Since the warp engine is capable of warping straight ahead on autopilot, it would be nice to add the option of warping straight ahead in the direction you're facing. You could make this so you can enter the number of km to warp (minimum 150km of course).
This would be a lot of help when exploring the galaxy. If you want to make it less abusable, randomly change the direction you're facing by 0-5 degrees. Then you're still 0-15 km off target after a 150km jump even if your aim was perfect, but you are at least closer to your target.

This defies the game lore. When the ship warps, the nav computer locks onto a large celestial object (i.e. a planet or station). It would also have issues with gameplay which I'm too tired to explain

warp can go anywhere, game mechanics dictate it so as you can warp to empty space.
i posted something similar where i wanted a "warp at ship heading button" with set incriments.
i want more freedom to go where i wish in a system

Rubbish. It is trivially easy to construct bookmarks to points that are not near large celestial objects, or evn on a path between large celestial objects.

Both arguments in this thread are rubbish, you don't need a large celestrial object and you can't just warp to a random spot, you have to have been there first. The entire warp equation is organized around precalculation, and I would think the fact all of the energy needed for a warp is burnt the instant you click "warp to" would be more than enough to keep people from suggesting the possiblity of "free-warp."

Free warps are already in. Press Alt-F4 and get your gang members tell you what your ship does.
Anyway, the cap usage is entirely the point. Face in a direction, and feed X units of cap into the warp drive, where X defines how far youre going to go.
Cap usage on warps is proportional to the distance covered, not on any other factors (for example the change in potential energy - the cap usage does not change if youre warping from close to the sun outwards, or from a distant point inwards.)

Actually it's the number of seconds you can stay in warp (as far as I can tell).

i think this is a good idea, but the distance should be set in increments of say 100km, so you cant warp and land dead on top of someone.
