I got in a dispute with the boss today, some smalltalk where I spent some 5 minutes ripping at Star Trek and everyone watching it just as he was about to share that it was his favorite sci-fi series and he was thinking about getting Star Trek Online even.
So to not be a complete ass I thought I should give the series he was going on about a shot, forgot the name though. Which one is it that's set in a not too distant future?
If it indeed sucks I'll go back and give him seconds. |

How many seasons of that is there and which incarnation, if any, are worth a watch? Don't tell me the original series, I've seen all the togas I can stomach! |

On one hand, unless you and your boss are tight griefing something the boss likes is not the straight and narrow route to long term employment.
On the other hand, if he likes Enterprise he deserves it. |

Okay, three suggestions here.
1) Like a lot of sci-fi, never start with a series at the beginning. It usually takes a bit of time for the characters to get into the groove with each other, as well as the plotlines rolling - try looking towards the middle or the end of their run for their better episodes.
2) Enterprise is pretty "meh" compared to the rest of the series, bit like the red-headed stepchild. If you want a solid series to get into, Next Gen is arguably you best bet, or the movies (see point 3).
2) If I was going to pull a random person off the street and introduce them to Trek, I'd sit them down and have them watch Wrath of Khan, maybe Best of Both Worlds from Next Gen or the Dominion War with DS9.
On the whole, its a pretty decent set of series, but like anything, it things that are awesome and things that suck . |

Edited by: goodby4u on 02/09/2008 05:57:30 Edited by: goodby4u on 02/09/2008 05:56:46 Tbh ive never been a fan of any starttrek series, most of the episodes of TNG, voyager, and the classic all end the same way, they work it out diplomatically at the last second and only lose one red shirt stand in in the process.
Enterprise takes an entirely different approach most of the time, but they go too far radical into the"yeah lets not talk, lets blastem"deal... And the fights end too quickly.
DS9 is one of the few startrek series that ive liked, it is very well balanced... However the battles are never as epic as stargate or starwars or most other scifis out there. |

Enterprise. And calling it "not that great" would be the understatement of the century, the show was just painfully bad. Seriously, this was the series that made Voyager look good, a task even the most dedicated fanboy would have believed to be impossible.

I used to love Startrek ...when I was 10
Looking back, I don't really know what I liked it at all. Sooo much better stuff out there, it should have died when the original series ended

Ditto on Voyager and Enterprise. But DS9 was a bit odd for me. I didn't like the premise of the wormhole gods/aliens, and the prophet.
The series started off slow with the whole Macquis storyline which I didn't really care for. It got better when they started to introduce the Dominion and Jem Hadar more. But the ending was kind of weak for my taste since it went back to the whole wormhole alien/prophet thing. Overall the series was decent but the main premise left a bad taste in my mouth.
I'll stick with TNG as my favorite Star Trek series to date. While TNG had it's fair share of crap episodes, I like that lineup more, and I think it had the more iconic and successful episodes.

DS9 had a an ongoing storyline and developed it's characters. The static setting gave them more recurring characters to work with.
TNG stuck more to the "Visit a different wacky planet each week" thing.
Personally of the two I preferred DS9 by a hair as it was a bit darker. TNG was slightly more newagey and early 90s.
If you watch DS9 make sure you watch the whole season because the best ep of the first season is towards the end.
Voyager ... the Doctor and 7of9 made that bearable but only just.
Enterprise looked like it could of had potential but then they went with that whole stupid GWOT direction which just ballsed it up in my opinion. EVE RELATED CONTENT |

Enterprise is ghastly. When you realise that the title music is from the hideous feel good film "Patch Adams" you'll hate it even more.

Edited by: NeoShocker on 03/09/2008 17:18:26 The "not too distant future" must be the Enterprise. I'm still a Star Trek fan.
Saw your other post about considering to watching and how many seasons.. TNG, Voyager, and DS9 have 7 seasons. Star Trek is supposely to run 7 season max.
I didn't watch a single episode of Enterprise, plus I heard its not great at all. There are even technology that contradicts the other ST shows that isn't suppose to be "there" or "invented" yet.
To sum up TNG, DS9, and Voyager.. Btw, about OST, its like TNG, but older tech and stuff. Been so long since I watched it as a kid, so I won't bother summerize, but the theme is similar to TNG. :s
TNG is basically a series of exploration, happenings in Enterprise-D and their crew, encounters with new races, Visiting planets, some diplomatic stuff there and conflicts.. Stuff like that. The best episodes of the series is "Best of Both Worlds" (2 part episodes) which introduces the Borg for the first time :)
DS9 is about the war-torn Cardassian abandoned station and Federation happen to take it. It's theme consist of politics, conflicts, restoration of order between two races, some awesome space battles (best in ST series). No or barely any sorts of "exploration" episodes like TNG. DS9 is at best about the Dominion War.
As for Voyager, the theme is more of survival and trying to get back home to Federation space. Voyager and the crew got themselves so far away in a galaxy are of "delta quadrant" and getting back home takes like, 50 years to get back home. It got Borg, lots of it since Borg lives there. A lot of new races and unknown technology that voyager adapted. But of course they manage to get back home in 7 years I think... Can't think of my favorite episodes, got some. :)
I personally like them all, but if I were to recommend someone to watch.. It might be DS9 for the most part or Voyager. It all depend on your preference. -----------------------------------

I prefer the Next Generation, as it's what I grew up with. Deep Space 9 was incredibly boring when I was younger, and only when I became more of a geek did it start to make sense, to my utter dismay.
Voyager wasn't too bad, though the main reason to watch it was Seven of Nine (aka Borg Babe).
Enterprise was pretty fun, in my opinion.
All in all, though, don't get in an argument with a Trekkie. They are some of the meanest, most belligerent sci-fi fans in existence. Seriously, keep your cool around them, and just let them say what they will, even if it's utter nonsense.
And if they start speaking Klingon, walk away ...

Personally, I thought Undiscovered country was the best Star Trek movie. While I liked Wrath of Khan, I didn't like the whole mind controlling worm thing.
But there's several very good TNG episodes: The Inner Light The Best of Both Worlds (1 & 2) Darmok Chain of Command (1 & 2)
are some of the better next gen episodes.

There's one DS9 episode I absolutely loved (though overall TNG is better). I don't remember the name but it's the one where a small group of federation soldiers along with a few main characters have to hold a small outpost against a giant onslaught of jem'hadar or whatever they're called.
Was a really amazing episode with everyone getting shot in the face all over the place. Very dark for ST actually. -Zyck |
