Ok, everything I've read on the forums has told me that sentry guns protect people within 75k. So, imagine my shock today when I was ganked a mere 6k from a gate. The sentries did absolutely nothing when my shuttle and pod were destroyed. I petitioned but was told there are a few ways to defeat sentries that are not considered exploits. Why am I always the last one to know about these things? Where is it documented? And how do you play the game when the rules are constantly changing?
Anyway I just had to rant a bit - let the flames commence, or whatever.
(Incidentally m0o must be easily amused - why else would they bother to attack an empty shuttle?) |

Mogster what security space where you in? Gates in .4 have sentry guns that most BS's just can tank fairly easily. Always be wary of m0o they can be . . . interesting

Maybe they were being sensor dampened
Hmmm i should get some frigs and play with those guns maybe i can kill one with lasers in 5 years

ive read a bit about the sentry gun thing on these boards; and while I dont really know enough about it to give specifics (as in what modules, combination of skills, ship, timing of module activation etc), I do know that the savvy pirate can set up just outside the trigger range for the sentry guns (60+ km or so) and fire with impunity on any target they like.
I have heard of counters for this being:
1) a really fast frig (one that breaks the 2km/s barrier so that it can out run missles) 2) sensor boosting the sentry guns 3) using your map to see where the gank fests are happenin. 4) insta-jump bookmarks
and im sure some experienced people could add some more and probably better suggestions. Im just a n00b with nothing better to do than visit the forums and read.
I'm so unlucky that if I was to fall into a barrel of nipples I'd come out sucking my thumb. |

Any battleship pilot with a decent PVP knowlege base knows how to out-tank sentry guns, and concidering now in 0.0 empire space there are only 2 at gates and stations (where there used to be 4) its easier than ever...
Shield Transfers/Sensor Dampeners/Shield Hardeners/Outside of range, all are formidable tactics against a sentry gun imo...

Yes there was, you just didnt see them fire, I believe thats a bug.
..and we kill Shuttles because...
a) even if 1 in 10 shuttles give us something to sell, use, laugh at its worth killing the other 9. b) we can.

Actually there's a bug in play that effects the grpahics of firing sentries.
Atm, only people in short range (like 6km and such) of the sentries, at the moment they start firing will see them fire.
That's probably why you didnt see it, the pirates would be tanking them assaid above _______________________________________________

Yup. Sentry guns, especially in 0.4 and lower are useless. They are good in 0.5 and up as they aid Concord in defense, not mentioning the casual malfunctions (bugs) which make them shoot anything in sight.
It's really simple with a citizen defense. Either they work or they don't, halfway solutions, in this case, only causes more of these posts.

ok wether i get a bann on forums for writing this or not i dont know but their is an explit i have found that allows u to gank around sentries with impunity
it is a bug and it is an exploit i will not say anything else as it will only lead to more hart ache for those who take this game a bit to seriously
wheter or not mOo have discoverd this exploit or not i dont know nor am i saying that they are im just saying it sounds similar to what i have discoverd

I think shield transfering other ships at sentry guns isn't considered an exploit. However shield transfering other ships against concord is.
0.5 systems are supposed to be safish, below 0.5 arnt supposed to be safe.
Beware to travellers near to gonditsa, TFA are doing the same there.

Hmm. Like I said - easily amused.
As for the rest - how can people be expected to avoid it? So the sentry guns are bugged, but abusing that bug is not considered an exploit....

Now now draximus, we must remember that there are an annoyingly vocal minority in EVE who dont seem to understand the whole concept of risk/reward. They are the sort that think that all empire space should be happy and joyfull where animals and people live in harmony while sipping ribenna and eating chocolate digestive bisquits. (and mining some good old fasioned ore aswell)
Where as the non vocal majority of people are happy with the risk of pirates and when they lose a ship they shrug it off as the game. We just have to respect the fact that there is this minority and deal with it.

True and if the patch log is to be belived it might just get a bit harder to do as well as the sentry guns will rotate targets and not just focus on the one tanking.

Sentry guns are a NPC-element. NPCs are stupid. Players, especially pirates are not stupid. Poeple should start to defend themselves instead of crying for pirate nerfes every day. And CCP should start to think about what they did wrong: pirating in 0.0 doesnt pay...the harder it was made to stop a ship in 0.0 the more likely it was that pirates get very creative to make money. DonŠt expect pirates to go mining!

Shield trasnfer/drone 'shield' may not be viable come next patch. While the new aggresion system is being put into play, sentry guns will now randomly change targets every 45 seconds.

Ok I shall explain it again for the mentally challenged:
The sentries work just fine, they are firing on us the whole time, unfortunatly they dont render unless you were there at the time they started to open fire...
So please dont whine about getting ganked by nasty bad men who hax/sploit/whatever caus we aint.
Basically Map is your friend...
PS: People often carry valuble Blueprints in shuttles, and ya were easily amused. Little things please little minds no? Sass Arcane Technologies |

i've actually begun to suspect the true purpose of sentries is to lull n00bs into a false sense of security...
and clearly, after you bought and paid for and installed this game, you should have come to these forums to ***** them with the rest of us and slogged thru 57,325 posts of useless drivel before even considering undocking, as it says in the manual, so it's all your fault
Sentries are a perfect example of a halfassed measure that should be removed. Either make something safe or don't but make up your minds one way or the other already...
Who has EVER been saved by a sentry gun? Anyone ever?? Since release, even once???
