I think a nice idea for a new feature would be to allow players to challenge each other to duels. If the person being challenged refuses, then thats the end of that and nothing special happens (mechanism to trigger duel challenge could be similar to fleet invite). If he accepts, then the two players are legally allowed to fight to the first death in hi-sec (not including podding of course) without concord intervention or standing loss etc. This is sort of like a mini-wardec, but between players instead of corporations, and only lasts until one person loses his ship.
Thoughts?

Because the current "steal from my can and thus make yourself vulnerable to not only me, but my whole corp" system is total BULLSHIT...
A duel option window would be great...

Edit - sorry, if you're in a bigger corp it won't work of course.

Would be nice to have, even though the only time I can see myself accepting the duel request is when I know I can win. I'd also have them allowed in low sec so you can dual there without penalties.
One issue to consider is people sending the duel challenge just to distract the target with the popup, or spamming requests hoping that someone accepts by mistake. So I'd suggest having the accept/deny dialogue requiring at least two clicks to different parts of the window to accept.

Maybe because stealing from someones can was never meant to be a "duel challenge". Its stealing from someone else.
And I still fail to see the idea behind this. If someone wants to pew pew, they know exactly where to go do it already. If you and your buddy like to duel so much you should be in same corp (you're so like minded about it already ...right?). All I can see this turning into is a noob trap. No one else will ever accept unless they think they can win.

I challenge you to a DUEL! Meet me in Jita at high-noon tomorrow!
Q: Why? A: Its a convenience feature... you might want to have a private fight but the two of you aren't in the same corp and don't want to leave your respective corps. At the same time, you might not trust each other enough to avoid the can-flipping corp backup thing.
Maybe one guy says in local that his fully-armed-and-operational Ibis can take on anybody, and someone wants to take his torp Raven for a spin against him. Who knows, the possibilities are endless.
Still, you guys have some good points regarding all the abuses of the feature... If the idea sucks, it will be relegated to the dustbin of history.

Edited by: Mulrec on 11/09/2008 13:47:55 I think it's good idea, although I'd say 1v1 is fairly limited in it's useability.
Adding an option for fleets to extend "duel" challenges to each other might be useful. To a certain extend that'll at least reduce the "I'm only accepting because I'm almost sure I can win" effect as there will be more variables in the mix.
Also, your buddy who you want to pew-pew with isn't necessarily in your corp, nor does he want to leave his corp to join yours as he is happy where he is (for any multitude of reasons), while the same probably goes for yourself.
If you don't like the idea, you can always opt not to use it. ;)

Use what tools are available presently. Can stealing from eachother, declare a mutual war or whatnot. But it has to correspond to what EvE is and so has to be open to abuse and trickery. Otherwise it's not really EvE. So if you make a dueling option that uses same rules as taking from each others can's, but saving the actual "jet some random useless stuff", i'm all for it.

Greetings,
Originally by: Jason Nymble I think a nice idea for a new feature would be to allow players to challenge each other to duels.
There would need to be a great deal of thought put into how the duel system would work.
Many other games have created duel systems, and each and everyone of them get's abused, generally with respect to newbies, for example, a common one in EQ was you find a newbie camping a particular spot, challenge them to a duel, kill them and take their spot. While EVE is meant to be a lot more cut throat than EQ, there still needs to be a graduated danger level and duels would generally violate that.
To make matters worse, EVE has no way to effectively judge comparative strengths / weaknesses of another player's character. Some people say that age is a good comparison because you get a rough idea of how much SP a person has, but it doesn't tell you what ships they can fly, what weapons they can use, the drones, industrial skills, etc.
For example, my alt has only 11M SP, but she can fly every T1 ship smaller than a BS, so you have no way of knowing what ship she would engage with, additionally, she was created as an industrialist, but she is heavily specialized in combat. You would literally have no way of knowing what you were going to face in a duel with her until she opened fire.

Welcome to Eve PvP
Isn't that suspense of not knowing what to expect the core of it? You try to surprise your opponent and he does the same.

This guy speaks the gospel.
People rarely honor 1v1's in high sec. They always have thier corp sitting one jump out or in local and then you have to set their corp to -10 and hope that it updates so you can see all of them in local before you accept the duel.
CONCORD should have a duel option in high sec.

low sec anyone?
Dude, this is not care-bear land, go to low sec, with your chosen target and duke it out there...
This idea sounds to much like WOW where such a feature is used by super powerful nerds that live in the basement to feel powerful when people rejects their duel....

If some stranger asks me to go to lowsec for some 1v1 pew-pew, I'd be very surprised if his side of the "versus" does not end up being "for very large values of 1"
Besides, having a duel option does not take away your privilege to fight in lowsec and 0.0, it merely adds another dimension for PvP. Adding a trustworthy option does not take anything away from PvP.

So long as this isn't a sneaky method of eliminating non-consensual PvP, I'm for it. The can-stealing thing is a workaround, not a proper mechanism. ------------------ Fix the forums! |

Commonly proposed idea
And duel option is not, strictly speaking, carebear at all.
The use of can flagging to create duels, an unintended side-effect of the can-flagging mechanic, directly evidences the desire of players to be able to duel. Low-sec is not a viable alternative, if you believe the opposite then we all know where your intentions most likely lie
If you are afraid of duel challenge spamming, it would trivial to include an "ignore all" option.
The fact remains that non-concord intervention dueling would create a great deal more pvp. 1 v 1 and fleet v fleet duel options would allow for more player generated content, in the forms of tournaments and ladder matches. I can even envision corps growing up around the premise of organizing and tracking various tournaments. EvE Gladiatorial Gaming Commission, Inc. for example.
Those of you opposed to dueling on the grounds that it is not "true to EvE", I can appreciate your opinion, wanting to keep EvE hardcore and dizzingly counter-intuitive. This game stands out for that reason among many.
Those opposed to dueling on the grounds "Go back to WoW", please, grow up.
