I figure that this is the best place to reach most of the combat pilots out there. I had my first ever Null sec fleet pvp experience yesterday and I found it fun and overwhelming at the same time.
One thing I've been wondering is that when two big fleets collide and there's rail ammo, missiles, projectile ammo, warp bubbles, smartbombs, war disruptor probes (anal probes) flying all over the place to the beginner it just seems like one big mess. How do you guys process all that information being thrown at you all at once?
To think, I started my Eve experience as a die hard carebear who didn't want to have anything to do with pvp whatsoever, now I have a second account with a combat toon that normally pesters my corp to get lowsec gangs going so much that I'm sure they want to pod me themselves :)
I can honestly say that now I understand why some of you are completely addicted to pvp, because now I am too ^_^

Hax and Metagaming!
For myself, just playing the game longer, being a forum lurker/troll and surrounding myself with people who know the game helped organize the mess a lot.

I also know why some corps require around 10mil skill points to join, when some of the fleet we were fighting saw me and thought "wewt! n00bie!!", I lasted about 10 seconds (that was ship + pod) :))

Learn to manage the overview.
Truly large fleet battles really don't have to much input processing, its actually medium scale ones which require the most concentration and cordination. A 0.0 "fleet" battle consists of literally a 100 plus guys on each side. Its generally not considered "fleet" untill its taht large :). The only things really relevant in 0.0 fleet are, am I scrambled, am I primary, and who is the primary, not much to manage.

Turn off all effects, set overwiev to show only your targets, do what you FC is ordering.

It's like learning to drive a car, at first it seems overwhelming but when you get used to it automatic processing kicks in.

Definitely getting with a good FC that can keep his cool most of the time is the best possible way to learn and keep cool yourself. Hats off to Xaeon and SuperTwinkey69 for being clear headed when shit hit the fan.

I kind of thought so, it's great fun tho, I'm looking forward to some more low/null sec trips when I'm a little better prepared.

Just surround yourself with people more competent than you. Some of it is bound to rub off soon enough.

Proper utilization of overview settings/tabs really DOES help a lot.
Also, when stuff gets really messy, nobody will know what happened to you afterwards, anyway. In that scenario, you just have to SOUND competent and people will buy it

Drink.
Drink a lot.

And then drink some more. Check if everythign makes sense. If not, keep drinking. Once it starts making sense, it is over anyway, so time to log off and get some sleep.
