While I'm well aware of the Cheetah being far superior for exploration, I'm looking at about 30 days of training to be able to use it if I want the full package including the CovOps-cloak.
So I'm considering making my first steps in exploration with a Probe. I have read the Exploration guide, but it still left a major question unanswered. How dangerous are the exploration sites for an uncloaked Probe? Can I just scan the site, go there, make a bookmark and go get a bigger ship or are there sites where you get jumped on immediately and the frail Probe gets blasted to shreds?
Of course, I'll make my first test runs in High-Sec so I'm really only concerned with NPCs at the moment. To sum it up: Do I need a cloak for exploration or can I do without? |

Edited by: Saietor Blackgreen on 19/09/2008 10:20:59 It is unlikely you will be able to do ANYTHING in ANY exploration site with Probe or Cheetah. These are just scanners, very good ones. Find it, bookmark it, return in cruiser/BC/BS.
And no, most of the sites you are not insta-aggroed or uncloaked. I've lost a Cheetah once in anomaly, because I warped into some structures and didnt pay attention. But as anomalies are not deadspace, you can warp to 100 to them, and you dont need a cheetah to find those anyway.
As for deadspace sites, I dont know any of them that uncloak or somehow trap you on warp-in. You are usually not even aggroed right away, actually. You will always get away in frigate.

You should be ok in high sec without a cloak. You tend to find things at range anyway so you don't need to have the best reflexes to escape if it looks dangerous.
In low sec though it's pretty fair to assume that if there's anyone else in the system they're trying to take all your stuff; Every second you're not cloaked is a second they're probing you out and ships are found much quicker than exploration sites. If you find some nice empty low sec you could be fine without the cloak. You don't really need the full cov ops cloak though, putting one point into cloaking and just using a prototype cloak will let you not die while you're stuck in space waiting for your probes to hit something.
