If you're worried about your failure as an Amarrian mother, hairstyles are the least of your worries.

You bring up some fears I have. Having recently became a... well, mother is the best term, myself, I often wonder if I am the best person to provide for her.
*a small laugh can be heard*
However, if my worst worries about her growing up are her choice of hair styles... I will count my guiding stars I was so lucky. I know the nightmares my own childhood brought my parents, I hope against the odds that little Jall'n won't do such things to my sanity.
If it really does bother you, I would consider speaking with her about it. No subject should be taboo between a mother and her child.

Edited by: Faraelle Brightman on 26/09/2008 20:35:40 I don't have a daughter, but I've been one all my life. *smirks*.
I don't know how conservitive you tend to be but really, one's choice of hairstyle is a rather benign one. If you think hers outregeous you might not have seen many trendy young Gallente hangouts lately. Last I checked the new trend was fiber optic and electroluminescent accessories...actualy I recently got a hair clip with fiber optic decoration, it's subttle enough to go with formal wear even, but there's enough flashy, flashing, neon, even animated stuff out there.
Ahem. Just because she disagrees with you doesn't mean you "fail" at anything; it's probably healthier, in general principle, that you don't agree on everything. Decision making is part of growing up. You may not always like it but you have to be realistic about when your not liking it maters.
Edit: Oh, so there's a guy involved. Consider me out of my league then.
I don't know how old she is; does she have capsuleer training or did she take something like the Interbus? Space travel can be rough on the inexperienced but I would hope she has enough common sense to stick to safer routes.

Oh thank goodness, you're just drunk. I was beginning to worry that universal translation software had begun charging by the letter.
If it's any consolation, my parents refused to talk to my brother Byre for a whole month after he started wearing his boots cross-laced, rather than straight-laced as required by corporate regulations. He grew out of it, eventually.

Daughters. I sometimes wish they could be locked into a barrel and let out only when they are adults. Lesharu informed me quite calmly the other day that she wished to attend a synth-rock concert held on the station in Aunia with some friends.
When I inquired as to whom she would be going with, she informed me that one of them was a fellow I knew of, and that seemed to be unduly interested in her, in my opinion. Having spoken to this young man (and informed him that if he touched Lesharu in any way that I ever found out about and wouldnt like, I would kill him myself) I had thought he had gotten the clue, so to speak. Alas for the hormones of youth.
Shian has told me that I am overreacting, but I disagree. Since beginning to "hang out" with this young man and his coterie of friends, Lesharu's grades have dropped somewhat (not enough for me to "take notice of" yet) and she has begun to display what I can only define as an attitude of belligerence toward me when I ask/tell her to do things like her homework, or when I inform her of public outings that we are to take as a family. Shian says "its a phase" and will pass. But I tell you, its already annoying as all hell.
I want the best for her, and I will allow some leeway for her to make her own mistakes and therefore learn from them. But I am her father and she must understand that there is only so much I will allow. I just havent figured out how to get her to understand that yet.
Lady Dougans, I dont think you have failed as a mother. But it is good for me to know that I am not the only one that has issues with my child, however small those issues may be.
May God grant you Wisdom, (especially when its about your children...can you hear me God?!?!) Pilots.
Oh, before I forget, no she didnt get to go, and she most certainly didnt get to be felt up by that young Achuran fool.

Ah, Veron...I'd like to offer some advice from the more youthfull side of the spectrum but the topic is a bit of a thorny one, since where it concearns, ah, intimate relationships, your culture and mine are rather at odds. That's not to say thet Gallente parrents don't have the same reaction you do to such a situation, but there is rather less long term stigma attached to them when hormones take over from good sense.
Your wife is right in that most teens go through this sort of thing. In the more benign aspect of it, balancing work and play well, I find, only came to me with practice (though my idea of "play" usualy consisted of too many books or computer games). Instead of being simply insistant that she meet her responsabilities, perhaps find ways for her to demonstrate that she will meet them and reward it with increased trust and autonomy. At the very least there may be something gained by trying to work with her instead of against her. Often increased preasure to do as one's told leads to all the greater desire to rebel.
As for the boy...well, the possability of something you don't like happening is there, and there is the chance that you won't be able to do anything to prevent it. I guess it sounds scary but teens are resourcefull when it comes to sneeking things around their parents. Now an Amarrian might not approve of this, so maybe it had best come from her mother...but I would be sure she understands about things like birth control and disease control and all the other possible concequences of intercourse, if there's even a chance that things could be that serious. Whatever the moral implications might be to you and your peers, the practical and physical ones might be more devistating if she doesn't. Like my father said when he started to let me drink alchohol at special family occasions, he'd rather, if I was going to try it, that I did where he knew I'd be safe rather then get out of controll and possibly come to harm elsewhere.
(All that said, I wasn't personaly very interested in boys as a teen...I only khow how many other people I knew were, usualy without their parents knowing. I was a bit older before I got into anything particaruly serious, if short-lived...but I prefer to keep such things private.)

A very Amarrian attitude, if I may say so. And, actually, the major difference in attitudes towards such things between our people.
Ah, children.
I can only say that I am glad I am no longer that specific age, nor do I currently have any of that age. I certainly am glad I did not have myself for a son.
Remind them that their choices now will affect their entire lives. Though I am not certain that fact will register with them, it did not with me when I was that age. ________________________________ This is not a signature. |

*bitterness is barely held back as Inara starts speaking*
Alcohol will affect most people to the point of slurring, and some people more than others.
*Inara takes a breath and continues in calmer tones*
I dread the day the young Amarrian girl I tuck into bed every night learns of boys, or rather they learn of her. I may join you Pilot Dougans at the bottom of a bottle on that day.
Speaking in terms of optimism, have faith that the things you instilled in her growing up will stay with her for the rest of her life. Speaking as a new mother... *raises a glass before taking a long draw and closing the channel*

It's slightly an Intaki one too if you want to classify it....at least, the outright exibitionisim you sometimes see with the Gallente and affiliated races didn't start with us. It's a facinating subject of study, the sexual cultures of the various ethnic groups, but in the end it's my personal taste and personality (which veers torward the reserved side Intaki are steriotypicly known for).

I can't recall there being a Scriptural prohibition against wearing hair like that.
And, as another pilot mentioned, there is most likely a deeper issue than simple hairstyle.

Convince my daughter of that, would you? She tells me nothing. And she wonders why I abet her being spied upon!
I've grown rather tired of starting conversations with her like 'So, I have heard you're now a terrorist. When and how and more importantly why did this happen? And why didn't you WARN me before it came out on IGS?'
I love her very much, and worry about her more. I wish she'd come home so we could get all of this sorted out.
But no, now she feels that she needs to stay away from home 'for our own good'. She's saying nonsense like 'you are a big girl now, Maman, and do not need me anymore'. How ridiculous! Of course I'll always need her, and she'll always need me.
Why else would I've bothered with this near-immortality nonsense?

Like other writers, I do not have a daughter. I am one, though, and boy did I give trouble to my a clan when they were raising me up.
My advice: Keep on telling her your opinions. And then let her do what she chooses. If you raised her well, she will return to you after seeing the world for herself.

Not within my hearing range, fortunately. Then again, I don't frequent the rowdier militia hangouts on stations.
Hmm, that said, it occurs to me that if I see her appear on militia channels I could at least see that she's doing all right. You say she's 17 though? I'm not sure if there's a rule about joining younger than the age of majority (18 here)...I would *think* there is, but someone might assume she's older just because she's a capsuleer and not check.

The youngest in pod I've heard of was 15 and only preparing for his Voluval (he was flying with his father, thankfully); I know of several 17-year-olds in service of various organizations.
