As a mission runner, and also a PvPer (not only with this account so don't run a battleclinic on this character and accuse me of never PvPing) I am really upset about how stupid NPCs behave. I know that it is a means to an end of killing stuff and making ISK, but it would close the gap of PvE vs PvP fits if we did some stuff to make NPCs do some really simple things to modify thier behavior.
1) Let's make NPCs run away when they get into structure. You have to scram them to keep them there. If they run away they won't come back but you are denied the bounty and wreck for salvage and loot. This will help deny Caldari as the best PvE ships as you can't super tank your ships.
2) I know pod capsuleer (PCs) ships are suppost to be superior to non pod capsuleer (NPCs) but it is kinda rediculous to have me able to tank a fleet of 30 of them with 1/4 of them being BSes as well. I have read all the fiction for EVE and know the reason we have superior ships but I think it needs to be toned down. Make the rats stronger and have less of them. Wasn't that a goal of the Need for Speed initiative to help reduce server lag? Weren't they supposed to do that just like what they did with CONCORD?
3) Make them vary some strategy a bit. Use REAL ECM not a stupid NPC version that is chance based and doesn't matter if you fit an ECCM or not. I know they added the ability of some to Nos and Nuet but they can do some more. I know they can only add so much variability to the missions but a few differant ways they act would be nice.
I know this is a big change to how missions are and people in EVE hate change and oppose it whenever they can. But the PvE in this game needs some love. We already have the best PvP of any MMO we should work on the rest.

Edited by: Zaknussem on 17/09/2008 18:48:43 1: Good idea. Why don't you code it and submit it to CCP to show them how easy it is...
2: CCP is already contemplating this.
3: I agree that this needs to be fixed. Why CCP hasn't done so is IMO strongly related to the first topic. |

This is a terrible idea. A huge proportion of NPC ships like to fight at 40-50KM. Not every opponent is Angels or Mercs. The idea of a Raven slowboating over to 10-20 Centum Overlords a mission, each 44KM from the Raven, is truly horrifying. Mission running would go from 10M/hour (average, low skills) to 2M/hour. May as well just AFK mine Veldspar.

On the subject of point 2) it is kinda ridiculous that a single ship could tank the incoming damage you see in missions. It doesn't really help that it looks like everything thrown at you is directly hitting your hull, it would be nice if CCP would change the engine so missiles/lasers/projectiles hitting your shield, armour and hull respectively all had different (and very visible) graphical effects.

Yes, CCP has publicly stated they intend to do this.
Instead, they gave us "Buzz Kill".
Some other ideas to narrow the gap between missions and PvP:
1. You know all those large collidable structures in the missions? Can you say "docking games"?
2. NPC jamming. Enough of this chance-based crap. Guristas missions should consist of a Falcon and a Scorpion perma-jamming you from 150km.
3. Aggression countdown from attacking NPCs before you can use acceleration gates.
4. Concordokken for rats that attack players in hisec.
5. Concordokken for players that attack rats in hisec.
6. Random chance of a supercapital hotdrop.
7. Sentry aggro after shooting rats.
8. LP store scams--read the offers carefully!

Bring some friends? Maybe try a more close-range setup?
Also, competent Raven missioning is WAY more than 10m/hour.

Gotta admit it, I LOL'd.
At best we can expect "less ships, more damage" types of scenarios. But complicated NPC behavior is probably not good for the performance of the game.
edit: forum ate my post
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started.

Negative. You'll end having to push out rats in some of the nasty missions, where a close range setup will seriously hurt you. Not everyone got friends sticking around all the time, and it's not very safe to drag in random people.
