Eve does NOT have a learning curve. Eve has a learning cliff. Think Dover- or Victorian Falls-ish. In all seriousness, what the depth and complexity of the game actually accomplishes is two-fold. For a complete waste of time (ie a video game) it can give one an amazingly visceral sense of accomplishment in mastering it. Secondly, the sheer complexity and difficulty weeds out the human chaff. Darwinian online community dynamics at work :)
