did it - He in a Merlin myself in an Incurses - I used shield maintanence drones on him (3x small tech 1s) and a small shield transfer array. The only difficulty was I had to stay within 4000 meters of him which was a little difficult - we had to warp out once when aggression went wrong and I ended up being targetted but we completed it killing everything in all levels - lots of bounties and salvage/loot to be had :-) --

Yes, behind every invincible pilot is a strong women.... with repair drones and a shield transfer. Ralara certainly made me feel like hot stuff. The difference she made became particularly evident when she had to warp out. She left me with almost full shields, yet within 40 seconds, despite using a shield hardener, I was warping out too with structural damage and trailing smoke and flames back to the nearest station.
Thanks Ralara for the help, and thanks for teaching me so much about fighting in a gang. I was learning as I went, so I did not do my job, such as keeping aggression off of my logistical support, quite as well as I should have. But I think I sort of have the hang of it now, and was able to get some of the baddies off of you at the end.
Apei, thanks for your offer. If I had not already been battling pirates with Ralara at 7:00 pm EST I would certainly of sent you a convo. Same for you Synapse, I really apriciate the offer, and your tip on Agent mechanics was very helpful too.

We've used the same tactic to beat some of the harder Level 4 missions (I think it was Angel Extravaganza, but there is a level 4 Worlds Collide as well) flying ships a lot weaker than recommended. I keep a plain ordinary osprey cruiser with two battleship class shield transfer units and every other slot full of capacitors (and a few shield repair drones) for whenever we come up against a mission we're having trouble with. I call it "Paper Invulnerability" because it has no defences of its own, but it can raise someone else's defences so high they might as well be completely invulnerable (+200 shield hp PER SECOND, perma-running).
Running missions with a mate you can have one focus on offence and one on defence, and get some really spectacular results. I tend to be the defence guy, and I'm getting really good at it.

This mission is so easy if you just speed through the middle ignoring it, especially the left gate. The first time I did it was in an incursus or a tristan with an AB just heading straight for the gate as soon as I got in the left room.

No problem at all - it was a lot of fun and I'm happy to team up with you again if you ever need/want it - that goes for many new players too; if I'm free I'm at your disposal :-)
Regarding the aggression; don't worry about it too much - worlds collide is notorious for being a bit strange with aggression. I've not done the level 1 version for a while but I know the Level 4, on the second stage (the one before the Heron) if 1 person warps in they get aggression from a small pocket of rats - if a second comes in or if the first releases any drones, full stage aggression occurs - the entire stage aggresses the second person / drones - this may have been what happened on the level 1 as I was both a second person and releasing drones at the same time. Live and learn, eh? :-)

Yes we did discuss this beforehand but we both thought it'd be more fun to try to kill everything - that way you can maximise the bounties and loot and due to it's difficult nature it has several hours before the time-bonus doesn't apply, meaning we had enough time to do it. Of course if you're steamrolling for loyalty points or if it's too difficult for a single ship, yes you can avoid about 80% of the entire mission :-) --
