Well I would say that mankind is its own worst enemy. Therefore, I would rather the scientists be the ones that destroy mankind, rather then the idiots.
But then again, the scientists are often employed by the worlds militaries, which are run by governments of questionable intentions or idiots.
So, I guess it is jut a loose loose situation. Might as well have as much fun as possible

Agreed.
I'd rather get sucked into a black hole(HOW cool would that be?) than getting blown up by a nuke, which seems more likely than a black hole to absorb the eart

I wish the CERN scientists would publish the email addresses of these blithering cretins, so that they could be identified, rounded up and executed in the name of protecting the genetic pool of all mankind. Stupidity of this magnitude should be rewarded only with death.

I wouldnt be worried if the guy in the front had a crowbar for gordon to find, after the poo collided with the fan.
It seems this time all he gets is some crappy wrench. We're doomed, i tell ye.

LOL!
So what if they make a black hole!! They can finally study those too... Under a and extremely powerful microscope of course!
The energy is only 10 million amps of electricity and they act like its equal to a white dwarf star or something. If it made a black hole, that would be awesome because it would be microscopic! _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped. i honestly get more worried what the military would do with any deployable stuff from modern high energy physics. trust me the day they can roll {magnetic}bottles of Anti-Matter off an assembly line it wont be reacted in a power plant first but fired in a missile or used to power a high yield particle beam on a tank.

My greatest disappointment in life is humankind's failure to escape Earth. CERN is perhaps the last hope for us to understand the very basics of our universe and harness the knowledge for advancement. The potential reward is well worth the risk.

the last? are you we todd did? if you knew anything about life you'd understand that perception is the basic function of existence, please make an argument that proves in the life-cycle of mankind all humanity comes down to a test-tube?

Given that creating anti-matter then reacting it produces a net loss of useful energy, the only possible use of anti-matter is when you want to release a lot of energy much quicker than other means. So the only practical use I can see for anti-matter is for causing explosions.

Switzerland close to lake Geneva to be precise. Not in England.
And as for the black hole, IF and that is a really big IF it were to be stable enough to start doing what normal singularities do it would drop strait down towards the core of the planet and start munching on matter down there while growing continuously until it tore the planet to bits. (not sure if that would happen, I'm no theoretical physicist.)

For the curious ones...
Quote: Dear colleagues,
below you will find several links concerning the LHC first beam injection on 10 September. Note that the actual start-up time (button-pressing in the Globe) is planned for approximately 09h30.
- first beam info for media: http://lhc-first-beam.web.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam/Welcome.html
- satellite broadcast: http://lhc-first-beam.web.cern.ch/lhc-first-beam/satellite.html
- live webcast from http://webcast.cern.ch , starting at 8:30 am
- official info on all CERN events (in particular VIP Inauguration of 21 October) is on cern.ch/lhc2008

Do you seriously think I'll read an article about particle accelerators only to confirm that the device is truly in England after hearing only english doctors and whatnot comment on it?
I'm pretty sure I know more geography than you, unless you teach it.
