Can anyone explain the change of colour for a ship showing on the overview? Briefly I was mining in 0.5 sec space and I got jumped by pirates. I went for them and whilst I was killing them two other players jumped into the asteroid belt and joined in. I killed 3 pirates û not sure who got the other 2. Anyway, and this is the issue û no sooner were all the pirates down than the other two playersÆ ships indicators started flashing red (previously they had been grey û indicating neutral pilots). I thought they were going to attack me and I was ready to defend myself but nothing happened although the indicators continued to flash red. Were they threatening me in some way? Anyway, on checking for loot I found the cargo holds on all the pirates I had killed were empty. IÆve had this happen occasionally but not on 3 consecutive pirates! IÆm thinking the indicators flashed red æcos they were stealing û is this correct? If so could I have attacked them in 0.5 space without penalty? If I'm wrong can anyone tell me why the colour changed and what it means - should I worry about it?!?!

Yes, you can attack people flashing red. You start flashing when you steal from someone. So sounds pretty likely that they took your loot. Now when you do attack them you become valid target for them... and that's what they were waiting most likely in order to kill you.

Yup, that is the most probable explination. Originally by: Zennar If so could I have attacked them in 0.5 space without penalty?
The only penalty that you would face is that they could fight back, which in itself is likely to be fatal as they are obviously prepared for a fight.

Thanks to both of you for that - one other question springs to mind - at what point would an action be considered aggressive - when I target them or when I fire on them?

When you fire
Targetting someone does nothing

Agression happens when you activate any module that is detrimental to them.
Targetting is okay. Activating a remote armor repair module is okay.
Warp scramblers, target painters, tracking disruptors, ecm jammers, remote sensor dampeners (these are all e-war) in addition to guns and missiles will cause aggression.
I promise nothingÖ. --CCP Prism X |

^^^^This.
I was a little confused reading the OP. General convention is:
NPCs = "rats"
and
Players = "pirates"
It will help us help you if we can clearly distinguish players from NPCs. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.

OK - right - sorry for the confusion - blame it on my noob status! I get that NPC pirates are 'rats' but are all other 'players' pirates as Baka Lakadaka says? I just need to know for future reference...

Edited by: Letouk Mernel on 09/09/2008 02:24:38 No, not all other players are pirates, although if you go to systems that are rated at 0.4 or lower sec. status, it's likely that anyone you see will be aggressive and probably a pirate.
Basically, if you get attacked in high-sec, they're suicide-gankers. Or, in order to avoid Concord interference, they try to bait you into attacking them, by stealing loot or your minerals.
In low sec (0.4 and below), they're likely pirates. They'll probe you down and attack you, and Concord doesn't care.
In 0.0, out there in the wilderness that is controlled by the various alliances, they're likely patrols that belong to the alliance, and are defending the space. Most alliances have a shoot-on-sight policy towards anyone that's not part of the alliance. So, if you get attacked in 0.0, they could be alliance defenders, or roaming pirates, or just people looking for a fight.
EDIT: We call NPC's "rats". NPC's are always shown as a red +, not as []. Players are always [], of various colors.

These other players definitely stole your loot. Unless they were brand new players they did this in the hopes of you agressing them so they could attack you back and likely destroy you.
However, even if they are in a gang AND in the same Player Corp, only the one you attack can attack you back IF you only attack one at a time (this is assuming that you have not criminally flagged yourself to their Corporation by taking from their wrecks.).
this does not mean that if the other player is loaded for remote shield or armour repairing they can not assist their buddy that way, just that they would not be able to join in the fight against you without getting CONCORD to kill them (and only them).
IF you were foolish enough to target both and attack both, then both of them would be able to attack you back.

You should also know that the reason they bothered to shot the NPC rats, was also the chance that you might take the loot from those wrecks, wrecks not yours but theirs, and if you had, they would have been free to attack, because you would have flashed red to them as they did to you.

They're not directly detrimental to the target ship (although getting information on their fittings and informing your corpmates who then refit in station will be...) so they don't trigger aggression.
