Hi everyone,
I am a new player to EvE (1 months old) currently ratting Sanshas/True Sanshas/Vizans (Got him today ) with Raven. I'm happy with that now, but later I want to do PvP and maybe, get a carrier/dreadnought. Taking this into account, I decided to switch race, but I am stuck between Amarr and Gallente.
Amarrs have ugly ships, but people say and I have rad they have the best capital ships (carrier-Archon-is the best too?) Is it true? One more thing for Amarrs that they deal EM/Thermal damage, and as you surely know, against Sanshas you need EM/Thermal.
Gallente have real nice ships (Hyperion is my love), and as I started Caldari, I'm a bit more progressed in hybrid turrets (Small hybrid turrets on level 5-but nothing in lasers for Amarr), but it don't really counts. There is one thing I don't understand: Why they say Thanatos sucks? Isn't that damage bonus to fighters nice?
Which would you recommend me?
Thanks for the answers: Gnome Executor

Edited by: Xori Ruscuv on 20/09/2008 21:35:20 Caldari has an amazing fleet ship (Rokh), the best recon (falcon), and strong gang pvp ships. Caldari also has an excellent carrier (in the opinion of some, it's as good as the Archon).
Why are you wanting to switch?

Very wrong. And just wait a while and they'll be even more wtfpwn.
The only damn disadvantage to the Caldari ship lineup in general is slowness and a lack of maneuverability. And that can be circumvented and/or doesn't hold true in all cases. Not to mention that if the speed nerf goes through in full effect, the significance of that whole thing will even decrease. And then you will still have long range, FoF missiles, passive tanks, nber-Recon, HAM SPAM, best ECM and ECCM... Need I go on?

if I were you I would stick to Caldari and go towards a Falcon (get used to ECM in a BB), they are friggin'overpowered atm...
if you really want to crosstrain atm the best race to skill for is Amarr BUT you will have basically no skill overlapping (except the basic supports skills and maybe some missile skills for khanid ships), it's like skilling for a new character altogheter
skilling both will make you a rounded character (shield, armor, missiles, turrets, engineering, mechaninc), but you really want to have at least a specialization first, and be good at a particular role...

Who's everyone? Let's see: I can agree that all below BC T1 is not that good compared to the other races (the Caracal can have some use in missile spamming fleets though) BC - Drake, BS EHP (effective hitpoints) and 600 DSP (with HAMS); can also fit T2 heavies for some nice range and damage output BS - Torp Raven, Blasterokh (better optimal than Mega blaster), sniper rokh, ECM Scorp (only ewar BS in game)
T2 ships: inty - crow, have to say anything more? recon - falcon, mmm, anything more? HACs - not the best but very competent though HIC - Onyx is nice one CS - Nighthawk has an awesome tank, so it will be good for pve, could be a bit 'broken' on pvp but all CS need some help as far as I know from what I've read anything else... well very balanced i think
caps: I think no one can beat a remote shield repairing Chimera gang, probably the strongest tanking carrier
Phoenix - a bit broken due to citadel torpedos being destroyed by smartbombs, anyway when you reach this maybe is allready fixed (or no, who knows)
MS & Titan doesn't matter much at this point. ---

Caldari sucks at solo pew pew, due to tanking with shields and being slow moving ships... they are probably the best race when it comes to gangs along with Amarr.
And you know, solo pvp is almost dead. ---

Torpedoes. And cruises. They even make Target Painters useful.
Either way, your sentiments are echoed across most of the community. Thing is though that as long as the Falcon remains 'the decider', and if webs are nerfed and so on, you are much better off focusing firstly on increasing either your ability to EWAR or to counter it, then making sure you have enough firepower.
This is coming from a disgruntled Recon pilot who is very, very irritated at passive shield tanks and FoF missiles ****ing up every chance at soloing most, if not all, Caldari missile boats. Unless you can introduce overwhelming firepower, they are pretty much untouchable. And everyone likes being untouchable, especially to stealth ships.

well, then the race kinda depend on the kind of pvp you want to do amarr and gallente are both great, amarr with its cool (actually, hot) lasers and thick plates, and gallente with in-yo-face blasters (will suffer from speed nerf) and dronez (will probably benefit from speed nerf)
gallente is maybe more suited to solo/low-sec, close-range work and requires a direct and ballsy approach to the fight (and that's why I like them so much, no matter their weaknesses), amarr has great staying power and the best turrets at the moment (great in gangs),
Amarr really shines from bc (harbinger) and above (probably best bs, tied with gallente, and capitals), and has some good t2 cruiser (zealot, sacri, curse of doom) t1 amarr cruiser are kinda meh (with some exceptions like arbi and nano-omen (!) )
Gallente has awesome t1 cruisers (thorax and vexor) and t2 (ishtar), probably best ceptors, decent bc (gang-brutix and tanky-myrmi) and some good bs (domi and mega) gall recons are kinda meh atm with the damp nerf but may see a new life with speed patch (scramblerrz)

Give it half a year and shield/missile skills. Once you hit the T2 stuff, you can call me up, and then we can run some tests. Not that I haven't had a few attempts at a few corp guys...

For the sort of game style you're suggesting (going to caps and 0.0 warfare) I would suggest Amarr over Gallente, but you could stay with Caladari without problem if you wish. Eventhough I think 1 month old is to early (unless you've played with an other char) to really know if you want to go that path.
But any race has nice ships, the game is quite balanced except Minmatar which need a serious buff, more if the nano-nerf patch goes thru. ---

Edited by: Vabjekf on 20/09/2008 22:53:26 Play the ships you like best. Nerfs come in cycles. Ive always flown amarr, and occasionally caldari (passive shield tanking is really awesome in concept to me, so i had to get a drake)
Caldari ships are also quite neat. You get to go around feeling high-tech. The newer caldari ships also dont look so ugly.
Ive always thought gallente ships were ugly, and their stations also, are ugly.
minmatar. I wish all their ships were as cool as the rifter=p But every cruiser and battleship looks stupid. The BCs look ok however.
If lasers and armor do not sound awesome to you, don't train amarr. I dont want a bunch of people who do not love the race itself training up now because they are fotm and getting our beautiful ships dirty with their sleazy gallente residue.
Looks are important. If you aren't looking good while doing it, you are doing it wrong.

Caldari are very specialised in what they do. They do a certain thing much better than other races, but in turn suffer in all other departments.
Whereas other races can tank, tackle, zoomzoom and gank, Caldari generally can only do 2 of those at a time with any sort of effectiveness. About the only exception to this is the Drake.

Edited by: Xori Ruscuv on 20/09/2008 23:54:52 Caldari FAR from suck in PVP. Train them, you won't be sorry.
For soloing, for a while you'll be thrilled with the Crow. After a while you can manage with a drake, and you can always branch out later.
Gallente really only have Drones going for them right now. Caldari and Amarr have everything going for them right now.
Operative phrase being: "right now". Things change. Over my time of playing, Minnie have been on top, Gal have been top, and now Caldari and Amarr are on top - and it's not the first time, for that matter. Mark my words (and the words of others for that matter) Cal/Amarr will get nerfed, and something else will reign supreme.
After few years of playing you'll have tons of stuff trained and you'll be nerf-proof. For now, Caldari give you everything you could possibly want.
(And so why didn't I train Caldari, you ask? I did. I have two accounts. The second one has Caldari, and I enjoy it more than this account, which is Amarr/Gallente.)

Thanks for the answers :D Then I will stick to Caldari, and maybe train some jamming skills later and try out Scorpion and Falcon. One last question: Why Thanatos suck with it's nice fighter damage bonus? Because Carriers not made to do damage but to support?

weakest tank out of all carriers.
it only has 6 low slots and bonus goes to fighters.
archon for example has 7 low slots and a 5% resist boni per level.

You should train Amarr for pvp, you will come to recognize this later after you have pumped a lot more points into Caldari. Work to fly the Falcon, and switch out to Amarr and go up that line.
The Nid (minmatar carrier) has the weakest tank, The Chimera has the strongest. . .but its easy to kill a solo carrier, so carriers are used most effectivly in groups. Of the four carriers out there, only one tanks shields and fits remote shield reppers. . .the Chimera. Archons, Thanatos, Niddhoggers all armor tank. They also all fit remote armor reppers dispite the ability for Thannys and Niddys to fit remote shield because of the fitting difference. This means, while the Chimera has the strongest 'local' tank, the Archon has 3 of the four races to back it up. Amarr capitals are the most powerful because of the prepensity to armor tank in pvp.
Overall, outside of the Falcon/Scorp - there is no reason to train caldari unless you take pride in it. . .which is some strange RP stuff and not the best advice. ----

Sucks at solo pew pew? Of what sort? In low-sec/etc, solo BCs are workable, so the Drake/Ferox is just fine there. Also, they have one of the best interceptors for 'lol-solokills'.
And 'slow moving ships' - did you miss out on Caldari agility buffs? They might not have high top speeds, but they've got agility the same as Minmatar or better.

I'm lucky in that the playstyle I like is comparitively easy to train. I mainly fly ceptors and so have took the time to train all four races and their t2 secondry skills before moving onto cruisers. I have now 2 t2 cruiser skills (as well as training the sweet skill that take advantage of this like logistics, recon, heavy assault, interdictor and heavy interdictor) and fully intend on training all four races cruiser 5 before I bother training battleship 3 in any race.
That said this is my playstyle and i like it. Its not for everyone. Some may say they want capitals although i'd rather shoot myself and so specializing is key, its all upto you.
