I am currently flying a T2 fit Torp Golem for lvl4Ęs having pretty well maxed Torp and shield skills, I need a change.
I fancy a change of weapon and ship to fit Tachys, my first choice was going to be cross race training to get the Paladin, but my skills atm are in shields.
seeing as my shield skills are already there, would the Nightmare be an obvious choice over and above the Paladin ? Or would the Paladin be the better choice once the armour skills are there?
Thanks

I was asking myself the same thing. You will hear a lot of different opinions, but basically Nightmare has greater tracking and Paladin has greater ability to loot. Both are decent ships, so the best thing is to fly them both and decide which is more comfortable for you - you won't regret it. Both ships will require you to train pretty much the same skills, except for armor tanking maybe, but it won't take long, comparing to gunnery & amarr battleship skills. - Sig: StackNerfing * GangLinks |

this is true ... my plan atm is to get Amarr BS to 4, then get the guns so I get to fly the NM while I train armour skills than back to Amarr BS to 5.
At that point I suppose I'd have given the NM a fair trial... now if it only had 40km tractors as well

Either way, a friend of mine just got a Nightmare. Does a SHIT TON of damage, and has four free slots in the top, of course. The catch is simply that it's harder to fit than the Pal, is slower and unwieldier (and this guy usually flies a torp Golem...) and doesn't manage a tank that's as good. What speaks in its favor is really the sensor strength and the tracking bonuses.
It really depends on what you're planning to do with the ship, I guess. But, personally, I'd prefer the Pal. It's by far a more well-rounded and nifty solution. And besides, whoever flies either of these ships without support in PvP and expects to last is a bit of a moron.

It is a thing made of oblong tubes, crap and misplacement. It looks like someone took my coffee machine downstairs and massacred it, then welded the stuff back together with a couple of flashlights on it. The Phantasm looks cool and nasty with those spikes and its shape. The Nightmare just looks like a piece of crap stuck together.
Conversely, the Paladin has the updated Apoc hull, which already makes it better than most BSes (except for the engines), and in addition it has the Carthum color scheme. Not quite as sleek as if it would have the Khanid pattern, but far more menacing against a dark backdrop.

I agree. I very much dislike teh look of the paladin, and its T1 equv.
The Abadon however looks nice :)
Besides, the nightmare make suse of both Caldari and Amarr skills, so its a nice thing :)
Thinking about sellig you Golem then? ;)

You can manage a perma tank with 3 heat sinks still. Just gotta put a bit more iskies into it, but if you are buying a Nightmare, you fit it with what it deserves :)

You know last time i checked my nightmare only had 2 open highs after guns and 4k+ grid left after fitting tachs plus a huge chunk of spare cpu with a plain tii tank, its the paladin that ends up with fight fittings. Please make the effort to climb into one of the thing before posting crap.
Also as a footnote, with pulses (even easier fitting) it's easily cap stable with tii gear. ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

Badgers. I forgot. Wow. How's that for talking out my ass?
Either way, pulses are always nicer, yes. Cap stable though? Long-term tank? Passive or what? You're going to have top engineer skills by the time you get either ship anyway, sure. And sure, shield tanks are better overall. But you'll be missing out on active bonuses and you'll be drawing much more fire in the Nightmare. And that's not even taking into account that the question was for PvE...

Bear in mind that you're probably not going to notice a huge improvement in a Nightmare over a T2-fit Golem if you've pretty much maxed your torp skills out. The only area it will really shine is if you end up missioning against naturally-EM/therm weak targets.
If mission running is your thing being brutally honest I think the Golem is a better all-round ship, especially if you're at the point where you disengage your brain running L4s anyway...

Nightmare can be turned to alot of damage with a cap stable tank, if you use a few faction items. Top engi cap skills is more or less a requirement when combining lasers and shield tank. Currently I got an almost 400 omni dps tank on Nightmare using 4 tanking items...more than enough for most missons. Navy Tachs and MF crystals make it a real beast.
Aside from that, then Nightmare is sexier. Despite the Carthum painting on Paladin, it's still bloody dull with the Apoc hull.
