I've heard about tanks. Seen some tanks, shot volleys at tanks, tried to break tanks, but never actually managed to make a ship tank properly. I tried to armour tank my Brutix - it ate its cap. I tried to shield tank my Megathron, it got blown up by pirates. (Don't shoot me down about that, I learnt the hard way)
The Drake, I'd heard was a good ship to make a shield tank with (I like shield tanks, first line of defence and all that!), so I went and got one and got some advice on the forums how to fit it etc. It cost about 45 million in all, which I don't think is a hell of a lot really. Thats about 4 weekdays missioning in Empire for me, maybe less. Whacked a lot of T2 shield gear on it, it has six mids, woohoo !
Anyway, I'm a noob FW blobber, I've been mainly scouting just to get used to it and this is my first real DPS/combat ship. I wanna get on the killboards, and not as a loss.
Got in a blob in low sec, sized up a smaller but highly technical enemy fleet (Goddamn Falcons!) and boom we are in combat.
The FCs Huginn got wasted, I must have missed the command to bug out and suddenly I'm a target for the enemy five ship fleet. Eeek ! Panic started to set in, I'm near enough the gate to jump, but I'm getting a message I've never seen before: You cannot jump due to your recent acts of aggression. Whaaaaaat ?!!?
The bad guys are shooting me, theres weapon fire all over my ship, its like a fireworks display. I've been here before, it normally ends in me being in a pod and then in a station. Just as the sinking feeling begins, I look at my shields, hang on, they're still at 90%. Quickly compare to how I would react in a mission and my brain spits out the answer - Don't panic. De target everything, wait, wait, shield still acceptably intact. JUMP !!
Whee, I'm out and ..... 85% shields. I just tanked five ships dps !
Now I'm not saying they were Death Stars or anything, but I'm pretty sure the way that Huginn went down, they weren't T1 frigs either. And I'm very happy, not being able to tank has been really p1ssing me off since I started playing.
Moral of the story: Go ask questions in Ships and Modules, those guys love to have a 'Fit Off' with each other and they really know what they are talking about, they have been at each others throats for years.
Other moral of the story: Faction Warfare PvP rocks! If you think Eve is getting a little dull and you haven't tried it, DO IT NOW !!!

I love you.
Wait 'til you really start learning and getting good, get your overview sorted and learn to recognize ship names and associate the name with the threat (that is, what you can expect it to do to you and what you need to do to it)... you'll love pvp even more

Moral of this story:
If you want to enjoy PVP. Fly a ship that doesn't blow up easily.
Makes sense.
Till you end up being the dude that has to shoot at a Drake...
Fun that is.
Can't neut it, Can't blow it up, you can tank its damage but it just sits there. Being annoying.

Don't you just love ending up in a 1v1-situation versus a passive drake in a ship that cant push 900dps? xD

This. Hell I don't even have great missile skills and I can push over 500 dps out of a HAM drake with just over 100k ehp.
But even if they're bad DPS, heavily tanked mission drakes, it's annoying to fight against them. If I'm in a HAC or something, 3-4 drakes is not something I am thrilled about, because I know that even if I (or my smallish fleet of similar ships) can take them out at all, it's going to be a long time, during which they will collectively deal out 600+ dps to one of us (which sucks) and will be calling reinforcements (which sucks). __________________________________

The OP asked for help fitting a Drake for PVP in S&M. He was given the usual HAM Drake advice, together with certain niche ewar and sensor support fits. He then stated that he'd learnt a lot, but decided anyway to bring this badly-fit mission Drake into PVP:
Quote: Well, having distilled the best fitting help from your expert knowledge, I took my Drake (named Drake-ular) into combat last night, no action though. Went out again this morning and got abandoned by the fleet at a gate. There were five other ships, I really didn't have time to see what they were but they had already put the FC out of action in his Huggin.
This is the fit:
7 Limos Heavy Launchers, 1 Drone Link Augmentor 3 T2 Invulnerabilty, 3 T2 Large Shield Ext 3 T2 Power Diag, 1 Damage Control.
Yeah. I think I understand why the FC abandoned him.

I dunno - everyone else took off, he sat there and kept the opposing ships busy, and lived to tell about. I've taken down my share of uber-tanked drakes and while they are mostly harmless offensively they do make fantastic tanks against any force stupid enough to primary them.
@ the OP: Put ship types on your overview. Just do it. ---

Exactly Mr erm Wife, or should that be Mrs Wife? The FC got blasted, I think thats why there was no clear instruction to get out. I was busy dealing with Falcon boy who was screwing with my lock and didn't notice my mates had all bailed. As for ship types, I take your point. Wilco.
Edit: I am still suffering (or enjoying) adrenalin whiteout during these engagements, going from carebear to PvPist is erm exciting to say the least. Thats why the details are hard to focus on in the heat of battle.

With passive hardeners only the tank potential drops dramatically so it's dead either way. --------------------------- sok alt - main got banzored |

Meh… pick your poison: ~10% less tank or a vulnerability to cap warfare that will reduce your tank by 50%…
