I hate to be the one to point it out, but in a silent auction you do get to see other people's bids. They are written down as a list and anyone who bids must bid a minimum over the last bid.
The term "silent" refers to the fact that it is not a live auction, in every other way it is the same. Usually there is a time when the auction is set to close that the last bid written is the one that take it.
This usually leads to a number of people standing over the list and trumping each other's bids at the last minute until the attendant takes it away from them!
The process that CCP is using is refered to as a "blind auction" and is generally used for the sale or commercial real estate or securities. --

We don't have a broomcloset.
Yes we do, there is that room up on the fourth floor, next to the bathrooms.
That room does not contain any brooms, buckets, mops, detergent, sponges, rags, windex, marigold gloves or other cleaning implements. I think it got turned into a network switch room, judging by the amount of blinking lights, multicoloured cables and hamster food.
And these are the people giving the TOUR?!?!?!

Wrong again, the room you are referring to is in the same corridor though

I don't like the design. I would rather see something such as $1 buys you a single ticket. You can buy as many tickets as you like. One ticket number is drawn and that ticket holder gets the trip.
This allows a lot more people to donate. I can't afford to blow over $1000 USD however I could afford $10-20 or so. I figure 500 people paying $15 is worth more than one person paying $3000 |

Ah so that's where Oveurs been hiding...
The blinking lights no doubt a part of a complex internal distillery system.

Will the tour be including a quick swim in the new 2000 gallon fish tank?
If it does I promise not to bring my spear gun, in an attempt to catch lunch. --

Last year's auction winner is a Goon too. How's that for a twist on typical Goon behavior? ;)

heh Wish I had the kind of money to even go to fanfest at this point. never mind a $1000 opening bid for a tour but hey I'm not poor and have enough to get by and then some extra, so I'm happy.
but it is for a good cause and yay for ccp being a corporate sponsor of child's play
would love to be the winning bidder, maybe someday

As I recall, you used the opportunity to choke Zulupark. We have pictures. That is what made it typical Goon behavior. (I still <3 you, Av.)
For those of you attending Fanfest on a budget that prevents you from being able to try for the office tour, remember that there is a wide variety of less expensive items that you can bid on. Nav and Applebabe have done a tremendous job "sack dragging" (as we say in the South) to find some really good stuff.

after zulu's last few blogs I don't think that is limited to goon behavior
and I'm on a budget that prevents me from even going to fanfest, suppose I should run for csm and get it paid for

I think it's a very noble cause, but also demonstrates CCP's general attention to detail (note, it's not that great). A normal silent auction would show what people have bid so that others may compete to their liking. This is just a blind auction where we don't know how well we're doing.
It works great for Child's Play, but isn't really fair for those wanting to cough up their money for the chance and to help out charity. If the first bid is $1M, then everyone who bids under it, most people, are just wasting their time. This can lead to unnecessary frustration. If someone bids a big sum, everyone who wants to compete should know this, so they can know that they're outbid and not have to bother trying. Everybody wins: the charity gets a nice, substantial, donation, and the losers don't waste their time "competing" and don't have to agonize while they wait to see if they've won.
To me, this is just CCP doing the least possible work. A little bit of effort could have inspired people to compete and enjoy the competition, knowing that they're trying to benefit those in need.
