[Arty Vargur, Mission Running, Balanced Tank/DPS]

[Low-Slots] 3X Gyrostabilizer II 1X Damage Control II 1X Shadow Serpentis Power Diagnostic System
[Rig-Slots] 2X Capacitor Control Circuit II
[Drone Bay] 7X Hammerhead II
I'm working a Lvl 4 Caldari agent. This has worked well for me in almost every mission. I have found it to be a nice balance between tank and dps. In most cases running solo I can salvage all the wrecks as I go along and rarely resort to leaving wrecks for my salvage destroyer to come back for. Cargo space is great but not perfect so sometimes a jet can of loot gets BM's and picked up later after mission is turned in.
I'm particularly happy with the resists; the faction invulns mean I don't have to change out specific hardners to accommodate the rat damage types. Also the tank runs forever for me which is lovely indeed. The dps is sufficient to deal with Rachen Mysuna.
Only 3 drawbacks so far:
1. I've experimented with AC. In most missions I find the Arties more effective than AC. Some few missions with almost every rat moving quickly under or close to under the arties come up. In which case it is easy enough to switch temporarily to AC.
2. The occasional murderously overwhelming Pith ECM jamming which I can't find a solo solution to. In which case a few well chosen expletives and an alt or friend to help out does the trick.
3. A tight fit indeed for me hence the faction PDS. Thus fitting the T2 Arties is a PG forced standoff between tank and dps. I can't fit them without dropping the DCII for a PDUII which makes the resists a bit lower than I am happy with (but still better than two different specific hardners). |

This was my first setup when I was a little concerned about all the ISK down the tube if I made an error and got popped. Basically you rarely see any red shield HP status with this setup and when you do see it you have to be looking right at it because it doesn't hang around long. I was unhappy when it wouldn't pop Rachen Mysuna so I played around and got the more balanced setup you see posted above. |

I should be so pleased if anyone can improve on either setup while leaving them both Arty setups and not AC. T2 arty is really worth it ... If you can't/don't want to, get Republic Fleet ones at least.
How to PVP: 1. buy ISK with GTCs, 2. fit cloak, learn aggro mechanics, 3. buy second account for metagaming

Good suggestions. I am trying to keep a tank that runs forever. I can't fit the suggested and do so.

It has a huge cargohold, so use cap boosters and boost when in need. Use mission specific hardeners.
If you like close range and extreme tanking, go like this

Go for t2 guns once you have the skills.

I can't honestly support buying a vargur (or it seems keeping it in your case), or training up t2 artillery. In it's current state.
Caldari BS 5, then torps 5. You're golden. Once you see a devblog recognizing the issues with projectiles, you've got about a 2 month window to train t2 guns again.

it all depends, i'm training my alt for a vargur, not because it's the most effective, but because it offers a different playstyle, also it picks off stuff far away faster than the golem i'm training my main for could :P (as using a paladin is less effective than a vargur vs angels), also, it stands the biggest chance of being buffed :P
if you only have 1 account though or want most isk/hour, follow astro's advice and get a torp golem. -sig-

It's not a bad ship - on some missions it can get dangerously close to the golem's effectiveness. It's just that on some missions, it's simply god-awful and outpreformed by a t1 BS.

Why?
Let's say mission lasts for 30 minutes. And you get 1200 dps for 1 minute of that 30 minutes. Do you really need a 1200 dps tank running all that 30 minutes?
One XL Shield Booster, one amp, 4 slots for hardeners (for example guristas mission 2x kin and 2x the). Using that shield booster isn't that hard. Just keep eye on your shield level and enable it always when it looks bad. Don't leave it running.
With permarunning tank you just run missions slower by cutting your own DPS...
In L4s there is only handfull of BS's doing the DPS and that's it.

Edited by: Spaztick on 13/09/2008 18:42:11 You should be fighting Angels IMO as a Minmatar, especially in an 800 million isk ship, simply because the salvage is the best there is and you want the greatest return on your money. That, and with kinetic/explosive damage they do it's much easier to shield tank them. EFT'ing it I get a 700 DPS tank permanently running a large shield booster. With my current skills (I cannot fly a marauder) i get 500 DPS tank, which is still more than enough to do level 4s.
That being said, I do recommend flying a Vargur with ACs, if need be you can put in a tracking computer and tracking enhancers. Your tank will suffer but you can track much better. But seriously, more people should have some type of spacer in their sigs to show it's not part of the post.

I can't take credit for this setup... but it's one of the better approaches I've seen to fitting for pve with arty. I probably changed it a bit from whatever the original owner was using... but I forget.
[Vargur, PVE - Arty] Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Gyrostabilizer II Damage Control II Reactor Control Unit II
Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Pithi B-Type Small Shield Booster Invulnerability Field II Invulnerability Field II Shield Boost Amplifier II Shield Boost Amplifier II
1200mm Artillery Cannon II, Fusion L 1200mm Artillery Cannon II, Fusion L 1200mm Artillery Cannon II, Fusion L 1200mm Artillery Cannon II, Fusion L Salvager I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I
Core Defence Operational Solidifier I [empty rig slot]
Valkyrie II x5 Warrior II x5
The 2 small shield boosters are dirt cheap compared to most of the pimped large / x-large boosters and get comparable performance, with an EFT reinforced defence efficiency rating of a little over 660. You have a good 20 minutes of tanking if you don't switch on the tractor beams and salvager - otherwise it's around 10-15 minutes depending on usage. And you can upgrade to pithi a-type if so desired (for about an additional 100 defence efficiency in EFT), and keep your faction invulns and boost amps for even more gain.
I couldn't decide what to fit in that empty rig slot. CCC makes it cap stable without the salvage gear running - but 10-20 minutes is plenty of time already. If you don't mind a pg implant you can get a projectile rig in there (with projectile rigging IV you need a 3% with AWU V, 5% with AWU IV) - or alternatively you could drop the dc II for a pds to get the extra grid for the rig if you're comfortable with the tank.
All in all, it's quite a solid performer considering the majority of the gear is only t2. Makes it a bit more accessible a ship.
Interesting times await... |

Because I like to be able to turn it on and forget it it while I'm busy popping rats and salvaging. I also go AFK now and then for various reasons and it is handy to not have to ever worry about the ship going boom while I'm not paying attention. |
