Why not make cargo scanners instantaneous? Currently pirates say they podkill everything because people carry valuable items in low quality ships (Ibises, shuttles etc) to make the pirates think they are not worth shooting. Personally I think that's junk and the pirates just don't want to admit that they like to kill everything.
So - make cargo scanners instantaneous and not require a target lock. It should still flash up a message like "Grey Area scans your cargo hold" so you know it's being done. That would mean pirates could instantly see the contents of any given hold, and could decide based on the value of the contents whether or not to attack the ship. It would also mean that if you are attacked by a pirate when you have an empty hold, that you know he's NOT a pirate but a psycho (griefer), unless of course you've done something to tick him off.
I can't see any downside to this, can anyone else?

Does that make you feel better as you lose your ship? I don't understand the upside. Either you can defend yourself, or run, or you can't. What use is knowing the motive of your attacker?

The only people this would help are pirates, who want to take the things we worked so hard to get. Bad idea in my opinion.

But currently, they kill you regardless because they don't have time to check your hold. The reason it would be a good thing is;
1. If you travel with your hold empty you'd have less chance of being attacked.
2. Noobs and players carrying cargo of little or no value would have less chance of being attacked.
Currently pirates attack everyone. With this system either they 1. continue to attack everyone, in which case every pirate is just a psycho killer (which I don't think is the ccase) or 2. at least SOME pirates reduce their number of kills and only target the valuable ones.
So it's either no change, or an improvement. Did I explain it better this time?
