Recently I've been watching the series of "The Tudors" on BBC Two. However theres something really simple that puzzles me.
They refer to "court" as if it was some place of residence, im wondering if any of the historically inclined could explain to me what "court" was, as its context in this series clearly it is not a place where justice is served by judges.

Court is basically where the King and nobles hang out to discuss important things like whether or not to overthrow the church, whether it should be a crime to be poor without due care and attention, and how many sausages there should be at the next banquet. What you're thinking of is a court of law. The "of law" bit is important. __________________________

I haven't seen the series. Could it be Hampton Court they're referring to I wonder?

Hampton Court
Yeah that was where the Tudors used to hang out. It's about a mile or so from where I am right now.

Court exists wherever the King or Queen are at any given time. It is a group of nobels and diplomats, like Whitehall moving with the Prime Minster wherever he goes. It is considered an honour to be a member of court. And an insult to be told to leave it.
So joining court really means, come hang out in the inner circle.
